its just a shame that now that sega is a shadow of its former self suddenly its "ok" for gaming websites to bash its games

look here in GS:

super mario bros 8.3

super mario bros 2 8.0

super mario bros 3 9.0

super mario world 8.5

now lets take a look at sonic

sonic 7.3 ??!?!?! super mario bros 1 and 2 get an 8.3 and an 8 while sonic gets a 7.3?!?!?!?!

sonic 2 7.5 oh you have got to be kidding me

sonic 3 8.0 so the highest score a sonic game is allowed to receive is the same as the lowest score a mario game is allowed to get?

now you would think this would end here but wait:

comix zone 6.6

streets of rage 6.7

shinobi 3 7.0

so yeah... now a days its "ok" to diss old sega games

The SNES totally destroyed the Megadrive . It had better sound , graphics and games . zekere
That's debatable. Plenty of Genesis games had superior programming or better teams behind it. For example, you won't see anything resembling Toe Jam & Earl on the SNES. As I said, I personally felt it was a very close contest, with the SNES winning by a pretty small margin, but in the end, I don't think there were any real losers in the fourth generation. Genesis or SNES, you could still have a lot of fun.

Most definitely. Games were made with higher quality back then, rather than just slapping advanced graphics on them like they do now-a-days.

I missed out on the Genesis man. I was a Super Nintendo kid, which I dont regret but...

I wish these companies would rally together and just re-release these systems and games. Can you imagine? The systems would be like 30 bucks by today's standards and the games like 5. That would be a dream come true.

You know there was something I noticed yesterday. There really aren't many games with quick fun to use mechanics and controls and colourful visuals. Something you can start having fun just running around and playing and then get into.

When I looked I realised I had the Sonic game and everything else belied the fact that those games were actually very challenging (Space Channel 5, Viewtiful Joe). This is where the 16-bit genre really stood out for me, lots of colourful games with easy to grasp controls and mechanics that were fundementally fun rather than trying to make a game engaging via complexity.

Most games now are entertaining enough but the style of entertainment is far more stressful than pure fun. I don't think many games in my collection are actually "fun". Challenging and engaging sure, but fun?

It's really hard to say just whether I enjoyed the DC or the Megadrive more. Very close call. I guess I did play more on the DC than the Megadrive but then Sonic is responsible for my gaming habit...

Also, SNES had far superior sound and better graphics. ActRaiser and Super Castlevania IV sound leagues better than any Genesis game. Also, imo the SNES controller was better.

AvIdGaMeR444

TBH right now it's a moot point. They are both very much decidely 16-bit in appearance and sound. The one thing that has survived is the fact that the MD's action legacy has survived intact to distinguish it from the SNES. The SNES only really shows any potential over the Megadrive in a very select few games anyway (ToP, CT), most of the games were certainly in the ballpark.

TBH it is more like comparing the GC and PS2 which are more or less in the same ball park.

AvIdGaMeR444

actually i consider castlevania bloodlines/generations for the genesis superior to super castlevania IV

super castlevania IV had better graphics, and more levels, as for sound... its debatable, the sound effect were better on the SNES but artistically speaking the genesis soundtrack was composed by the same person that composed the simphony of the night soundtrack

castlevania genesis/bloodlines, had more sub weapons, two playable characters. better gameplay, a special move and a special attack for each character, some leves had multiple paths and finally the wasnt censored you had full blood and gore (in the US version anyway)

Well I dont know if the Genesis was the best, but it was ok. I still have my WORKING Genesis from when they came out. Not a launch console, but I picked it up about 3 months after they came out.

Honestly I only bought like 3-4 games for it then...But now I have quite the collection of games. Its a good system and I do play it from time to time still...

The SNES had fully 3D games, like Star Fox and Stunt Racer FX.

And Yoshi's Island had the highest quality 2D graphics and sound of any Genesis/SNES game, I believe.

i liked both snes and genesis, but as a kid i always went aww to super nintendo games, cause they were more colors and better music than the genesis. megaman x really help me realize why the snes was better than the genesis. mario kart was another game that made me love the feeling the snes bring to its players.

genesis was cool, but wasnt the best of its generation, maybe second. if you need proof which was better of its time, just search out most played 16 bit games, and witness the amount of snes games.

your right about landstalker

wonderboy most people see it as a master system game, the megadrive one was just a remake

two cruel dudes... never heard of it

streets of rage is mentioned in the second post

flashback and coolspot are multiplat, they were on the megadrive, SNES, AMIGA and the PC

it was easy to tell the difference between a snes and a genesis games, based on video if you were a genesis/snes owner. the same could apply if you compared a game build off of the gamecube hardware and ported to the ps2.

as for comix zone and shinobi... they both deserved better than that

st1ka

Shinoboi is good. Comix Zone not so good. I consider it very overated and only list it because everyone seems to like it. Its just not really even that fun imo. I read the GS review and its pretty much how I feel about the game. Not one person named any Phantasy Star from what I've seen.

General Chaos anyone?

Super Street Fighter II

The Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island

Now you're playing with super power!

sneslover

Alien 3, are you kidding? The Mega Drive version was FAR supperior!! Also that quote should read "Now you are playing with 8-bit processor power!!" Hope you don't like more than 3 sprites on screen at once with your action games, or full resolution for that matter.

I loved my Mega Drive, it got a lot more playtime than my SNES anyway.

Treasure was one of the best developers aroun back then. Ah memories

[QUOTE="st1ka"]

[QUOTE="Rahnyc4"]maybe when he said full 3d on the snes, he meant this.... BubbyJello

the backgrounds are in 2D, as for the rest it seems as 3D as virtua racer and starfox, what game is that anyway?

It's Vortex.

And when I said fully 3D, I didn't mean the backgrounds. I just thought that Virtua Racing's ground, and trees were 2D. I thought the ground was like Mode 7 style.

Ahhh, Virtua Racing MD was FULLY 3D and far more impressive than that overhyped POS Star Fox. My god, I will never understand the hype for that game, it was rubbish! Same goes for the Donkey Kong games, ugh.

The SNES totally destroyed the Megadrive . It had better sound , graphics and games . zekere

Yes I just love the echoy, tinny sound of the "superior" SFC sound chip  The SFC chip was crap for sound effects, especially the farty sounding explosions and lightning sounds in games such as Chou Makai Mura and Super Aleste. Show me ANY SFC game as impressive looking OR sounding as Bare Knuckle II, Gunstar Heroes and Monster World IV, then we can talk. Try putting any SFC scrolling fighter up against the Bare Knuckle games, including the first one, what a goddamn joke. Same goes for shumps. I will say it again, the SFC was ONLY good at RPGs and slow, boring Mario-esque platformers because it had a S*** 8-BIT processor. All the colour and crappy mode-7 in the world could not help the system with that processor.

Fun is purely subjective

You could have more fun playing in the mud than on a Genesis / Mega Drive

Personally I rathered my Snes.

Not true, Gunstar Heroes was the genesis best game, but the SNES beats the genesis hands down.

Try Axelay. SHMUP. Great graphics (only possible on the SFC), great music (especially that first stage). And it's from Konami, who knows a thing or two about SHMUPs (Gradius III is also on the SFC). There's also Super R-Type (a port of R-Type II) and R-Type III (both from Irem). And as for beaters...well, Super Street Fighter 2, IIRC, only went to the SNES. And what about Super Metroid for an action/adventure that was both visually stunning and full of intense action when needed?
