Lol.
@charizard1605 The idea of how much Shenmue 3 will cost. I actually don't think Suzuki will take it to $70+ million again. The original Shenmue was more than a game back on the Dreamcast, it was pretty much its own living, breathing, franchise (and it was just one game at the time lol).
I have a funny feeling this won't be a 21st century AAA production. It'll most likely be one of those Japanese style AA games, which means he can make it for significantly cheaper.
so is anyone funding the rest of the game. because 5-10M ain't enough
Could be a Sega/Sony joint thing if they wanna go full AAA?
They probably could do it full justice at around $20 million. They don't need to spend money converting the old games into 35mm film prints and putting it in Japanese cinemas like they did back in 2001 lol.

Maybe, but then why not fully fund it themselves?
Unless this is just to gauge interest. But even then, this is a major AAA 50M style open world game. I'm just surprised. Well, both by the fact that it exists and that it's a kickstarter

Most likely a Sega/Sony pairing, and another Bayonetta 2 scenario. Dev wants to make the game, Sega be like "LOL bitch you high? we poor", and Sony is like wait, we'll do it. Sega's not exactly poor, but they aren't exactly doing larger scale projects or taking as many shots.
I would think that 2 million is a bloodstained scenario of we just need to show the investors that our fans will put their money where their mouth is, and Shenmue fans will do that, because Shenmue fans are crazy assholes. The larger question of are there enough crazy assholes to make it all work when the game officially comes out is another matter entirely, but we live in a world where Shenmue 3 suddenly might exist. It's a new dawn deadline.
Honestly at that point Sony should have just kept it fucking going with totally ridiculous announcements.
The game is basically funded, they're over $1.9 million right now and it doesn't really look like it's slowing down. I think they're going to fund most of the game, Sega, Yu Suzuki and whoever, they just wanted to get start up funds and gauge community interest to see if it's still a feasible and wanted project, well they got their answer, $2 million in less than 12 hours is impressive.

Truly an important point.
It's amazing to see it, but, like all of these "extremely desired games from the past", can tehy live up to their expectations? Will Shenmue 3, when it releases in 3-4 years (no way it's earlier) feel solid, thight and well designed enough to compare to teh games of the future?
We'll see. Having watched some reactions to TLG, alot of meh is flying around (including my own to be 100% honest).
What I find so interesting about this isn't that people have asked for this and putting their money where their mouth is, it's that I find the rewards on the donation levels to be highly incentivized toward contributing. Early access versions. Physical and digital copies when the game is done, collector swag. They really did a good job tiering the reward/donations just right. Anyhow, right now they're a hair under their target of $2million, with about 20K backers thus far, that's quite a contribution for the average supporter.
Anyhow, check out the backers who paid the most. Four people pledged $10K or more, 604 over $500 or more. Either there's some committed fans out there with deep pockets, or this is corporate backing masquerading as organic fan support. That would be sad if that were the case.
Also remember that the original Shenmue was one of the most ambitious and technically advanced games at the time. They built everything from scratch. They don't need to do that with Unreal Engine 4.
On top of that, Yu Suzuki did crazy shit like research the actual weather and stuff from 1980's Japan down to the day and date, and hired an actual architect to design the environment. Those cost a lot of money. I'm not sure if he's doing the weather, but he bought the architect from the first game lol #NoFucksGiven
I'd love it if he spent heaps of money with all that creativity stuff though. One of the reasons I play Shenmue II after all these years is because of that insane amount of detail everywhere. It really feels like you're in Hong Kong, and later mainland China, with real characters everywhere. #sogood
Shenmue 3 just got funded. Is that a record time to reach $2,000,000?
who cares? if witcher 3 cost $60,000,000 milion, i dont think a $2,000,000 game that even sony can't be bothered to fund, is worth worrying about.
You don't seem to care about a lot of things. First, you didn't care about Doom 4, then Fallout 4's shitty graphics, now you don't care about Shenmue 3.
The weird part is you seem to comment about everything you don't care about.

I don't think it means they can't get additional funding. I get a feeling it was more a PR stunt to bolster hype for the game, but at the same time contributors were able to get something out of it, guaranteed copies, early access, and collector swag. I think this kind of organic hype approach probably garnered more chatter than if they just announced Sony financed the sequel themselves.

I haven't seen Doom 4, its difficult to care about something that i haven't chosen to bother with yet.
I dont think fallout 4's graphics are at all shitty..
Shenmue 3, i really dont care about, i dont see what the fuss is about with this game, thats why i came into the thread.
the only thing thats fucking weird is that people seem to be flipping about because someone announced a kick starter,
It would be mildly funny if you were a troll, but somehow I think you're serious with your narrow-minded opinions.

Let's not get carried away, it's a bullshit forklift simulator for assholes. So it doesn't exactly have a lot to live up to.
At the least Yu Suzuki is out of whatever dungeon Sega was oppressing that poor man in, maybe it can lead to other Sega things being created. Valkyria Chronicles 2, Binary Domain 2, Vanquish 2, Yakuza games not having to go to hell and back to be localized, a new Panzer Dragoon or Otogi maybe. The possibilities are endless if we pretend the impossible can happen now.

I was just reading the Shenmue 3 kickstarter FAQ, it seems like Sega is taking a hands-off approach with this. It could actually be a mostly Sony effort....
Kick starter = confirmed, okies TC is desperate. :P
Already met its goal, and it's still going up.
SOB , it's something near 200$ per 2nd and it still have 31 days to go .... O_o
Shenmue 3 isn’t only the fastest game to raise a million dollars on Kickstarter, it’s also the fastest game to raise two million dollars.

Going from the past Shenmues, Yu will require like a trillion or two so just sayin. :P

its not tin foil hat territory, its real world. yes its got its funding, but its a hell of a long, expensive road ahead. If they had announced it as a first party exclusive, already in development, i can understand folk who enjoyed the original getting excited. but this? i dont get it.
No, real world is recognizing these are industry vets that know how much money they need to make their own game.
Makes you wonder if this has been in the works for some time, or sitting on a shelf. 2 million seems like a low ball for such a high production value game.
I wonder what they do for voice work. What a lot of people once hated seems to have become cult classic.

The IP has very few bigger fans than me so I'm pulling for it. New win 10 DX12 PC with a copy of shen 3 and I'll be dancing.

There's probably other money that they've raised privately.
In the film industry I work in, investors only chip in when other investors do. The conversation is always like "Okay, we'll chip in a million if you can secure a million from those other guys first". Sometimes those other guys say the exact same thing, but that's another story.
So what probably happened was Sony (or some other big investor) said "If you can raise this money by yourself, we'll put in our sum of money too". You can bet that since Shenmue smashed records, those investors that Suzuki had previously talked to now have his undivided attention.
They probably won't give him the $100 billion he wants though lol.

Yeah, it's great you fellas are getting what you've been waiting for this entire time.
Can't say I care too much though.
@FrozenLiquid:
You are probably right. As cult classic as shenmue has become it is still a risky big budget release. On game sites like this it seems silly not to fund it, I'm sure, but looking at what is popular now and how the game actually works, I could see the newer gaming community not taking a liking to the game.

There's absolutely no doubt there's a great deal of nostalgia involved and even I wonder about a Shen3 since when the first one came out there wasn't much like it but since then we've seen huge worlds with trillions of lines of dialog and huge go anywhere open worlds with tons & tons of stuff to do with both surface & air vehicles and awesome combat and great story's soooooo, Yu has his work cut out for him but I'm so happy he's finally gonna give it a go. :)

Agreed. We've come a long way, but I still think people will be more than happy if he just makes more Shenmue.
