SMG is incredibly overrated.

I'm honestly baffled at how much praise SMG gets. I rented the game sometime in december of 07 and while I liked it, it did not deserve a 9.5 or GOTY.

Platforming elements were good and it was fun but it just didn't have the quality of a GOTY. How the heck did it get GOTY when games like CoD4 and Halo 3 came out?

The story was almost non-existant and collecting stars just got tedious after a while. Damn, what did I miss that you guys had so much fun with that you made you make outrageous claims such as "It deserved a 10 like mgs4 and gta4!"?

Because it's not a rock solid game, with great mechanics, great worlds to explore, tons of content to enjoy, and tons of verity... and does all of that not only well, but great.

It's supurb in everything it does. Even the story is great. It doesn't have to be complex to be great.

I won't disagree. Both have their share of faults for sure, but SMG is a very 9ish game IMO. It's solid and fun but is far from perfect. How the heck did it manage to get 97% on GR I will never understand.

What races did you have to do? One of the best parts of games like SMG is that you don't have to do one star right after another...

Not to mention that there were races in SM64 and SMS... But at least in SMG they aren't the same thing every time... and are a little original.

why do people think that 10 still means PERFECT with no flaws espeacially because this site goes by .5 scoring now so all a 10 means is above a 9.5 theres no middle ground anymore. also to me those games went way above and beyond all of its previous installments, where as smg i just still liked mario 64 and even though many (ok everyone) will disagree i liked many elements and the overall direction of sunshine over galaxy so whatever its my opinion but i think all three of the games got the score they deserved

Games like Halo 3 and CoD4 are overrated. They don't do anything to distinguish themselves from their predecessors (Halo's forge/4 player Coop and CoD4's leveling system are not major improvements, especially when the latter can ultimately detract from the game, but that's due to it's poor matchmaking), nor do they do anything new for the genre.

A game doesn't need enough replay value to last you until the end of your life to be considered a great game. Too many people harp on multiplayer these days, sometimes to the extent that they forget what a great singleplayer experience is like. In the platforming genre, SMG does everything incredibly well and combines many gameplay elements as well as introduces new ones. SMG integrates the gravity into the core platforming gameplay so that it feels like it's a part of the game, unlike many "additions" (or gimmicks) that are apparent in many other games these days.

yeah seriously. Im so sick of the lack of focus on singleplayer. I want a good SP game that doesnt last 5 hours WHILE having a great multiplayer too.
