People are going to hate me, but Super Mario Bros. 2.

(If it makes you feel any better, I felt that Super Mario Bros. 3 trumped them both)

KOTOR2 was garbage , it was odviouslly rushed to all hell with numerous bugs, and had one of the worse wtf endings ever...

That beign said Freespace 2 is a great example.

Sir-Marwin105

Even if it was rushed, it was still better.

How it had one of the worse endings ever! You either flew away (and that was it) or you stayed on the planet.. The game was also entirelly too easy later on.. I am sorry but the first had much more meaningful dialog, a story that could be followed, a actual twist in it that was amazing, was quite a bit harder, far more interesting planets, BETTER graphics, better characters...

Kreia was far more interesting than Bastilla, the character interaction was better, Atton > Carth, Mandalore > Canderous (even though they are the same person), and you had more powers. And a bunch of other stuff.

Super Mario Bros. 3 Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past, Twilight Princess Baten Kaitos Origins (well, prequel) Ogre Battle 64 Donkey Kong Country 2 Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan 2 (I'm not writing the full name) Mario Kart 64, DS Perfect Dark (if you consider that a sequel to Goldeneye) Resident Evil 4 Super Smash Bros. Melee Pokémon Silver I'll stop there. It can be hard to define "better" though. A rehash can be "better" but not worth a higher score due to not much new to make it as enjoyable as the first.

No she wasn't Kreia was some overbearing patronizing crone who betrays you in the end.... Powers? the game had plenty to begin with the problem was there was too many and they got too powerful.. The game had an awful ending and the story half the time didn't make much sense.. It was already hard to understand how 3 supremely powerful Sith lords just popped up out of no where in such little time.

Halo 3 > 1&2

Silent Hill 2 > Silent Hill 1 (and, 3&4)

Resident Evil 2 > 1

Does FF7 > 1-6 count?

I could probably name more, but those are my favorites.

For me...

Spyro 2 > Spyro
Half-Life 2 > Half-Life
Day of the Tentacle > Manic Mansion (though to be fair, the gameplay mechanics were considerably different)
Super Mario Bros 3 > New Super Mario Bros > Super Mario Bros 1
Metal Gear Solid 3 > Metal Gear Solid
Command & Conquer; TS > TD

[QUOTE="Ragnarok1051"]GOW2 and KH2.Sir-Marwin105
I disagree with GoW.

God of War II took everything that made God of War (I) so awesome, and made it even better. The combat was improved, with more moves, there were more bosses, the graphics and sound were better, the adventure was longer, there were my special abilities, better platforming elements, and tons of other stuff. The only thing God of War (I) had that was superior to the second one was the storyline. But everything in God of War II more than makes up for that.

Also, God of War (I) had about... two or three bosses? God of War II had at least eight bosses, and they were a lot more fun.

Also, I think a sequel should always be better than the original. That's the least gamers should ask for. They need to improve upon the formula; not make it worse.

To name some:

Super Smash Brothers Melee>Super Smash Brothers

God of War II>God of War (I)

Sonic Adventure 2: Battle>Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut

Banjo Tooie>Banjo Kazooie

Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door>Paper Mario

Jak 3>Jak 2 (Very slightly, though.)

Mario Party 2>Mario Party (1)

The best way to make a sequal better than the original is to plan on making the sequal before even releasing the original, instead of deciding to make one after seeing how well the original sold. That way the devs will already have ideas and be prepared.

Pikmin 2 was better than Pikmin in every conceivable way. Pikmin was great, Pikmin 2 was near perfect.

Bauldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn was also much better than the first Baldur's Gate.

MetroidPrimePwn

Good Examples. Thou Any Pikmin was awesome, justs get better and better.

Pokemon Gold and Silver were better than Red and Blue. Diamond and Pearl are better than Ruby and Sapphire.Sir-Marwin105
I agree with the diamon/pearl statement. Ruby/sapphire was just plain disappointing. Especially considering that many of the old pokemon like pidgey and such were thought to be extinct seeing as they never showed up.

I still say gold/silver is where the series peaked.

MGS3 is the best one.

I agree, MGS3 was the best, but I figured we were talking about the second games in a series.

[QUOTE="Big_Boss465"]

jalexbrown

I won't argue on this one too much, but why do you think that? I thought MGS was much better than the original. MGS2 took the story and overcomplicated it, not to mention it got rid of Snake for that whiny Raiden for over half the game. I really enjoyed MGS2, don't get me wrong, but how does it possibly compare to MGS?

I thought the CQC was just fleshed out really well and I liked the gameplay elements that were added such as the first person view. Your right about the story being overcomplicated, but I never saw that as a bad thing actually. I liked playing that game so much that it was enjoyable to go back and play the game again and again so I could try to find out what the hell was going on. I'm a fan of movies where it takes multiple viewings to really get at the core of what the director istrying to sayat or what the story is about (Donnie Darko, The Fountain, Tarkovsky's Solaris) and that is probably why enjoyed MGS2's story more than the original though it was overwhelming. It wasconfusing, butthere was so much that Kojima did with the story that I found it to be fun to go back anddisectiton my own through multiple playthroughs. Different strokes for different folks really. The first one was amazing too though, don't get me wrong and I do prefer MGS3's twists and turns to MGS2. Raiden didn't bug me either, introducing him just intrigued me more as to what was going on in the game. For some reason he never struck me as whiny either, haha, guess I didn't pick up on everything.

I don't disagree by any means, but Half-Life was just as amazing. Half-Life was more revolutionary because it did more new stuff, but Half-Life 2 was a better game.

It doesn't look like an RE game, either, but it looks amazing...much better than even RE4.

The old Resident Evil games are so dated and boring compared to new games, it's almost unbearable.

In the old Resident Evils, the camera angle was horrible, which made the controls feel awkward. There weren't many enemies to fight. It was more about exploration than blowing everything out of your way. Overly difficult puzzles. The save points were too far away from each other. Horrible graphics. (Talking about GameCube ports.) Your character moves like a tank. Limited inventory space. Useless knife. Not enough ammo.

And so on, and so on. Resident Evil 4 fixed all these problems by giving players a behind the back camera view, more shooting, less puzzle solving, more ammo, a useful knife, fast paced action, and a heck of a lot more stuff.

One big reason why people like the old Resident Evils more than Resident Evil 4 is because they think they have to like the original ones more than the newer, improved one. Resident Evil 4 changes the Resident Evil formula drastically, but that's what makes it so darn awesome.

All other Resident Evils, at least in my opinion, suck.

This is the problem. You did have to fight a lot with the controls in the old Resident Evil games, but that's part of what gives the games their nostalgic feeling. The visuals were good back in the Playstation days, although the Gamecube ports were rush jobs, so they don't count for much. I never felt like the save points were too far apart, either. The old Resident Evil games were not only awesome in their own right, but they were also the template for the first two Dino Crisis games, which were awesome games as well. If you don't like the older Resident Evil games than that's your prerogative, but I disagree with most of your arguments.

Half Life 2 (some will probably disagree)

jalexbrown

I don't disagree by any means, but Half-Life was just as amazing. Half-Life was more revolutionary because it did more new stuff, but Half-Life 2 was a better game.

Yeah, I pretty much agree with all of that.

No way. Resident Evil 4 was an amazing game, but it was a terrible Resident Evil. As I stated before, I am much more fond of Resident Evil 2. I really enjoyed Resident Evil 4, but it's not the best Resident Evil, because I don't think of it as a Resident Evil game.

wow dude, we're exactly alike in this regard. i dont consider re4 on re game too

though re3 is my favorite :P

I'm glad to meet someone else with that view, because I am hated by most people for thinking that way abour RE4. People who praise RE4 as the best RE either haven't played the older ones, or they're too young to appreciate their quality. That said, I do want RE5.

I like the original Resident Evil better. I perfer more puzzles than shooting. Exploring is major because after all its a horror game, and you are exploring dangerous scary places. The save points don't seem much different, or too far placed. The graphics weren't horrible, I thought Resident Evil RM and Zero was good. The controls were okay, but acceptable, I had no trouble moving that tank around (Probably could have work on that tho). Inventory space, you a human being and not a trunk wielding fool. Knife was useless, tho I seen people beating the whole game with just the knife. It could have been redone and bettered, I agree on that. o.O Not enough ammo, survival horror, not action land. You are surviveing a horror on what little you have. They did not suck, they were good, they could have done some reworking here and there, but they lost a good deal of what they were and what some people liked about them.

Well, really, these aren't just MY arguments. All of these complaints have been said by tons of people. I have heard people say the same thing I just said many times before... Capcom obviously listened and "fixed" it. Maybe you like the more puzzled based and scarier typed Resident Evil games, but I like the fast paced action a lot more. And unfortunately for some people, you probably will never see another Resident Evil game like numbers 0-3 ever again. Most people like the new one better, so why waste the time going back to the old one?

Also, I only have Resident Evil Remake and Resident Evil 4. I haven't played 0, 2, or 3, but I heard they are pretty much the same.

i disagree. HL 2 did just build upon HL 1, it is very good but no way better than Hl 1. while agree, that if i play both games side by side, without taking into account anything else, HL 2 would be better, but that's not how i judge a game

I'm not totally understanding what you're saying here. You're saying you liked Half-Life better than Half-Life 2, but then you plainly state that if you put them side-by-side, Half-Life 2 would be better.

Well, I guess the original Resident Evils tried to be more realistic and scary. Like in real life, when you lose the last bullet and you are trapped in a room with a zombie... It's scary. Also, I know that people can't hold that many things in real life, but many video games allow you to hold about ten guns at once. The original ones were about exploration, horror, and puzzle solving. Resident Evil 4 is about shooting, shooting, and more shooting. And that's how I like it.

But I do wish it was a bit creepier. There's not nearly enough suspence.

Thats what happen when you get action and itsshooting, shooting, shooting. There could have been some changes, but it didnt need to be drastically change that much. It lost a great deal of what it was once was, and what made it Resident Evil.

i am saying that if i forget which game came first, which game came when, which game added what, then i consider HL 2 to be better. if i rate games by how much fun i had with them i played them first few times ( by which hl 1 wins).

Really, Resident Evil 4 is so different from all the other Resident Evil games that the only thing that ties it together to the other games is its storyline, name, and herbs. (Gotta love them herbs!) But whenever you take a different direction with anything, there will always be the people that don't like it. But the majority of people do like it. It gets better sales because most people find it more fun... So they did change it for a good reason.

And come on, there's enough of those old Resident Evil games, anyway. All those spin-offs and such. Honestly, could there really be that many more differences they could've made without changing it around a lot? Every series has to end somewhere. The Resident Evil series practically is dead. Resident Evil 4 and 5 are pretty much an entirely different series, at least to most people.
