So now that NPD isnt going to release hardware data anymore personaly, what now?

that could potentialy take away some big ammo to these stupid fanboy wars we keep having here. no longer can I expect to see the Hardware sales every month from NPD and grab a bowl of popcorn and watch the madness. Now, we have to rely on SONY, MS, and Nintendo to rlease them, or we have to go by VG chartz innacuracys or other Reports. Personaly, I think this is a good thing. It should curt back on some of the stupidity here if these numbers arent released regualrly and the onyl time well here anything is when something big happens on terms of sales, and well here it from the company themselves. So yea, itll be dissapointing, but I think this is a good thing.

maybe this is sarcasm? but what is there to argue in terms of sales (other than predictions which are also opinions)? You can at least argue about your opinion and other peoples opinions in regards to reviews/games. With factual information there's nothing to argue about - it's just how it is.

im jsut releved that we dont have to put up with select fanboys on these boards that will not be named touting this kinda crap on a monthly basis.

NPD weren't great numbers for arguing monthly hardware anyhow, unless you had a very narrow viewpoint of the world :P

Now we'll go to quarterly reports, which were the only accurate, all encompassing numbers to begin with. People used to be floored how off their "projections" were when trying to use NPD to estimate WW sales. Now they won't have to be surprised.

In fact, isn't it getting close to quarterly report time?

I think I read somewhere that now people can pay a "subscription" to see the individual sales numbers. If that's true, wouldn't someone just pay a subscription and then post the sales numbers on here? It doesn't really seem to me that this will matter much. Though I guess companies could lie and say more people bought their game in an attempt to boost sales. I wouldn't trust Activision or EA to provide me with accurate sales numbers.

that subscription ahs been around for forever. It is used by Analysts likeMicheal Pachter, but im pretty srue anyone can get it if they pay for it.

I really don't dislike VgChartz. I know some of their numbers have been proven false before, but if you'll recall, SEGA called NPD out as being false not too long ago. The guys at VgChartz get actual data from actual retailers and extrapolate it based on certain factors (demographics, shipments, populations, etc). It's not a 100% exact science, but the people who claim VgChartz just makes things up are pretty delusional. VgChartz should be looked at for what it really is: a well-educated guess. I'm sick of people bashing those guys for no reason.savebattery

I don't pretend to know what/why/how VGChartz makes their guesses, but it simply isn't true that they are using the best data available, or feel any need to report accurately. Again, I'll simply point out the PS3 numbers, because most active SWarriors know the official tally between the 360 and PS3 as of the last quarterly report, ending June 30 and reported by each about 3 months ago now. Sony's financial statements put the PS3 install base at 38.1 million as of June 30th, and the 360 at 41.7. Those numbers were widely reported, known by anyone interested immediately, and represent the most accurate tally of hardware moved possible.

Here we are 3 nearly three months after that data was reported and closing in on four months since the actual cutoff dates, and VGChartz still hasn't gotten their PS3 data into sync with the actual numbers. In fact, their "best guess" of TODAY'S install base is still 100k lower than the actual total reported in July. The 360 numbers are now 2 million higher than the last quarterly report, and the PS3's haven't yet caught up. That shows absolutely no desire to adjust data to reflect the facts as they become available.

Mind you, I'm not preaching conspiracy, and I'm not claiming bias towards MS or anything. I simply find their data collection skills wanting, and their numbers therefore completely unreliable. Let's just stick with the quarterly reports and leave VGChartz out of this. The new reports should be along in the next week or two, so SW will have fresh ACCURATE numbers to sate them for awhile.

you guys are funny. you actually think sony would waist money on something like this? NPD group tried the same thing this time last year and it did not work (this was when Sony released the slim). hopefully they will change their minds

but isn't it strange that the NPD won't be releasing hardware data any more with the kinect right around the corner? the same ridiculous statement can be made about microsoft. how are we to tell if the kinect being sold out is 1 million, 100,000, or 10,000 units sold?
