"This is bullshit!" - Jim Raynor

In the N64 era, Nintendo fans supported Acclaim (Turok), Lucasarts (various Star Wars games), and Rare (okay, the last one was technically a second party, but Nintendo only had like, lower than a half of shares of them, so they kind of count)

The GC era, they supported Namco (Soul Calibur II, Tales of Symphonia), Lucasarts (Rogue Squadron II), TT games (LEGO), Capcom (RE4), SEGA (Sonic series).

Wii? Well, SEGA (Sonic series), Activision (some CoD games, Guitar Hero III, Guitar Hero World Tour), TT games (LEGO), Capcom (RE4, Monster Hunter, and to an extent, TvsC), and Harmonix (Rock Band) all seem to have gotten hits on that console.

Capcom even has some decent selling games on the 3DS, ESPECIALLY Monster Hunter.

Sure almost none of those games (bar Rare on the N64) ever hit the top five, but to say Nintendo fans don't accept outsiders is absolute BS.

Put the game on ps4/pc/xbone Watch it become a top seller.

I expect the same fate for scale bound, being exclusive to the least popular nextgen system.

The original was on the PS3 and 360 and it sold poorly.

Bayonetta isn't a high school girl, chibi, or hentai or a rpg about high school kids. It was doomed from the start.

Having said that I preordered mine.

damn, Platinum Game losing streak continues, they can't seem to catch a break

Platinum already got paid for their work with Bayonetta 2. They don't give a shit

Not exactly; if their games keep bombing or under-performing, it's going to eventually turn publishers away from investing in distributing their games. That was already the case with this game, where Sega refused to publish it and Nintendo had to come to the rescue.

Except no one here knows what actually qualifies as under performing.

Critically they do fine, and have hit their incentives. Production wise, no one that has played a Platinum game can really be thinking those games are on some insane budget, if anything they are just a well managed mercenary studio at this point. As long as the quality of their games are good pubs will take chances on them, based purely on the fact that they know they are getting a good game. Meaning they just need to figure out how to market it, and plenty of publishers have enough hubris to think they can do it.

If Platinum was pulling some Square or Capcom shit this would be an issue, but in a lot of ways they've been a glorified indie dev.

Since the game was released on the Wii U, this is not surprising. At least we should be concerned over the game's quality than its sales.

And speaking of Bayonetta's popularity, several years back in a Famitsu poll, she was ranked in the Top 20 among popular video game characters in Japan. She does have an appeal among the Japanese.

I'm only basing this off of the first Bayonetta since apparently it didn't meet Sega's expectations. Yeah it's true that the bar varies publisher to publisher, but I can't imagine Nintendo investing in any more Platinum Games is Bayo2 underwhelms just like The Wonderful 101.

From what I hear it only had one day to rank. So those aren't a full weeks sales. That and the fact that Japanese sales figures tend to be small anyway. Wait for it to be out for a month and then compare it against other software released within the month.

SEGA is just a publisher though. Nintendo, like Microsoft, can afford to fund and release exclusive games they already know will probably bomb.

Why do they do this? As console makers it is their job to fill holes that their first party teams can't cover. Thats why MS is funding a Kamiya action exclusive game and why nintendo secured the sequel to Bayo2, brought Bayo1 to the Wii U, salvaged Devil's Third and keeps funding Fatal Frame games. They know these games by themselves won't move systems, but covering all genres with quality games help to slowly make their product more appealing.

Thats why when I hear people genuinely arguing in favor of nintendo going third party I can't help but laugh. You would be worse off as consumer if that happened as there would be NO need for them to go through the supermarket list of genres and checking the boxes with niche games like Sin and Punishment 2 or Bayonetta 2. Just look at how many IPs SEGA has dropped since they went third party.

Don't worry about Bayo2. It will be critically very well received. It will sell like shit. Nintendo already expected this but got their hit out of the deal that they themselves couldn't develop. Platinum moves on to their next contract.

If the Wii U at least stabilizes at a number where nintendo is more comfortable with it, don't be surprised if they fund Bayonetta 3 to keep that top of the line character-action feather on their cap. Thats what the Mario Kart 8s of the world are for, to balance the "financial loss" of the Bayonettas.

They keep saying "console gaming is dead in Japan", but then MK8 debuts in Japan with over 326k, Dragon Souls 2 with over 255k, Battlefield 4 (PS3) knocked off Pokemon from the #1 spot with over 122k, and even Watch Dogs debuted in Japan with over 60k.

And Destiny for the PS4 debuted with 91k.

No need to pin it on Japanese gamers for this one, or say "console gaming is dead" as if it explains everything (if it's dead, why do you keep opening these threads to look at the numbers every week?)

You need to use a more graduated language to describe the Japanese home console situation, not lazy and simple extremes. Bayo 2 didn't sell well and bombed. The game does not seem to provide enough value for the $60 they have to spend, when it looks like a 8-10 hour rental game with a dumb, worthless story (which the reviewers even admitted it to having). Japanese gamers, just like every other gamer, want those $60 games to last longer. That's why MK8, BF4, Destiny and even Watch Dogs did so much better.

What I'd like to see "dead" are the weak excuses trying to cover Nintendo's dopey ass in every thread. They dun goofed up, so just say it for once, jeez

Meh, I really don't think anyone halfway reasonable actually expected this game to do all that well. It's a niche game from a niche developer, and its predecessor, selling to an audience of over 40 million, couldn't achieve even 2 million worldwide, so it was highly unlikely that this was ever going to set sales records.

WiiU people just want Mario etc. Otherwise they'd get a ps4/one right? Sad to hear it though, maybe they'll port it after poor sales to cash some profit. I'd get it day one.

One thing that i'm genuinely curious about is if Platinum would get away with self-publishing Bayonetta 2 as a digital download on PS4 and PC. Maybe even Xbox One with Scalebound being a thing.

I think they might care about their game selling. Keep in mind this is platinum games, they don't have 200 million dollar budgets. They make their money back with modest sales.

This is exactly right, I mean sure the sales of Bayonetta 2 might not impact their paycheck in the short term, but in the long term piss poor sales mean less demand for another title. Unless Ninty continue to pay them to make games that dont sell, which may well be the case, but its not something that can continue indefinitely...shame really.

Personally I wasnt a huge fan of the first game, fun for a brief moment but zero replayability and the humour....meh. Charmless after a half hour.

I don't think the point of Nintendo taking charge of Bayonetta 2 was ever to make it a massive commercial success. Would they have liked that? Sure. (Of course.) But I think of Bayonetta 2 much in the same way HBO views a lot of its television shows: Its purpose is to generate acclaim and buzz -- for Nintendo to be able to say strong content is associated with the brand. That's always been something Nintendo's been able to boast about, and Bayonetta brings more bragging rights to the table while appealing to a different audience this time -- a hardcore audience. So, my bet here, is that even though 39,000 isn't a big number, those 39,000 people are buyers Nintendo desperately wants to court. They're not the same folks who are purchasing Mario 3D World or Mario Kart 8, and that's of particular importance for Wii U's long-game.

Who honestly thought this game was gonna sell well? Did anyone? The only thing I care about is that the game actually exists, and so far the few reviews and hands on impressions show that this game is gonna be one of the best of the year.

@flashn00b: No. That is never gonna happen. Its Segas IP, but nintendo paid for the assets that went onto making that particular game.

Goes without saying that Platinum has jack shit to say on this matter.

Nintendo fans don't support outsiders. They are insular, one dimensional and don't appreciate other developers. We're constantly being told on here that Nintendo is all they need, that in some cases, Nintendo is better than all the other developers combined.

And this is the result. You get very few games and the ones that do come on don't do well.

LOL You have no idea how Japan is very insular and one dimensional and doesn't appreciate foreign games. Japan becoming irrelevant is the result.

Like a lot of Platinum's games, I doubt they'll have to sell many to turn a profit. Will be interesting to see if it even makes it to 1 mil worldwide, or if they and Nintendo even care.

?... The only thing that's a surprise is that there is another Bayonetta.

Gamers need to understand that sales matter more than anything... Bayonetta sold struggled to break 2 million sales total, Borderlands was pushing 6 million on consoles alone and it was from a studio that up until that point was failing. God of War 3 sold 4 million and its exclusive.

Nintendo getting a exclusive for a game that struggled to sell 2 million on 360 and PS3 total... On the Wii U?... Sounds like a recipe for success?!.

Bayonetta 2 is the strangest choice for a Wii U exclusive game. Why? Like, why Bayonetta? Why the sequel? I don't get it. Never understood this marketing move. No one cares about this game enough to buy a Wii U... and Wii U owners don't care about this game.

Jesus, Bayo 1 sold more on the Xbox 360 in Japan with a muchsmaller install base than the Wii U.
