Non-gaming apps to blame but it's definitely out this autumn, says SCEE boss
Sony was being too ambitious with the non-gaming applications of Home and delayed the project to focus on gaming, SCEE president David Reeves has told CVG.

In a brief interview at the recent PlayStation Day event in London, Reeves admitted that Sony wants to make sure the gaming parts of the service, like trophies and Home-to-game launching, are ready before it goes public.

"It is definitely coming out in autumn," assured Reeves. "Whether that's October or November, I don't precisely know, but it is an open beta."

"We've realised that maybe we were too ambitious with the non-gaming applications within Home, getting sponsors and stuff like that," he went on to confess.

"In that sense we were deserting gamers. So, we're concentrating on the gaming by launching games in Home, and attracting people who are into gaming in first - instead of the Nike people, or Adidas people who are into fashion and not necessarily into gaming."

Reeves also spoke of the diminishing importance of platform exclusives from third parties, as first-party games become more prominent. "We did Buzz, we're doing LittleBigPlanet, Killzone, and there are obviously others that we're developing. We're becoming less dependent on third parties."

But, he added, Sony will seize exclusivity opportunities for games that attract new customers.

"It's got to be something that catches our eye and we think will bring new consumers into the industry. We can't keep recycling consumers from one iteration of PlayStation or Wii to another. We've got to gather up new people as we go through the years," he said.

Screw home. Just let them fix what's lacking and what's broken. Then I'll be satisfied.

Should be interesting the response. All I saw for a while were threads claiming how home would pawn XBL. Wonder what the spin will be here?

Yes, Sony can admit when they got something completely wrong. Shocking huh?

I'd rather they fix it for gamers and release it than put out something half-baked and prone to problems.

Nice they finally realised the majority of PS3 buyers are gamers. It's a start. Now we've just gotta wait a few years before PS3 starts pushing out more games.

The funny part is that Sony admits they weren't even trying to compete with XBL. They were trying to do all that other random shhizz... and are just now focusing on providing what XBL has been for years.

something is too ambitious when YOU bite off more than YOU can chew. perhaps Sony's computer scientists and engineers didn't have the talent necessary to do HOME like they thought they could in the timetables they were hoping for. Perhaps its simply how the PS3 OS was designed that makes it so difficult.

After all, we're still waiting for in-game music customization and in-game access to the XMB. Almost 2 years after launch, we're begging for features the 360 had since 2005.

So maybe in the case of Sony, they tried to do more than their people could handle. Not that SOMEONE out there couldn't do it...but that they could not.

I think the expectation from Sony and Cow Nation was that PSN + HOME would be greater than Xbox Live.

that I can agree with 100%.

It never struck me as something people would want to use a lot. I think it'd be used for a couple of weeks, then i'd start dying down because it's an extra step.

i think more and more devs and publishers are getting interested with Home causing it to delay especially with devs trying to put their games' achievements interact with Home.

first i thought Home was going to be more of a Sim community just for the people and their achievements and til now..

just look at it now, even Peter Moore wants his Madden at Home, so as Dan Hauser with GTA4..

>

to me this is like Kojima overestimated the PS3 in contrast with Kaz Hirai underestimating how many devs are wanting to put their games at Home

This has nothing to do with developers and publishers. It has EVERYTHING to do with Sony's continuous failure to deliver what they promise. Achievements have NEVER caused 360 titles or dashboard updates to be delayed.

Kojima ONLY overestimated the potential of the PS3 because he was building his vision of MGS4 off of the system figures and capabilities that Sony said the PS3 could offer.

really.., let's see, before Warhawk, R&C, Uncharted, UT3, and games that came out after Tokyo Game Show 2007, Home was ready for its released because Phil Harrison and Jack Tretton stated it at E3 2007 showing it off to the audience..

..but, when the games were released, Incognito, Insomniac, Naughty Dog, and even Epic got interested in putting their achievements at Home hend Kaz Hirai at TGS announced "Home delayed".

FIRST, Home was just a community basically just for people to interact and now look how many devs and publishers are interested on putting their game achievements at Home.., and we're not talking about just Home, we're talking about in-game videos and in-game XMBs as additional for this release

to sum it up, they felt like they went to deep with non gaming features and have decided to delay it so they can concentrate on what the gamers would want.

I can't say I'm 100% surprised by this revelation, ultimately. This has become pretty standard fair when dealing with Sony. What I find ironic is how much people harp on Peter Molynuex for Fable, when many of those people own a PS3.

Home is not that easy to develop. It's not a game but will include mini games (i think). We're talking about millions of PS3 owners who will go in Home that will interact at the same time. To me it seems that they want to release this in full throttle without PS3 owners having complaints (freezes, lags, glitches, etc..) once it comes out..

so you're saying that by developers and publishers simply being interested in HOME caused the delay?

Sony's the reason for the delay and nice try trying to convience ANYONE that the fault falls on devs shoulders.

btw....achievements(trophy room) were a part of HOME's initial concept when PH showed it live
