In 14 years or more a lot of things change. At the time Shenmue was cutting edge tech, but now part 3 can be made significantly cheaper (obviously) and it's not like they're trying to make the next Call of Duty. And then we don't know how much money Sony will add to the final product. It's not like they'll need a budget for advertising.
$2 mill assured Shenmue 3 would be made but it would be mostly narrative or movie driven.
$5 mill would make Shenmue 3 on par with what the first two were with an added feature or two.
$10 mill would make Shenmue 3 a full open world game with many new features and expanded battle abilities.
I was hoping for the $5 mill mark and as of yesterday, it made it. I'm glad to be a backer and I eagerly anticipate the release of this title and hope that it will be successful enough to fund a 4th and final Shenmue that completes the story.

@a-new-guardian: Suzuki stated that he did not want to compress the chapters of the story into the third game and would continue with his original vision of 4 to 5 games to flesh out all 11 chapters.
HD versions of the first two games are up to Sega. Suzuki only has rights to create a sequel. No rights to the first two games. There's a petition floating about but I don't believe it will help.
PS4 is getting a physical release at the least via the Kickstarter at the $60 pledge tier. So it would be like preordering 2 years in advance.

This could have reached 10M if Suzuki have said from the get-go at E3 that he needed at least 5M to help fund the game. That way it would have reached 5M easily in less then one day (instead of the 2M in one day) and the funds would have gradually increased from there to 10M by the deadline..

He didn't **** up by going $2 million. Last Shenmue sequel came out 14 years ago. The amount of people that have played Shenmue today is very low. This kickstarter would be doing much worse if it wasn't announced on stage at E3.

But being that this was announced at E3, where millions of people are watching, he could have asked for much more the his initial asking of 2M. he should have asked for 5M and he probably would have got it in the same time spam he got the 2M.
That being said, i think what really hurt this kickstarter was all the news that was saying Sony was to help fund the project.
