I'm guessing we won't have a BC PSP2. I doubt it will be that powerful since having that much power will reduce the battery time to just minutes. Sony should just go the route of cartridges like Nintendo and leave the DD to old PSP games you'll want to download.

lbjkurono23

I hope so too.

It makes sense for them to use them. You'll get faster load time, PSP has a terrible problem with load times, and cartridges take less battery power I hear.

Lets hope not. Otherwise no-one will make games for it.

Give us a system slightly more powerful than the 3DS. I want a multiplat handheld gen.

jasonharris48

I think they're hoping that if the PSP2 is noticeably more powerful than the 3DS it would pick up both 3DS games and PSP2 exclusives.

That's kind of dumb if you think about it. The first PSP was more powerful than the DS and yet the DS had the bigger library of games. Sony should focus more on how are they going to fight piracy with the new PSP.

Yeah, it didn't work well for the PSP. But the DS was such a different system from the PSP, you know, in terms of touch controls and the two-screen design.

But so far, looking at 3DS games, it doesn't look like devs are making much use of the second screen. They're relying principally on the top screen, the analog stick + buttons. So there's no reason why a game like Resident Evil Revelations couldn't make the jump over to the PSP2.

Yes. Horsepower always help. Particularly when it comes to handhelds... Battery life, convenience, price and all that stuff is completely irrelevant. I WANT MAH PORTABLE DEVICE THAT CAN DO TEH HD, NEVER MIND THE FACT THAT HD DOES VIRTUALLY NOTHING FOR TINY SCREEN DISPLAYS.

1GB of RAM? Uh... why? Sometimes I wonder if Sony just likes selling stuff at a loss.

Ringx55

Ram is incredibly cheap now-a-days they can afford it easily.

Well, the second-half of my statement, I was thinking about the claim that it rivals the Xbox 360 in power. Not just the RAM. I'm still not sure why this system needs 1GB of RAM though, unless Sony is planning to add some impressive multitasking capabilities.

I believe it was mostly just piracy that kept DS games from being ported to the PSP. The games I've mostly played for the DS hardly ever used the touch screen and if it did it wasn't anything that couldn't be mapped to the D-Pad.

Have you tried out an iPhone 4? It definitely does something. Also, the rumor claims the PSP2's screen will be bigger than 5".

They did a pretty good job with ps3, so hopefully it holds the same for the psp2.

Sounds like the PSP Go on steroids. I'll pass. I don't want a portable game device that's downloading only. I like to be able to sell my games. It needs to be able to run my current UMD's and do downloads. Once I beat the game, I like to sell them or trade them in and not just delete them from my PSP2 memory. How much memory is this thing going to have? 250GB? If the games are going to rival that of the PS3, then we know each game will be 1-10GB easily. Is the system going to be as powerful as the PS3/360, but still produce the regular PSP style games? More info is needed, that's for sure. Without the UMD, it's up in the air for me.

*************************************************************************************

[QUOTE="lbjkurono23"][QUOTE="musicalmac"]That means it rivals the PS3, too. :PXanderZane

No, the ps3 is two times more powerful than the 360... :s

No it isn't. The PC is 4x's more powerful then the PS3. That's a more realistic phrase.

Actually the best single GPU PCs are around 12x or more the power of a console.

Heck even my old PC from 2007 is 3x+ the power of a console.

Sony is really stupid. I don't think most people are looking for console experiences that are portable. They are looking for quick games on the go. This is gonna be another failure like PSP. Sony should just quit because they aren't learning from their mistakes.

If that's the case, based off of most of the games I've seen, the 3DS should probably fail too.

The 10 minutes this thing would be powered up for will be glorious. MFDOOM1983
My thoughts exactly. :P The prospect of a handheld being on par with the 360 sounds wonderfull but battery life, cost and heating seem like some big hurdles. I'm gonna say this is false rumor. I expect the PSP2 to be a beast but this seems unrealistic. But then again, you never know since the PSP was launched 4 years after the PS2 and rivaled it in power.

The iPod Touch, and iOS in general, is the king of casual, quick games. The DS was also strong in this area. But while there have been a few games announced for the casual audience on 3DS, they're not the games that people seem excited for.

I just hope it isn't the phone that had "leaked" pictures. I wanted a dedicated gaming device because i probably won't be getting the 3ds based on the games that i have seen announced for it.

360 power? I doubt that. I personally think it'll be between the PS2 and PS3 like how the PSP was between the PS1 and PS2 in terms of graphics.

Graphics was the least thing I was concerned about with the current PSP.

Until developers actually treat handheld games with the attention to detail they give to console platforms, PSP2 is going to continue to provide nothing but watered down ports.

So does this mean that there won't be any physical media? If so I've got a big problem with this.

To actually develop games that takes advantage of that hardware you would have to price the games at $30-40 to be profitable. This is clashing pretty hard with the potential of no retail versions of the games. There is no proof that people, especially kids and casuals who are the major consumers of handheld games, would be willing to spend that much money on a digital game. The Success of IPhone games for $5-15 is not comparable. Neither is Steam.

If the PSP2 would end up with only $30-40 digital games the system is doomed to fail.

While I honestly don't have too much of a problem with it being completely DD. It would be nice if there were some type of physical copies. Maybe you'll buy voucher w/boxes in the stores? Who knows, I hope they go with something other than full DD.

not exactly. I believe UMD consumes more power than a cartidge-based system would. so cartridge-memory stick based media prolongs battery life more than a UMD can. (oh, and load times are worse from a disc anyways)

and a UMD involves moving parts, which means there's more chances of things breaking. whether it's from age, manufacturing faults.

major downfall is the manufacture of the actual games. which is what makes UMD more ideal. if end-user pricing is unaffected, then it can be a moot point.

the 360 really is not that powerful .

Well the PSP had almost PS2 graphics on 2005 5 years after the PS2 launched,so a portable with close to 360 graphics 5 years after its launch is not that hard to believe, considering that the GPU's now are several generations ahead of the one on the xbox 360 and PS3. But i think it has to do more with power consumption and heat than actual raw power, the slim 360 doesn't even have and internal PSU,and i don't think is for design reasons, the GPU and CPU generate allot of heat, true there are a ton of GPU's probably more powerful that are more heat efficient than the Xenos but i think is not quite up there yet.
