Well, I guess the original Resident Evils tried to be more realistic and scary. Like in real life, when you lose the last bullet and you are trapped in a room with a zombie... It's scary. Also, I know that people can't hold that many things in real life, but many video games allow you to hold about ten guns at once. The original ones were about exploration, horror, and puzzle solving. Resident Evil 4 is about shooting, shooting, and more shooting. And that's how I like it.
But I do wish it was a bit creepier. There's not nearly enough suspense.

Thats what happen when you get action and itsshooting, shooting, shooting. There could have been some changes, but it didnt need to be drastically change that much. It lost a great deal of what it was once was, and what made it Resident Evil.
Really, Resident Evil 4 is so different from all the other Resident Evil games that the only thing that ties it together to the other games is its storyline, name, and herbs. (Gotta love them herbs!) But whenever you take a different direction with anything, there will always be the people that don't like it. But the majority of people do like it. It gets better sales because most people find it more fun... So they did change it for a good reason.
And come on, there's enough of those old Resident Evil games, anyway. All those spin-offs and such. Honestly, could there really be that many more differences they could've made without changing it around a lot? Every series has to end somewhere. The Resident Evil series practically is dead. Resident Evil 4 and 5 are pretty much an entirely different series, at least to most people.
That's the shame, at least as far as I'm concerned. There won't be another Resident Evil game deserving of the title. RE4/RE5 don't deserve to be called Resident Evil, and, in fact, calling them Resident Evil at all is misleading. It just goes to prove that even Capcom can become money hounds at some point. RE4 could've easily held a different title altogether, but I think there'd be a few less people praising it had it had a totally different name.
