So PS3 Has Now Surpassed 11 Million Units

not only has ps3 surpassed 11 million units sold it has done it in a much faster rate then the xbox 360. if you can remember back microsoft did not ship 11 million units of 360 until june of last year. now ps3 is only 6 million units behind the 360 and is on track to catch 360 in sales by years end. well microsofts spot at the top was nice while it lasted too bad even its second place title is about to be taken.

First of all, VGChartz FTL. These numbers are estimates and nothing more. The only reliable numbers are from the quarterly reports Sony releases.

Secondly, Microsoft had ~18 million consoles sold as of 1/1/2008. Maybe you should read the front page more often. They have obviously sold more units in the last 3 months.

Just to expand a little bit, Sony announced they shipped 10.49 million units as of December 31st. In the last 3 months sony has sold more than .5 million units in NA alone. I think it would be pretty safe to assume that Sony is much closer to 12 million units at this point.

360 sales are slowing dramatically and the PS3 is only getting MORE popular. Factor in that PS3 sold more in its first 12 months than 360 and its hard to deny how this competition will end.

Well they were 7 million behind in Jan. now Sony has cut that lead in only 3 months and there were no major exclusives released in the last few months of the year.

It seems the race for 2nd place is closer than I thought. I think the 360 will win, even though I like PS3 better.

Well vghcarts sold to consumer numbers are pretty spot on the retailer numbers that are released by Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft in that they are always the same number in part if you compare the sales. That is why I used them.

well, the PS3 did already outsell the 360 by more than a million units in 2008... and that's still with "no games" and in the slower months of the year...

I recall not too long ago that lemmings made a thread stating it was statistically impossible for the PS3 to pass the 360 this year. There was no possible way for it to happen, they said.

I don't know if it actually will or not. Especially with a rumoured 360 price drop coming soon. But if it DOES happen, I can't even imagine the forum carnage we will witness.

This feels like a long sprint...like the 400m. The runners start staggered because of the lane lengths not being equal. So the race starts and the people in the outside lane APPEAR to be winning for a while because they are ahead of everyone else. But with every turn of the track, the physical start distances disappear and the individual times become clearer.

It doesn't matter if the person is ahead for the first turn or two. Chances are, if someone is closing the gap, by the time you make that final turn, they will actually "magically" end up ahead.

Granted, anything can happen to change the outcome of the "race". But in the case of consoles, when the PS3 outsells the 360 world wide and the 360 is barely holding on to monthly NA sales which make up the majority of its total sales...then it is pretty disingenuous to act as if the "headstart" is all that matters.

But the thing that really amazes me is that Final Fantasy XIII(2nd biggest PS console seller), Metal Gear Solid 4 and Gran Turismo 5(biggest system seller on any console) isn't even out yet and the PS3 is doing very well. PS2 sold very well at launch with a horrid selection of games and a massive DRE problem.

Then that would make the 17.7 million in 23 months and the first 10 million was sold in the first 12 months because there was no new consoles on the market to compete against them. That would leave only 7.7 million in the rest of the months (with three holiday seasons behind it). If the 360 was such a strong system it should be closer to 30 million by now but instead it's barely over half that number.

They haven't lost market share at all. Wii owners are very different from PS2 owners and the vast majority of 360's are basically the same xbox fans from last gen.

People are waiting for the right price and a particular killer app.
