Or maybe we'll just start using our fingerprints for video game purchases and our console will require our print to authorize a purchase.

i highly doubt it, publishers know that would be going too far and would alienate the majority of gamers.

Then IGN will write an article saying we are a bunch of self intitled whiners who steal money from developers if we oppose it

We haven't seen the effects of an online pass. I'll be willing to bet only the major titles use the online pass. Only ones with major demand. I can honestly see both kinds of passes hurting smaller budget games. The numbers will tell.

BTW single player pass is already here. It's called OnLive :P

I mean, Activision is trying to sneak it in there with their elite thingy. Yeah, okay, it's for stat tracking and all these weird little options but who is to say they'll stop there.AncientDozer
All the stat tracking stuff is free. You only pay for Elite if you want subscription content, which includes DLC and whatever else they announce. :o

People are just going from one extreme to another, developers have brought out online passes for select games and now everyone is going on like you won't be able to play a game unless your DNA is on the disk.

You'll quit gaming because you have to put in a 10 digit code before you can play a game? PC gamers have been doing it for years.

This^ will most likely happen. Tie games like XBLA and Content. It is tied to your account and your console. If you play on the original console, you can use any account. If you are playing on a different console, then you need the account you bought the item with, to play.

That's dumb and the only reason MP passes happen is because MP is considered an additional part of the game, not the main game.

You'll quit gaming because you have to put in a 10 digit code before you can play a game? PC gamers have been doing it for years.bobbetybob

Not as long as you're thinking; PC games have had CD keys for a very long time but up until a few years ago there was no online authentication nor were they irrevocably tied to accounts; multiplayer checked for simultaneous players using a single key but didn't care how many players used a key when they did so one at a time. Before the dawn of online accounts PC gamers regularly loaned games among friends, complete with the CD keys, and their friends could install it and play, even online, getting the full experience the original owner had (which they lost access to for the duration of the loan because the CD had to be in the drive to play). This usually isn't an option nowadays.

You'd better believe greedy publishers drool at the thought of bringing this sort of restriction to consoles. Transforming used copies into limited demos or worthless coasters unless paid for again and again is their ultimate dream, even though this may well hurt them in the long term as those that regularly buy and sell used copies end up buying fewer games overall due to the negligible resale value.

No all games by EA will have online passes. So will all games by Sony and Ubisoft. And if they are doing it, it will make sense for every other publisher to do it too

PC games have been using that for over a decade now. I don't see the problem with developers/publishers wanting verification, so long as it does not require a constant internet connection. Legal owners really should not care.

pc games do it because they are installed, so if they sold the game they would still be able to play it; meaning that hundreds of people could pass around a single disk and everyone would be able to play it. with consoles, the game is running from the disk, so the only reason devs/pubs have to do it is to make money off of the used market

This will never happen--Companies will simply eliminate single player all together. Yup, you'll need multiplayer for the next LA Noire or Half-Life.

If we're to have these "online passes" then i want the option to purchase games at discount prices, brand new, with the online portion stripped. Same with the singleplayer, I want to be able to purchase COD for £30 without the singleplayer.

Shhhhhhh! Don't give the developers any ideas!

But you're probably right. Before you know it, all video games will be ID locked just like weapons in Metal Gear Solid 4. XD

And we'll have video game launderers like Drebin.

They will require your personal info, list of fears, address, credit card numbers, bank accounts, fingerprints, retinal scans, DNA, photo ID, and shoe size to unlock single player, and if you miss one of those things, they will call you a thief.

I'd buy a lot less games if that happened. Sure, most games are down to $20 a year after release new, but I don't know how many will get there without a used game market bringing them down.

Also, the ability to sell games would make it difficult for me to take risks with my purchases.

No. Devs make you have passes because they have to pay for the bandwidth for you to play on their servers.

It wouldn't surprise me if a single-player pass were to happen. Or, I wonder if eventually you'll be REQUIRED to install the game on your system, and the game is only good for one install-- after that, it's useless. It would curb used game sales, something of which the game industry doesn't seem to approve.

You don't have to be online to play the single player portion of a game.
