So basically what some people are saying is that a platform with a supposed 263 million userbase (according to pcga) can barely beat out a combined userbase of around 75 million (ps3 and 360)? Hooray!?

Arach666

Don´t forget that games on the consoles are insanely more expensive, wich inflates the numbers for the consoles at lot.

If they were at the same price, the numbers would be overwhelming.

In your opinion maybe, I would think if the they were the same price, pc gamers would buy far less games and it would still even out. Do you seriously think that pc gamers on average would spend 60 USD a game?

I was saying if the console games were at the same price as the PC games(aka cheaper). Not the other way around.

I still think it would stay the same IMO, cheaper games = more sales. But hey, to each his own.

[QUOTE="XenogearsMaster"]A big chunk of that are MMORPGs... and this number is worldwide while the NPD report for consoles are only for NA.ZIMdoom

It also includes microtransactions and online advertising. the PC alliance says they include these numbers because places like NPD don't track it. But if NPD doesn't track it, then those revenue aren't included in the console number either. Therefore, what are the console profits if we add in microtransactions (ie. Home, horse armour, alternate costumes, themes, etc), online advertising (how is this even counted as "software sales"), and subscription fees (ie. XBL fees, FF11 and soon FF13).

In other words, in my opinion, the PC Alliance is once again stacking their deck to create the illusion that game sales are skyrocketing while console sales are dropping. However, once again, their data doesn't prove the point they claim they are trying to make. They are intentionally stacking the deck to inflate their numbers, then comparing it to consoles which they know won't have that information added in.

Exactly, I didn't quite get why they would include online advertising... The inclusion seems like damage control.

Nope, what you saw there are worldwide sales including micro-transactions and online advertising which is not tracked by the NPD group who only tracked sales in NA, not worldwide for the consoles.

[QUOTE="General_X"][QUOTE="GhoX"]http://www.gamespot.com/news/6253286.htm I shall link that for you. Basically the article finds that only 20% of PC games are sold in boxed retails, the reminder 80% are digital purchases from Steam or D2D, which are not included in NPD figures.

I'll believe it, personally my last 5 PC game purchases have all been through Steam or D2D, mostly due to convenience since I don't have a car up here at college right now.

same here I have not bought a single non steam game in around 18 months. pc retail is dead. gs will go mad if consoles are opened up to full day one dd and 80% of people buy games through dd.

I would rather it not die. I won't be surprised if boxed copies are only available to buy online though, in which I'd still buy them.

If I can make a guess, I would say that micro-transactions and online advertising is 20%, 30 to 35% for MMORPGs (WoW, RuneScape, etc...), retail sales are in fact 20% and that leaves DD at 25% to 30%.

So basically, the real software sales(Retail and DD) count for50 to 55% which is $6.5 billion or more which is divided by 3 (NA, Europe, Asia) $2.2 billion dollar for each territory, which is a small percentage compared to consoles.

I play games to enjoy, not to impress friends. :| Anyways, I have all my game icons lined up neatly on my desktop, so it's pretty much the same, except it's virtual, can't get scratched and doesn't clutter up my room. :P

Exactly. I can't wait till digital distribution has a significant presence on consoles.

So your wild guess can disprove statistics? Damn, I wish I had God powers like you did. Can you grow a money tree too?

And I've always wondered why console fanboys have so much contempt towards MMO's. It's not "teh hardcorez" enough for you guys? Or are you just too cool to play WOW?

The fact that you're still bashing PC gaming because it isn't 5390457349857 times more profitable than console gaming is damage control as well.

[QUOTE="Arach666"][QUOTE="ThatGuyFromB4"]Are you serious? Yeah, guy, 2 minutes out of my life, whatever will I do? PC gaming is IRRELEVANT. No one cares. Get it thru your heads.

The dying and irrelevant platform makes more game sales than the ps3 and 360 combined. So what does that make consoles if they have been outsold by a dead platform ???

Keep the damage control going it makes me smile.

Uhh... no and because actually your opinion on the majority of the pc games is flawed. Because most PC gamers downloaded the games from the internet especially that there are so many free games you can download and they are alot of decent games. That's the majority, not selling PC games.

Yeah, I wonder why PC gamers are the elitist ones here. All I hear is console elitism. Feels like hypocrisy. No wait, it IS hypocrisy!

I don't care for sales. As long as they are high enough to ensure that devs keep producing PC games, then that is fine for me.

It makes me smile as well.

To pretty much sum up the thread so far, pc gamers are all

and the blind consolites are all

Because of this, they feel the need to damage control. Why do they get so hurt over this?

Maybe if fanboys spent more time playing games, then they wouldn't feel the need to bring down other platforms. Nah, that's a crazy idea. It's much better to pretend to be superior to others.

[QUOTE="mirgamer"][QUOTE="XenogearsMaster"]

[QUOTE="devious742"] you make it seem like 80% of sales are from micro-transactions and online advertising...when in fact this article is mostly about the decline of retail and the shift towards steam and other online DD services...

LOL @ thePC gamers boasting.

I guess this guy represents the Consolites Damage Control Department...lol. Wild guesses shooting left right centre but that's pretty typical of consolites :D

My calculations are correct and the the percentage for retail is accurate. The other percentages are just guesses. As for MMORPGs, let's look at WoW who makes $180,000,000 x 12 = 2.1 billion which equals to 18%, not adding many other MMO services which may amount ot 30%... DD would mean that it is between 25 - 35%...

OK... I have an argument. You clearly don't have an argument... Who wins here?
