Am I REALLY the only one skeptical about Fallout: New Vegas? Obsidian recently released a trailer with gameplay footage and I must say, the game looks dissapointing. It was full of recycled entities from Fallout 3 and the game engine was not updated at all (and its 4 years old mind you). I've watched it several times and the landscape is pretty much exactly the same as Fallout 3's except with cactiand tumbleweeds (they used the exact same ground textures I believe). Face it: its an expansion pack that should not be sold full retail price.

...and doesnt anyone else think that its about time that the animations were improved? We're getting the same ice-skating from TES IV: Oblivion in 2010.

So lets see....this all comes from the way the game looks, rather then what is actually the most important part of an RPG, its gameplay and storey?

Yes, never mind that most of the new features in the game are designed to make it more like the original games rather then the inferior spin-off that came out 3 years ago, lets just concentrate on the graphics.

In my humble opinion, Bethesda could have made the post apocalyptic landscape far more interesting...very dissapointing. The difficulty was also pretty erratic. You were either breezing through the game scoring one shot kill headshots in VATS or getting your ass beaten to a pulp by the level scaled super mutants with miniguns.

The only new combat oriented features are the melee cues and special attacks. Companions? Those were in Fallout 3 and I'm sure on the PC there have been many a mod that dealt with this. Oh yeah and I forgot that you could modify your weapon by attaching a scope to negate the awkward combat out of VATS...yawn.

Only interesting new feature is the reputation system and thats it.

I loved Fallout 3, so if New Vegas is very similar to F3 then I'll most likely love it. An 8.5 would be a great score.

The game is as a whole, designed to be a lot less combat oriented like the original Fallout games. Companians were useless in Fallout 3 so its nice that they actually have use this time around. SPECIAL will actually matter this time around for conversations. Reputation may seem like a small feature, but based off Fallout 2 its a central component of the game.

Fallout 3's RPG mechanics were just terrible. The entire point of this game is to bring it closer in-line to the original games in terms of its design. Not to mention obsidian is far better at doing writing, storytelling, and consequences then Bethesda. Fallout 3 lacked any sort of meaningfull choices, and its writing and characters were all mundane and boring.

Thats not to mention all the mod-derieved features that are being included in this one, like Hardcore mod (which is totally going to change the game) and weapon customazations.

Looks the same as Fallout 3, which is still one good looking game. Hopefully they fix up the game though...I don't know if it's just me, but I've had some serious freezing issues in that one on PC (mostly when I stay in building areas too long) :?.

I played Fallout 3 on my 360 a few weeks ago, and it still looks visually great at times. But the animations DO stick out now as looking aged, and they stuck out even more during the New Vegas demo. (I saw a dog rotate 180 degrees lol)

Did anyone else share these same thoughts:

"Poo" followed by "8.5/10" followed by the facepalm of all facepalms

..It's crazy how 8.5 is considered garbage now

8.5 out of 10 is 'poo'? So it isn't just game journalists that don't know how to use a 10 point scale correctly. Obsidian have employees with a much higher pedigree in RPG creation, and since the previous fallout game was made by Bethesda they don't have much competition in creating a better 'Fallout game'. I use the term 'Fallout game' lightly because both will still only possess a modicum of intelligence in comparison to Fallout 1 and 2.

It's the same size as Fallout 3 but in an entirely new setting with entirely new (and probably good) stories and entirely new gameplay mechanics. I'll buy it.

I don't know... after Alpha Protocol I am interested in checking out some more Obsidian games. If they can write a story of similar quality in New Vegas, than I will by all means buy the game.

What I have seen so far of this game has not impressed me in the slightest. But it is made by Bethesda, so there's no way I am gonna completely rule this game out yet. ;)

Well, seeing as the Stalker series made Fallout 3 redundant for me, I have literally zero interest in New Vegas. It looks worse in everyway, and I never knew that was even possible. If it follows the same tongue in cheek, patriotic, fake plastic atmosphere of Fallout 3, then meh.

Fallout 3 was overrated. Terrible animations, unpolished gunplay, and it felt like a game from the previous generation. However, it did have nice graphics and gameplay ideas. The gunplay and the way the game felt was a huge huge huge huge turnoff.

It does look exactly like Fallout 3 for the most part, but I still think Obsidian will deliver a better game on the story front. The Vegas setting seems more appealing as well.

Open world, FPS-based, RPG/RPG-elements? They're certainly comparable. Anyhow, I'm not saying Fallout 3 is bad or anything, as I mentioned, I've never played it. STALKER filled a void where it might have been though (my desire for a open-world FPS/RPG).

At the E3 stage demo it was mentioned that there are in fact more quests than what Fallout 3 had, and more dialogue as well. Sounds good to me.

I have good hopes for Fallout: New Vegas.

  • Your skills and S.P.E.C.I.A.L. will really make the difference now. You won't be able to master everything like Fallout 3.
  • The dialogs, choices/consequences and general NPCs interaction are much improved from Fallout 3.
  • A reputation system separated from karma. You won't be able to make the entire world like you by giving a bottle of purified water to one NPC.
  • The "Hardcore Mode": Ammo will have a weight, Stimpacks takes a lot of time to work, your fractured limbs will only be healed in a clinic or using a specific skillplus a doctor's bag, the need to sleep, drink and eat, etc.
  • The setting and atmosphere will be much closer to Fallout 1 and 2 then Fallout 3, despite the graphics looking almost the same as the last Fallout game.

Fallout 3 is a great game if you've never played Stalker, but compared to Stalkers atmosphere, setting, realism... it just feels fake. It lacked the feeling of terror and survivalism which one would expect from a post apocolyptic game. And yes, Call Of Pripyat is AMAZING. Apart from a few really bad animations, and that annoying Bloodsucker sound / camera disorientation, it's every bit as good as Shadow Of Chernoybl for me. :)

If Stalker 2 is confirmed to be running on Cryengine 3 or Xray Engine 2, I think I won't be able to sleep from anticipation. :P

well, in all fairness, i think Stalker was going for a different "feel." obviously, the comparisons are warranted, but from my brief experience with the game, stalker seemed to focus on realism (at least, as realistic as you can get considering the story), while fallout 3 tended to be over-the-top ridiculous

Yes, never mind that most of the new features in the game are designed to make it more like the original games rather then the inferior spin-off that came out 3 years ago, lets just concentrate on the graphics.

As long as the dialogue, story and game world are more fleshed out then Fallout 3s sorry excuses, this game is a 10/10.

Your expecting pineapples from a porcupine tree.

I thought Obsidian made it clear that they were not aiming to improve the graphics fidelity because of the tight release date.
Instead they are improving the RPG elements and the story, which are FO3 GREATEST WEAKNESSES, I don't see how this is wrong.

Oh and stop being a score $%&/$%, 8.5 is one hell of a score.
