$200 HD DVD players + 7 free movies = lots of sales. player basically pays for itself with the free movies.
look out for the HD DVD push with $200 players are on sale at Circuit City, Best Buy and WalMar. Expect Target to follow suit.
Expect consumers to eat it up.
It isn't about your personal opinion on the movie, guys. Its about sales. Thats where this relates to games.
"relates to games?" you ask. Yes, the more popular blu-ray is, the more people want to buy a player, the more likely they are to buy a PS3, the more PS3 games are sold.
Its SYSTEM wars, not GAMING WARS. Like it or not, MY system has a next gen, high capacity disc player. It also acts as a media server (so does 360). These are SYSTEM (console) features. Like it or not.

You see HD-DVD beating blu-ray in sales, you let me know. I'm not holding my breath.
say what u want of spiderman 3, weather it was a good or bad movie but fact is that it will sell. sm3 will be the final nail in the already losing hd dvd format. Your friendly neighborhood spiderman saves sony. Blu ray, the official format of this gen and the next.virtuas

well said. i hate spiderman 3 after two great previous installment but this isnt about how good or bad the movie is. it's about sales and what it can do to sony as a whole.
If you ask me, Transformers was 10,000 times better than Spider Man 3. The only hi-def movie player I have is the PS3. I would trade all 3 Spider Man movies to the HD-DVD camp to get Transformers on blu-ray.

If you want to talk about sales, talk about the sales of software per capita. There are almost 6 million Blu-Ray capable devices in homes today, while struggling to outsell HD DVD by a 2:1 margain.
Consider there are something like 300,000 HD DVD players in homes.
That means: 20:1 is the ratio of Blu-Ray capable machines in homes to HD DVD capable machines...but software sales are only 2:1 or less? Hmm...
Also:
In a not-so-surprising turn, standalone HD DVD players have regained their lead on Blu-ray sales in September, giving the overall year-to-date figures (in which HD DVD has always been ahead) as 53% HD DVD, 44% Blu-ray, and 3% dual-format. Although this may give you the impression that HD DVD is in the lead, the numbers don't include the PS3, which dwarfs sales of standalone HD DVD and Blu-ray players by quite a large margin (based on June figures).hings are also interestingly murky over on Netflix. When looking at their published numbes, Blu-ray has about twice as many people looking at the category, but only about 1/3 as many choosing it as their preference. We're not sure exactly what's going on, but our theory is that PS3 owners who got a Blu-ray player as part of the bargain are only marginally interested in its features, which explains the increased overall views. HD DVD owners, who either bought a standalone player or an add-on for the 360, knew what they were getting into, and thus have a higher preference for the format.
Blu-Ray stand-alone machines (as in, players that aren't PS3's) continue to trail HD DVD stand alones. That margin will only increase this holiday season unless we see a $200 Blu-Ray player this holiday...which ain't happenin. Hell, most Blu-Ray owners now just kinda got the feature handed to them, so what will happen with those people is a big unknown. Many PS3 owners don't even know their systems play Blu-Ray or even know what it is (don't feel like looking for that link).
Even though I like Blu-Ray, I think I prefer HD DVD these days. The extras...the stable standardized format...the smooth menus...and the fact that the only place I can get Heroes, The Matrix Trilogy, Transformers and the Lord of The Rings trilogy, and the *best* version of 300 (PIP feature is freggin awesome!) are enough reasons to have an HD DVD player.
Especially at $200. The freebies pay for the player.

QFT....transformers is better
Well that's obvious, but the thread isn't about which movie is better so you're arguing the wrong point. It's simply supposing that Spider Man 3 will result in lots of Blu-Ray player sales.
It will not.
It may sell a decent number of DVDs...and a decent number of Blu-Ray discs...but how well that movie will perform in the home video market (now that people saw it and weren't impressed) will be interesting to see.
why is that people who think this movie is so bad live on the internet...it was a great movie but people are never satisfied with what they get or pissy venom fanboys...it was a notch below two but greater then one...blazinpuertoroc
Everyone has their own opinion. I didn't find anything about it impressive. I won't be buying it, but I might rent it because my girlfriend might like to see it (she has yet to).

why would u buy a stand alone player if u can buy a ps3 for the same price. it doesnt make any sense. anyone with a brain would consider ps3 over any standalone because of the fact that the player delivers the same high quality picture and plus the ps3 can also play games. why not buy something for the same price can could play high def movies and games. why limit urself. i bought my ps3 because of the ability to play hi def and games. the ppl that bought ps3 arent just gamers, they are also tech junkies.

jason1690
Like I said, it'll be interesting to see what Warner has to say when their Blu-Ray contract expires. Is the consistant 2:1 sales advantage impressive enough, or does the lack of a larger advantage in the face of a 20:1 blu-ray player to hd dvd player in the market make them nervous? Will the lack of TOTAL sales result in them losing faith in HD DVD's chances of ever catching Blu-Ray? Will HD-DVD make a serious move this Fall? What kind of negotiations have been going on at Warner the last few weeks as their Blu-Ray contract grew closer and closer to expiring?
They *know* HD DVD owners are buying movies...but the Blu-ray base is an enigma; most got the player by trojan horse (player simply came with the game system they wanted) and are not using that feature at all. Meanwhile, stand-alone players continue to be dominated by HD DVD and will continue to as the $200 HD DVD player becomes sublime across US big-box stores.

You can get into this stand-alone/console debate on your own. It doesn't matter. The final sales do.
Blu-ray Disc titles began outselling HD DVD titles early in the year and have consistently maintained an edge, week after week. Even Paramount Home Entertainment's release of the DreamWorks theatrical blockbuster Transformers exclusively on the HD DVD format didn't tip the scale last week. Though there was no hot new Blu-ray Disc release, consumers continued to buy more Blu-ray Discs than HD DVDs for the week ended Oct. 21, albeit by a slim 51% to 49% edge. Paramount says Transformers sold 190,000 units its first week in stores, but Home Media Magazine market research and studio estimates puts the actual number of units that sold through to consumers closer to 115,000.
Writer quoted on N4G
"The stable and standardized format"?????? Are you saying blu-ray is not that?
And to name titles as your main argument is very trivial. thats YOUR opnion, dude. That says nothing about sales. While I agree that those titles are both good and sell good, they are obviously not enough to overcome blu-ray's selections.
And you don't think blu-ray can do PIP???

Pr0n is already on HD DVD. But it doesn't matter like it did in the VHS-Beta era. In fact, it wasn't the only deciding factor in that war. Beta looked better but could only hold an hour or so of content. VHS was cheap and flexible.
As for teh Pr0n, many simply get that for free on the internet. It doesn't have the weight that it once did.

Smaller than thinpak cases? I don't think so.And as for hardcoats, DVDs and HD-DVDs can have hardcoats, too (there are hardcoat DVD+Rs available). They're just not as necessary because their coats are thicker.

if HD-DVD fans don't think Blu-ray software sales are "dominating" HD-DVD by a 2 to 1 margin, i dont see how HD-DVD fans can think HD-DVD is dominating the stand-alone hardware market over Blu-ray by a 1.2 to 1 margin. Honestly, at the price[-point advantage that HD-DVD has had over blu-ray all this time, i personally think there would have been a larger margin instead of blu-ray being that close.

Those that bought a 360 or ps3 are enjying the advantage of Hidef, while people like myself that love movies, bought both formats. Why buy one and not the other? If you can afford the TV, the PS3 and the bluray, then you can afford an xbox and HDDVD drive. That makes a 'format war' pointless.HuusAsking
with SM3 which is already out and pirates coming out soon, blu ray is this gen format. u argue now that its not going to replace dvd but think back 8 yrs ago when most tech geeks and consumers said that dvd will never replace vcr cuz it was expensive, cant record, cant copy, blah blah blah. same thing will happen, dvd will decline because more ppl will buy HDTV and eventually will want a high def player(blu ray player). because of higher quality and sound. Cost will do down, picture quality will get better, best of all its very durable. With movies like spiderman 3 and pirates leading the way , this will boast the popularity of bluray movies thus making it the stardard format for movies and videogames.
What woke people up to DVDs were several notable and practical features.Name me one practical feature any of the HD formats have over regular DVD.
6x the quality of regular dvd. i guess thats ONE. i win
Spider-Man 3 is trash. It had the biggest opening of the three movies, yet the lowest overall gross and fastest drop. Pathetic. Transformers came in only $18 million behind SM3, and will probably be even bigger than SM3 in DVD and HD-DVD sales because it's a better movie.mjarantilla
didnt sm3 get 600+mill budd?
[QUOTE="Dreams-Visions"]Blu-Ray stand-alone machines (as in, players that aren't PS3's) continue to trail HD DVD stand alones. That margin will only increase this holiday season unless we see a $200 Blu-Ray player this holiday...which ain't happenin.

1.) You're not familiar with the Blu-Ray profile 1.1 or 2.0 are you? The fact that early players will at bare minimum not be able to use some features...and depending on how it works out, 1.0 players that can't upgrade (firmware or software) will simply not be able to play new movies at all.
best I could find quickly:
http://www.digital-digest.com/blog/DVDGuy/2007/09/29/blu-ray-buyer-beware/
Some features will simply not work because they require more memory than 1.0 players were required to have, for example. This is an issue HD DVD does not and will not have, because the HD DVD group had their standards set from the launch of the first player in 2005.
If you think that's a "trivial" issue, you should visit AVSForums. So NO, Blu-Ray is not a stable, stanardized format. If you knew anything at all about profile 1.1, profile 2.0 or what those terms mean, you'd know that. It's the biggest problem Blu-Ray has, IMO.
I look forward to you margianalizing this issue to make it look not as serious as it is. :)
2.) Titles were not my main argument other than to suggest that those exclusives COUPLED with $200 players can and will be used to sell players. $200 is the magic number for many. HD DVD got there. Sales will reflect that. Not that Blu-Ray stand-alone players ever caught HD DVD in the first place...
3.) Blu-Ray's "selection" has not helped it pass HD DVD in stand-alone player sales. Fact. Also, the reality is that most movies are available on both formats, though I buy some on both formats because I could really care less which wins as long as it has a rich set of features.
4.) Did I say Blu-Ray was incapable of PiP? Or did I say that the HD DVD version of 300--which has PiP-- makes it the clearly superior version? It's an awesome feature. I watched it in awe. It'll be awhile before we see a Blu-Ray movie with PiP...but I never said it was incapable.
Spider-man 3 > Transformers[QUOTE="Pro_wrestler"]Transformers > Spiderman 3.hscream13
in DVDsales!
Transformers + HD DVD > Blu-ray + Spiderman 3 in terms of quality.
[QUOTE="gooch_sic"]Megan Fox > ugly @ss Kirsten Dunst
That alone makes Transformers > Spiderman 3
lol
