Not cel-shaded, the right word is stylized as opposed to photo realism. I'm heavily biased towards the former, of course games like Heavy Rain use a certain artstyle but I would never even consider it for debates like this one, the closer you get to realism the more boring it becomes for me.
I'm visually into games like SS, Bastion, Rayman Origins, Meat Boy, Galaxy, Ratchet. The graphics in games like Battlefield 3, Batman 2 and Skyrim actually de-hypes them for me. I get turned off when I see them. Ofcourse, if they are fun to play I can overlook the boring graphics.

Well in a way I somewhat get what you're saying about stylized, and I agree, I too enjoy those visuals as well. I don't think that it's so much the color of the visuals that you're talking about, but also its shapes, anatomy of the characters etc. Take your examples, the characters in the games you're talking about are made of very simple shapes, and imo, those usually hold a lot of personality, so in a sense they are stylized--not disagreeing with you, just enforcing your point.
That said, games such as Batman and Skyrim are highly stylized in visuals--visuals that are made to uphold a certain mood of a game. Take a look at a picture of The Witcher 2, does that look real to you? Just take a look at the color palette, granted it does look more realistic since it doesn't take a genius to figure out that Garelt has a more realistic anatomy than every single character in the Mario universe. But what the game is trying to portray in terms of visuals it does it well. The game, in many ways, is far from realistic.
Now, I do agree that I'm highly interested in game worlds that feature the elements that you're talking about, after all they're a breath of fresh air, but I don't mind games that take the more realistic approach, and even games such as these, can feature very impressive art-styles. Yes there are visuals in games that are more realistic than others, but I don't really find much of a problem with that, since I find that life outside the house that I'm currently in right now is beautiful as heck, trying to immulate that beauty more closely, and if done right, isn't necessarily a bad thing. And neither does that make the game any less artistic because of it.
Anyone else notice the TC is using pictures of the game running on a dolphin emulator? Lol. FAILnismo8000You do have to admit it looks pretty damn good on Dolphin though.

No they're not. They are pre-released screen shots.
Quality of art is subjective,so this thread is kind of pointless.
Still,I guess there's no harm in stating your opinion.
Play it on an SD TV then come back.[QUOTE="D4W1L4H"][QUOTE="hakanakumono"]
Your images are different because they're not an authentic representation of the game's visuals.

Let me be more frank. The pictures you posted are rendered by a PC, not a Wii. An SDTV will smooth out the visuals, but it wont make them look like that.
not to mention the native sized screen shots posted in this thread won't fit on the screen on my 1280x800 laptop so they're probably in 1080p which is 4x what the Wii can produce. sooooooo....this whole thread is a sham. totally misrepresenting the original product by showing it running on an emulator. fail fail fail.Witcher 2, Dark Souls, Bastion and Rayman look way more artistic and better and way way more detailed too
How come it's only considered artistic if it looks painted or drawn? I love the artistic direction in Arkham City it's far better than skyward flop.
I don't even think the game look as GOOD as those pics. Looks much worse in motion.I think use better picks those are pretty awful
musalala
Nope, the graphics are 16-bit at best. Swords look blocky and unrealistic. You should try running a game like DMC 4 in DX 10, then you will change your mind.At times it looks like a painting. Does anyone else think this has the best art of 2011?
Banjo_Kongfooie
Yes, the Skyward sword art was definatley my favourite this year. Though, your image choices are poor.

Skyward sword running on the pc looks nice and jaggy free but you can find plenty of free mmo's that look similar or much better graphically.
Tough one, Rayman Origins looks truly fantastic, but i just love that old painting look from Skyward Sword, man, this is a really tough one.
I wish people would stop passing off poor graphics as 'artistic'. Okami is artistic. Mad World is arguably artistic. Zelda...just has poor graphics.

Nop, the game has great graphics for a Wii Game...but hey what do i know, i only have the game and play it on my 42" TV with component cables so i wouldn't possible know i'm sure the guys who had never touched the game had more credibility.
Honestly Skyward Sword looks like crap. The Wii holds it back...sorry TCnightshade869Yeah you have to be delusional to think that Skyward Sword looks great especially when you consider what other games can do with current gen hardware. It's a shame Skyward Sword had to be on the Wii. With a real console the art style would have really flourished and come alive instead it's a jaggy last gen mess.
and I wouldnt call SW "artystical". Its more like it looks like that because its a wii game...wind waker was artistical, SW isnt.lightleggyPretty sure that's not a real word.
[QUOTE="lightleggy"]and I wouldnt call SW "artystical". Its more like it looks like that because its a wii game...wind waker was artistical, SW isnt.Bread_or_DecidePretty sure that's not a real word. typo, you gonna cry about that?
its definitely up there. the art direction ties so well into the gameplay. nintendo made a game about perpetual change and the visuals complement that. ashes dance around in a volcano areas with other small touches for the minutia and different hues of color break down the broader strokes. its a shame that it will be dismissed as cutesy or cartoony.
the other one is dark souls. its easy to just say "lets add more guts to this level" when youre trying to make something look grotesque, but FS has a lighter touch even if you dont feel it as such (although they dont shy away from graphic material as it certainly fits their game). like theres this gruesome spider enemy and ive sure weve all played a game with on of those. however, FS adds erotic symbols for contrast and its a much more jarring experience for it. this art direction also works within the gameplay. it can seem contradictory to have a game that puts on a tough face but really just helps the player along for every step of the way and thats avoided in dark souls.

You can say it looks great and all that, and no one can disprove that, because it's subjective. But one thing most people can perceive is that a 5 year old Twilight Princess looks better. That's like if Skyrim looks worse than Oblivion, and then someone came along and said Skyrim looks great. No one can say his opinion is false, but it doesn't fly.
Rayman Origins would like to have a word with you. And Sonic Generations and LBP 2 also.TheGuardian03
I agree with sonic generations. The demo looked gorgeous for me andsome stages like planet wisp look awesome from what I have seen from youtube videos.

Yeah......sure
I seriously need to try this game on my Wii. I doubt it would look anything like that on my HDTV.Literally no game on my Wii looks like that on my upstairs HDTV.I do see jaggies on all my Wii games, but that's it.
lol youre going to say "rayman origins" art sty|e has been done before and not SS?
im not impressed at all with the SS art sty|e. its pretty phoned in, really.
i would personally pick LBP2. there is a ****ing artistic game

Some parts of the game from what I seen from pics and youtube videos looks incredible while the other parts look okay.

Meh I think Arkham City, Dark Souls, Dead Space, Assassin's Creed etc all have better art direction on top of the obv much better technical graphics. There's nothing appealing to me about the way the new Zelda looks and it makes me a bit sad.
Nice PC you have there.... Where are the jaggies? Nice filters also.... And no is not so artistic as you sound of... Is a Zelda WW spinoff. This doesnt mean is a bad artistic game but hey...weve seen it before more or less... 10 years ago...Too me it is between that and Rayman but Rayman's dirrection while looking good has been done before.
