but this gen hasn't been that scary :(
Manhunt 2 came out in 07 i think.
If you want a real Scary game, get Siren Blood Curse. Other than that this gen is pretty low on good survival horror.JynxzorSilent Hill: Homecoming next month. Wooo.

Manhunt 2's not scary in any way.
A part of what makes scary games scary is not knowing what to expect and difficult enemies (Achieved by weapon restrictions e.g durability/lack of ammo and/or overwhelmingly powerful enemies that'll force you to do anything to survivee.g Regenerators in Resident Evil 4) to force the player into a constant state of alertness, paranoia, and fear.
Manhunt 2, rather than having enemies get the jump on you, you use anything that makes noise, the shadows, and weapons (Most of which have plenty of ammo or are indestructible) to get the jump on them and take them out instantly. Even if you mess up an attempt, you're easily able to outrun all the enemies to get out of their sight or fight them head-on. Unless you're attacked by more than two enemies in melee combat, you'll usually win without much damage.

You don't necessarily have to force fear into someone to be extremely scary. I'm more of a fan of the Silent Hill Psychological approach, where they put you in a hecka foggy place with weird sounds and ambiance. I like how nothing ever jumps out at you in Silent Hill. Silent Hill isn't scary when the monsters there, its that hour long crawl through myst filled corridors wondering when that monster WILL come that is scary.

that, and the sound design is fantastic. your mind tends to conjure dreadful things when you hear something not quite right in the background.

Ok, yeah, i supose i was thinking more of gory.
Fatal Frame IV, whenever it comes out.
Even though the ghosts themselves never really scare me once I see them, it's when I'm walking through cramped hallways knowing that there has to be a ghost somewhere ahead of me that induces fear. And even though some of them jump out at you, the scariest ones just appear. Usually off camera. I remember almost s***ing myself when I was playing the first one late at night and after about ten minutes of complete silence suddenly heard,"I'm blind...I'm blind..." behind me.

Yeah, I'm a huge fan of Silent Hill, and because I took the time to play through all the games and understand the intricate backstory and the link between all the titles I'm more equipped to judge these games. Call it an educated opinion.Silent Hill games have always been underrated. I wouldn't be surprised if Homecoming gets a 7.5 or lower.
