[QUOTE="princeofshapeir"] Why did you label those games as Canadian? Is Canada not part of the West now? princeofshapeir

Part of the west, yes.... part of the "US OF A".... NO.... thank GOD!

The West isn't just the USA... And we could do without your incredible ignorance.

He was just pointing out that not all of those games were made in the US. The TC said FF13 can't comapare to the games from the US.

[QUOTE="games_soul"]

It depends on why you play RPGs. If you want unlimited freedom and customization options, u go for WRPG. If you want a focused story with emphasis on character development then JRPGs are the best. I hate WRPGs personally, they are devoid of emotions and very soulless. JRPGs mostly have great music as well that contributes to a lot of the emotions in the game. So saying WRPGs is better is meaningless because the two genres are VERY different and appeal to different people

Yandere

It matters what type of JRPG you play also, a lot of tactical rpgs are rich in customization.. Leveling up to 9999, being able to restart back to 1 to get higher stats, raise your items level, raise your spells level, raise your special attacks level, raise how powerful your special attack is, raise how strong the monsters your fighting are, restart from level one and choose a different version of the same class for higher stats, etc. (all examples from Disgaea)

I agree, there is variation from one JRPG to another (mostly divided to JRPG orSRPG, with the latter having more focus on customization). anyway, I enjoy Japanese art style and music, as well as character deptha lot more. I tried playing several WRPGs and never liked any of them (Oblivion, Mass Effect, Bauldar's Gate, some others that I can't remember now),I just feel empty playing them, nothing wrong with them but I just loath them with a passion based on my own preferences.

from your opinion and the games you listed i can see you are a new gamer and missed the old good jrpg days, snes jrpgs were great but the era when the jrpg genre was at its prime was psx .games like :

breath of fire 3/4

legend of dragoon

final fantasy 7/8/9/tactics

suikoden 1/2

vandal hearts 1/2

saga frontier 1/2

grandia

revelations persona

alundra(why dont they make a new alundra ?it was awesome)

vagrant story(in an gen that it was squaresoft and the other than ff titles were amazing games too)

wild arms

lunar

xenogears

legend of mana

legend of legaia

megaman legends(crapcom want a new megaman legends game nowwwwwww and a new breath of fire.stop all the shooter craze)

parasite eve 1/2

tales of destiny

ogre battle

and those are my jrpgs i owned in the psx gen, damn it was a good time, and it proves that jrpgs then were awesome and trust me if you were gaming then you would love them too.then you could choose jrpgs like now you can choose shooters .......i blame goldeneye and halo for that....fps should have stayed in pc where they play the best (controlls and graphics)

Games like

Kotor 1-2

Mass Effect

Oblivion

Fallout 1-2-3

Baulders Gate

World Of Warcraft

And new games Like

Mass Effect 2

Alpha Protocol

Dragon Age

Fallout Vegas

Deus Ex 3:shock:

Honestly jRPG's have been far supassed years ago. I do agree that FF is the best that Japan has to offer and yes FF13 looks pretty sweet. It's still small potatoes to what the good ol US OF A puts out these days.

The amount of bad scores for Jrpg's is much worse then WRPG's

You can still find a lot of rpgs, they are very niche though - A LOT more if you learn Japanese also.

The TC's list wasn't great, but I'll agree that I prefer (W)RPGs.

It's still comparing apples to oranges, though - the two genres may have been similar two decades ago, but they're two different beasts nowadays.

Oh come on, I haven't played it but Valkyria Chronicles can't be *that* bad. :P

I've spent over a hundred hours with each of those three^ games, and I wouldn't call any of them great RPGs (F3's alright, WoW is generally dull, and Oblivion is bad). If you want to compare, why not bring up the RPG greats, like Planescape Torment, Fallout 1/2, BG2 or Ultima 7?

I agree 100%, i cant get into most JRPGS because the art style is usually to out there for me to enjoy, example being almost every final fantasy game(XIII seems to be a bit toned down so i might be able to get into it). Most recent JRPG that i actually cant wait to play is demon souls and thats about it. WRPGS are just more accessible for me, artstyle, gameplay, characters, story, it all is just more for me. So its not that JRPGS suck or are of bad quality, its just i cant connect to them or i find the combat boring(most turn based combat is just trash imo)

Oblivion is my favourite Rpg of all time. and why would you spend hundreds of hours on rpgs that you dont even consider great. Valkyria chronicles is a great game but its not even open world.

I spent 400 or so hours on Oblivion and it's still not the best RPG I've played. Plus, a tactical game is really hard to put into a open world - nor is it needed.

It's a matter of opinion. You're no better than anyone else because you prefer WRPGs, or vice versa. You're not going to change anyone's opinion with this thread, I don't see the point in it. For example, you haven't changed my mind. IMO, JRPGS >>> WRPGS. Final Fantasy, Tales, Kingdom Hearts are some of my all time favourite games.

I like them equally both.

I am however more optimistic about the future of JRPGs than WRPGs. JRPGs are getting a little stagnant but there are always game that pushes the genre forward like Persona, The World Ends With You, Devil Survivor, Valkyria Chronicles. The JRPG genre is slowly getting better and better all the time. The WRPG genre however is going backwards. Take Mass Effect, Fallout 3, Oblivion. All these games are constantly attacked by people that claim they can't touch the masterpieces that is Fallout 1, 2, Morrowind and Baldur's Gate 1 and 2.

All the fans of WRPGs that seems to enjoy bashing JRPGs and calling the games not "true" RPGs have somehow missed the fact that WRPG has slowly gone down that way too and turned the WRPG genre into an shooter or action-RPG mix. The golden age or "true" WRPG is over and ended after the 1990's but the golden age of action-WRPGs is just beginning.

I play every high quality WRPG and JRPG that I have time for though and enjoy the genres more than ever.

JRPGs bore me to death. The only one I've enjoyed was Septerra Core and that isn't even really Japanese. Oh and Princess Maker 2.

I love WRPGs.

I hate new "action-RPGs".

Oblivion and Fallout 3 are horrible wrpgs. TC - you bring shame to RPG fans! lol

TES1-3(Morrowind etc.)and Fallout 1 & 2 though are awesome! Of course I like Jrpgs too!

Yes, it's quite good. I would also recommend planescape:Torment.

Yea but those games don't hold any interest for me, JRPGs do.

Pun was intended regarding the wrong spelling in the OP's first post. I actually already played Baldur's Gate (and Planescape Torment) when they released. I think I played pretty much every Black Isle RPG back in the days. And yes they are awesome, but OT: whether someone prefers JRPG's or WRPG's is purely opinion.
