You'd be surprised at the general populace because some actually did believe that.

lawlessx

There are people who really think PC can't do HD ??? Jesus

Their were alot of things that were said here in around 2005-2006 that shouldn't have been said.

There was a why can't PC do HD resolutions thread only one, maybe two years ago :P The guy was completely serious.

Nice troll son. I think you'll find it's the consoles that can't do HD.

really? as far as I know consoles have been doing HD since 2005.

Is 720p HD though? That's a resolution PC games had ages ago.

6048x1200 is where it's at. It's basically 7.8 the amount of pixels 720p has. :P

pfffffft Crysis can run at like 21000x16000 :P

I remember there being a picture of someone playing in the sandbox and he took a picture that was seriously that large, maybe even larger.

I haven't played Far Cry/Instincts, but the general opinion back then was pretty much how we view Crysis 2 now. Console memory accomdations had to be made, and it changed the experience on the game map.

Far Cry Instincts is evidence of what happens to open environment games when consoles become involved. But then again, we don't really need it for that. We have Crysis 2 as a more recent example of this.

Can't say I care. Crysis already felt poorly-paced and clunky back in 2007, greatly surpassed by CoD 4, can't imagine how outdate it will feel 4 years later (and in comparison to MW3).

I think an open world foliage would be quite possible, I think Far Cry 2 on consoles more than showed that could be done decently, though I think what will be scaled down the most will be the physics. It won't look as good as PC potential (goes without saying), but I think they could optimize it to be quite good on consoles nonetheless. People are right to have their doubts that it won't meet the potential of the PC version (duh) but I think people are going overboard on the potential of the Xbox 360, sure it will be scaled down but I don't think they'd bother unless they can do a decent job at it. If this rumor is true then this will be interesting to see what kind of optimization they can squeeze out of the console this late in its life.

Quite frankly I expect it will have more to do with "If we blur the screen, it helps hide imperfections like jaggies and cheap texture filtering. They are looking at a up-scaled 720p image across the room anyway, they won't notice a little more blur". Then they stick that same game on PC... with us looking that those exaggerated blur effects right in our face at 1080p. If they are going for a more film/CGI look, I want to know what film has a can machine glowing so brightly you think it's about to explode.

AnnoyedDragon

There's been decades of research into simulating lens-based phenomena and it's not because people just want to cover up a lack of texture filtering. I'm not sure why you think everyone is trying to pull the wool over your eyes here.

I was speaking in terms of the way us gamers think, not the way a developer thinks. You have to remember that this is a gaming forum, so I'm going to be talking in terms that us gamers understand.

You're the one talking about game development implementation details...you bought it all up and have been saying things as if you have knowledge about how they work. You can think whatever you want about how graphics work, but if you came here and said that magic elves make pixels in a tree factory then it doesn't make you any less wrong just because it's how you think as a gamer.

Textures paint everything on screen, so a poor quality texture is like a poor foundation that everything else is built on top of. A fuzzy looking texture, like say the signs in Crysis 2, isn't going to look less fuzzy by applying more shader effects to it. You have to replace the texture outright to improve its appearance. And if you can use shaders to improve its appearance like you say, surely that is going to be disproportionately performance intensive than just using a better texture?

Albedo textures just change the base color of a surface. They're good for a sign, because a sign is completely flat and has a uniform response to lighting. The only difference in real life would be the colors of the paint used (assuming each paint has the same glossiness), and so a simple way to represent that variation in surface color is with an albedo texture. You can also represent text and other decals with a distance field and do it with less memory, or you could do it with vertices. What would be best would depend on the hardware, the contents of the sign, and the artist workflow + time budget. Either way...most things in a game world are not signs. Consequently they need much much more than a high-res albedo map to make them look realistic in different environments and lighting conditions.

When you have 512-1GB of GDDR5 memory, I don't see the point in leaving that resource underutilized; and placing the workload on other areas like shaders.
Why not just use a better texture, negating the need for extra effects to make the texture look less bland?

Nobody is going to make the argument for "underutilizing" whatever memory you have available. My point is that albedo textures alone are not even close to being enough to give you a realistic approximation of what a surface looks like. And if you don't understand why shaders get hit so hard in modern games, then you probably haven't paid attention to the past 5-10 years of GPU hardware development. Shader ALU has been growing at a tremendously faster rate than memory or bandwidth.

When I see the incredible facial texture work in Crysis 1 in 2007, then a poor quality texture with a overuse of normal mapping to make up for the lack of fine detail, being used in 2011 with Crysis 2 when consoles got involved. It begs me to question whether the low memory environment on consoles pushed them to seek none texture heavy alternatives.

Normal maps are textures, so if you're pointing that out as an example of "non-texture heavy alternatives" then you're not making any sense. Artists tend to prefer normal maps over albedo maps because they give you actual surface variation that the lighting responds to. I'm sure their texture budget was lower for a game targeting hardware with less memory, but having normal maps are not an example of that.

I'm not quite sure where you got pre-baking from. My argument has been keeping the facial detail in a high resolution texture > a low resolution texture with mapping to add fine detail.

Well that's the thing...if your proposed approach is to only have a high-resolution albedo map then you're implicitly supporting "pre-baking" because that's the only way to get the proper lighting response since you don't have the requisite details stored in geometry or in a normal map.

Too much depth adding effects like normal mapping infamously leads to unrealistically plastic looking characters and environments, something that Unreal Engine 3 got a lot of criticism for back in the day

Normal mapping has nothing to do with something looking "plastic looking". The "plasticly" look is a result of simplified lighting models used in most games. Those Crysis faces you keep talking about had positively huge normal maps on them. The reason they looked good, is because they used high-quality skin shaders with sub-surface scattering.

Well i guess in theory they could do it... 30m draw distance. Super lower textures on things beyond that. 90% of the physics removed (cant destroy trees, crates, buildings), Most of the other animations are removed (grass / trees), Lower res, lower graphics. And if they still remake the engine... Oh and make the AI even dumber. But after all of that... Is it Crysis?

*insert "I tried putting Crysis PC DVD into 360" joke here*

If they did bring it over, I wonder if they would use CE2, or convert it to CE3?

Here's Crysis on consoles...

They benchmarked the 360 at 2 million polys/frame in this scene in their console research. You could even shoot down trees. I bet they could include destructable lego shacks in all their glory if they really tried.

Ewwwwww. It's a mix of medium and it's missing some foilage. Not to mention the insanely bad draw distance. It'd have to be CE3 since CE2 isn't coded for consoles.

To be honest though, it's always been possible. What we've been saying is that in it's current state, it'd be impossible to put Crysis on consoles.

There was never a question of whether they could scale back the graphics for a console, they could scale it back enough to work on an n64 if they wanted, the main problem was fiting the level's information into the console's memory. To get crysis onto a console they would have to switch to a cell streaming solution like in Crysis 2, but in Crysis cell streaming would be detrimental to the gameplay as many parts rely on having massive levels.

I love the hyperbole from the hermits on this. "it could run on a n64/ds". Whateva, whateva.

A lot assuming/hoping they couldn't get it to work. It's been 4yrs. since Crysis came out. I'm sure Crytek could figure something out if they wanted to.

Magic, that's what Crytek will do:o

Listen dude, you can port every game in whatever platform you want by removing features. It's not rocket science.

Anyway, why are console gamers so hyped about it landing *possibly* on consoles? I thought the game sucked, was a generic shooter and a COD clone at that?;)

Uh yes you can. You just remove whatever the hardware can't handle.

That's hardly a good example. The 360 was running the island scene from Crysis at 720p, medium settings, 2 million polys/frame @ 30fps. That's hardly comparable to running the same scene on the N64/DS. They could never handle the game in any form. Stop exaggerating.

Ah, the old dual-wield trick in Goldeneye. Fond memories of that game. A true masterpiece.

You guys are so silly. Don't let the denial overtake you. It's just a rumor, after all.

I'm confused as to what we are denial from?
