Have you ever wondered how it would feel to receive an achievement for defeating Ganon in the next Zelda game? Or a trophy for earning that last star in Super Mario Galaxy 2? Keep dreaming, as Nintendo seems pretty set on avoiding a meta-achievement system for its games.

Speaking toKotaku, Nintendo head of marketing Bill Trinen said that Nintendo is "not opposed to achievements," but he explained why the publisher has avoided using them for most of their games:

"When they create their games, [Nintendo's designers] don't tell you how to play their game in order to achieve some kind of mythical reward. Basically, the way the games are designed is they're designed for you to explore the game yourself and have this sense of discovery. To that end, I think that when you look specifically at games from EAD [the group long led by Mario and Donkey Kong creator Shigeru Miyamoto] and a lot of other games that Nintendo has developed as well, there are things you can do in the game that will result in some sort of reward or unexpected surprise. In my mind, that really encourages the sense of exploration rather than the sense of 'If I do that, I'm going to get some sort of artificial point or score that's going to make me feel better that I got this.' And that, to me, is I think more compelling."

While specific Nintendo games such as Wii Sports Resort and Super Smash Bros. Melee have in-game achievement systems, Trinen makes it sound unlikely that there will be any sort of system-wide achievements in place in the foreseeable future for Nintendo. Do you wish that would change?

http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2011/01/21/nintendo-explains-why-they-don-39-t-do-achievements.aspx

Thoughts? Personally, I think it's alright, nothing bad, that new star in SMG is always more satisfying than a Trophy anyday, IMO.

There is nothing stopping them from adding achievements after the game has been made.

Can Nintendo At Least have some sort of Gamer Card that shows us that we are a ClubNintendo Member and what status we are and what game we are playing?

Now seriously, the other day I was playing NSMBW with my friends and we got a star coin or something and I asked: "what happens if you get all of these coins?" and they told me "nothing, it's just a waste of time really".

I know they aren't even aware of achievements/trophies and I could clearly see they would've love some kind of reward for that effort.

i couldnt care less for trophies/achievements. if they leave them out then thats kewl. if they do decide to add them then thats also kewl. just give me the option to turn the prompt off telling me i have earned one (immersion breaker right there) and im happy. i dont need to be rewarded for playing games....playing the game is the reward in itself. if im not enjoying a game then achievements arent going to save it. if im really enjoying a game then achievements will make 0 difference to me enjoyment (unless theres that message....which is annoying).

Meh. I mean, I was incredibly disappointed when it was confirmed that the 3DS won't have any achievements, but frankly, it doesn't matter. He's right- achievements cause people (or me, at least) to obsessively play the game in a way so that the game stops being fun, and becomes more about bragging rights over something that doesn't even tangibly exist. It's pointless- and Nintendo games, which focus on the fun aspect more than anything else, should especially not be bogged down by stuff like that. Still, however, I think they should have implemented some sort of system for third parties to employ, even if it were optional.

Nah I think usually Nintendo gives you many unlockables. I guess it depends on the game and dev. Timesplitters 2 and Goldeneye had some awesome unlockables. So did perfect dark and Uncharted 2 does as well. I love it when you beat things and get stuff, not some points.

Dude I know, I wish we could get something like that, I mean I know it sounds stupid but I liked getting that cheezy poof popup when I do something cool or worked on something hard to get in a game.

Though most Achievements are like "You completed Chapter 1!" in which I go -_-

lol btw here's an old picture I made.

I really do not see his point, why not just put them in anyway? It's not like they will hinder peoples enjoyment or hinder game development for that matter. They're just being lazy on this one. Some people seem to be under the impression that achievements magically take away game content. Not really.

Findind some of the puzzles pieces in DKCR by myself was much more rewarding than my first Platinum Trophy, so i know what they are saying, hope Nintendo dosn't change this in his next console, Achievements/Trophies are just useless.

So make the achievements hidden, problem solved. What do I win? To be honest that explanation by Nintendo is obviously a smoke screen, I'm not bothered about cheevo's but their excuse is weak.

Because the Internet wouldn't give it away right? ;) I prefer the real rewards like new modes, maps, characters, difficulties, artwork, and so on.

Same here, I prefer setting my own goals over having someone set the goals for me. In addition, I do not like having to wait for the trophies to sync and I hate the achievement whores online insulting others or regarding themselves as superior simply because of achievements.

For me achievements/trophies comes with drawbacks but no benefits.

That is true. Yeah they definitely need more of this. Goldeneye has to be one of the most memorable ones. I would say Timesplitters 2 is up there for me as well with its awesome challenges :P. I loved throwing bricks through windows trying to break them all in a certain amount of time, or beating missions on a difficulty. Good times.

They don't substitue unlockables for trophies/achievements on the Ps3/360. It's pretty much up to the developers.

I find achievements really fun, making me go out of the way in a game and do something I would normally overlook. I dont see why Nintendo can not have both a trophy system and in game unlockables. I like being able to show others what I've accomplished and its a good way to have friendship rivalry.

Ingame stuff like artwork or harder mode or skinsis wortless to me since i never use or see them really. I enjoy getting trophies way more. I would have done all the secert stuff in TP if it had some trophy/achivment system in place. It doesint so I just dont really care. Also I like comparing trophies/achivments.

They're being quite ignorant on this one.. How are achievement points any more artificial than lets say a score you achieve in the game itself. There not.

Quite an interesting way of looking at it. Personally, I think they should have just done it anyway for people that wanted them. The idea of them in a sense just add to the game. Typically, they are totally unoriginal, easy, pointless, and not in the least bit of fun to get; That said, some games do 'em right. I think I had the most fun getting them in the first crackdown and in warhawk.

achievements are only fun if you have friends to compare them against online so i can see why they don't want the extra work of setting up a system for people to interact in that way.

That reasoning just doesn't add up. Trophies and achievements don't tell people how to play a game they "reward" players for doing something in a game.

Maybe the thing stopping them is that they see how worthless they are. In game rewards add actual replay value to games, but this achievement/trophy crap is like a blanket cop out for devs to not include them anymore.

Thoughts? Personally, I think it's alright, nothing bad, that new star in SMG is always more satisfying than a Trophy anyday, IMO.

that's no excuse. secret trophies/achievements exist that only reveal themselves after you've gotten them.

And what exactly is stopping Nintendo from doing both? Obviously its not worthless because a lot of gamers thrive on them.

A lot of Sony games have in game rewards in addition to trophies, but I've noticed a drop off in 3rd party games that do. Maybe that's what's stopping them, trying to avoid the same problem.

People still don't get Nintendo do they? Nintendo are master's at their craft, 25 years in and they're still make good game after good game (At least with their main franchises) and ever their 2nd tier stuff(Mario sports, party, min game collections) are still heralded as greatness. Nintendo is traditional, honorable and could care less about someone's showy pride in a video game. I am glad they stick to these guns, even in PS3 and 360 I don't care about achievements I explore the game, find stuff and if I get an achievement for it, I do so. I do it on Wii and I do it on PS3 and 360 without the motivation of the trophies and stuff, as I could care less about some lame honor amongst gamers, I prove it to myself, I play games for more than graphics, grandeur, applause and perks. I play them to beat them, for the story, and for the experience. Now maybe I'm old fashion at 21, but then again I couldn't possible care less that I do already.

We are not questing nintendos game making skills and bla bla bla. The excuse they give is just pure PR BS. I could see why they dont add one now since its to deep in this genaration. Im pretty sure they will add one for the next home console.

Achievements aren't bad when implemented well. I generally don't chase after them actively, but in multiplayer games they're a good way to progress and it's nice to unlock extra weapons and such in games like TF2.

A lot of achievements in SP games seem superfluous and stupid though, I tend not to bother with those.
