my heart goes out to those professionals who's lives have been ripped asunder by sony's terrible management with the ps3.

perhaps they'll find work on one of the other consoles.

i'd really hate to see such talent gone to waste.

it may be just me, but such an action so closely tied to the ps3 can't spell good things.

tis a sad day indeed.

News breaking earlier this month that Sony Europe was laying off 160 staff has now been followed by details on the SCEE development studios affected by the cuts.

Reported on developer blog Inner Bits, Sony Liverpool (Wipeout, Formula One), Sony Cambridge (24: The Game, Primal, GhostHunter, MediEvil) and Sony London (The Getaway, Home, EyeToy, SingStar) are the studios hit.

Sony Liverpool has seen over 50 redundancies, Cambridge around 20 and London again over 50. The blog says that an additional 30 staff working mainly in marketing, sales and PR have gone.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe declined to comment on the staff cuts when contacted.

I know Sony will say it has nothing to do about PS3 or money but people do not get laid off when things are going good.

People get layed off in companies all the time for various reasons.  Right now Sony has a whole 6 years of data from last gen. to look at what branches make money and what branches bring little to the company.  You think nobody loses jobs with MS or Nintendo, of course they do.  Thats buisness you limit expenses BEFORE it becomes a problem, not after.

these are development studio layoffs, not sony's own workforce.  Those cuts are coming as well.

the line in bold really says a lot about how poorly the ps3 strategy really is.  The expense of that thing is enormous and it's obviously has become  a problem.

Yes, quite possibly. ME 2, I mean, Vista, is total garbage. It's so bad, some would consider it a ripoff and a scam.

Of course not, because these things are only news worthy and only impact the future of Sony, not the 360, the 360 is perfect.

You didn't read 3 paragraphs down were it mentioned prior Xbox cuts.  You also have no idea if these jobs were redundant, able to be done by others, or extra weight.  You also didn't tell me when you received your MBA or what type of educational and professonal merit you posess to have such a thorough understanding of corporate financial matters.

No whats funny is that you fight so hard to try and bash the PS3 in every thread you post yet every single time you get proven wrong.  Its also funny how if a buisness has some layoffs that somehow means the death for the console, when it is all a part of buisness, SCEE is a buisness as well and do the same things buisness do, streamline and get rid of redundant jobs to save money. Thats that world, just because you dont understand it doesnt mean you can jump to such conclusions based off one branch losing only 160 people.

Microsoft also recently laid off 62 Windows test engineers.  Are we now to believe that Windows is a failing product line as well.  I hope not, because I hate Macs.

This is probably due to the fact that Sony is relocating assets in Los Angeles, Santa Clara, Tokyo, Toronto, and Vancouver. Sony is hiring new personel in these areas. I think the high salaries in Europe we're too high for Sony to maintain. Remember that even Microsoft layed off like a 1000 employees, even Apple, Panasonic, Samsung, Motorola, and many more. Sony is one of the last corporations to relocate in North America and Asia I guess. The cost of maintaining operations in Europe is way to expensive.

1. xbox cuts.. first gen... where you guys alway remind us how it was a money loser...ooo...big suprise there... we're talking about THIS gen.. it's funny you guys like linving in the past only when it serves your purpose.

2. i don't feel obligated to answer your question of my education any more than i do answering questions of my current compesation scale.  i'm sure you understand.  I've answered them before only to get flamed by the local idiots who can't see past the mire of the unit level numbers, and zero basis in models or strategies, while claiming name branding somehow trumps all.

3. the fact this is tied DIRECTLY to the arm that is swingin the ps3 has clearly escaped your perception is really telling.

when sony starts reducing the size of the game creators, especially using more difficult hardware, you know this isn't good..

or at least you SHOULD know...;)

1. there's nothing to "prove wrong"..  SCEE is laying off people...   that's the point...

2. "business layoffs" are one thing, regional specific layoffs are different.

3. the "redundant jobs" could hold some cred, but not enough to explain why so many only a few short months after the rollout.

4. if the ps3 was as successful as you claim it will be, sony wouldh't have to worry about money...;)

i made no conclusions.. i only said it can't be good... and that people are paying dearly for it....

maybe if the ps3 was selling better you wouldn't be so defensive...

1. xbox cuts.. first gen... where you guys alway remind us how it was a money loser...ooo...big suprise there... we're talking about THIS gen.. it's funny you guys like linving in the past only when it serves your purpose.

2. i don't feel obligated to answer your question of my education any more than i do answering questions of my current compesation scale. i'm sure you understand.

What kind of "guy" would I be?  And why would I have claimed the Xbox to be a failure since I actually purchased it at launch?   I'm not a fan of plastic, metal, and silicone.

the kind of "guy" that can't see reality for what it is, rather for what you want it to be...;)

ie; cows.

[QUOTE="Eltroz"]I know Sony will say it has nothing to do about PS3 or money but people do not get laid off when things are going good.Javy03

You do not lay off people unless you HAVE TO.  This will effect how people look at the company, and no company wants to be looked at as uncaring to its employees and a money grabber, which is what this makes sony look like.  Sure companies fire people.  But since you said microsoft, please, provide a link where they have layed off people. The fact is you can't, microsoft is making money, and so would not fire anyone.  Sony is losing money by the bucket fulls, and is massivly changing itself.  End of story.

4. if the ps3 was as successful as you claim it will be, sony wouldh't have to worry about money...;) ramey70

So why did Microsoft fire anyone?  Why did Exxon Mobil let almost 500 people go?

comparing one arm  (SCEE) to full entities like MS (with many, many arms) or Exxon (also with many arms) really speaks volumes.

look you just don't understand the topic.

move on. ;)

edit: out for lunch.  cross your fingers for the soon-to-be-unemployed.  They didn't deserve it, imo...:(

In the comment I directly addressed, you mentioned Sony, not SCEE.  In addition I also posted that Microsoft's Windows arm fired people.  Is it losing money?  The people fired from Exxon Mobil were part of the exploration arm.  You'll be hard pressed to find anyone thinking that they are having trouble on that front.

A profit when a business expected almost 20% more IS a loss in there books.  Why? Because investors see it as a failing in the company, lose interests, and and the stock price lowers.  That is a loss.  Read the full article please.

Sony is falling appart from the inside out.

The titanic is starting to sink folks.

Ezgam3r

Amazing. Are you familiar with the term streamlining? Microsoft laid off 214 people just last june. Are they sinking as well?

link? i'd love to read how they were laid off from the xbox360's side of the building, like SCEE is to sony...;)

Here you go

In 2004, Microsoft laid off 76 people in the Xbox unit. In 2003, the company cut more than 150 Microsoft Consulting Services employees from the payroll.

Microsoft's fiscal 2006 ends on June 30. On June 28, Microsoft made some internal tweaks to its channel and Microsoft Business Solutions units, moving its Small and Mid-market Solutions and Partners (SMS&P) group to report to Chief Operating Officer Kevin Turner. As part of the move, former SMS&P head Orlando Ayala is moving to the emerging markets group.

------------------------

Are you trying to claim ownage from what happened in 2004 with the OG Xbox1 ?!?!? I hope you read that carefully because the layoffs in 2006 has nothing to do with the Xbox division. The article regarding Sony is recent news that could have effects on current products not old news affecting a console soon to lose its support.

Game On...

Um, no it's not.  A loss is when your receivables are less than your expenditures.  This is basic business.   Posting a loss is simple, you either file one with the SEC or you do not.  Unless of course you're Enron.

A loss can have many different meanings in business.  If you expect to make 20% more then you did, its considered a loss.  If your stock prices fall, it is considered a loss.  You are still LOSSING 20% of that profit, and no company restructures if it is making a good profit, thats not good business.  Good business is adapting yes,  but not completly restructuring.Â
