So, what's with Gamespot's love fest with RDR?

I don't even like RDR, but this is a bit annoying. Play the game first, and then share an opinion on it. At least if you hate it after you played it you actually you know...played the damn game.

There is a major difference between watching a game and playing a game.

I got the game a week ago and i can see why it gets all this praise. It's an awesome game the world feels alive and it doesnt get boring like GTA4 and the controls are actually good unlike GTA IV. Having played 12hrs of the game i can say that i'm not angry i got GOTY

It's the first western classic in the videogame medium. Now we're only 49 away from matching Hollywood :P (maybe 50 if you want to count the True Grit remake).

None of those deserving the word "classic", like RDR (going solely by critics and....everybody else).

Bah. "CIassic" has nothing to do with critical reception. What defines something that is "cIassic" is something that can be revisited 5, 10, 15, 25 and 50 years later, and still enjoyed. If five years from now, everyone can come back to RDR and have as much, or more fun when they did when it first came out, then it is on its way to becoming "cIassic." It has got at least another five years after that before it can be termed as such... and then another 40 until it is "true cIassic."

Do you see any other western game coming out that could dethrone RDR of the status it will recieve? You don't need to wait years down the road to know RDR will still leave the deepest impression on westerns (counting only videogames). You can certainly have your opinion about the game (I don't find it to be a 95, personally), but I don't seehow it won't fit into your definition of "****c", which is the correct definition I might add, given what it has already accomplished, reception-wise.

I wouldn't even consider RDR classic -- when looking a Classical Westerns, I think of a Western movie like My Darling Clementine, or basically any Western from 1930s to the end of the 1950s. RDR is more of a revisionist, like The Wild Bunch, The Searchers, or THe Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. Maybe even somewhat reflexive.

Classical Western =/= Western Classic. The first is categorizing as a sub genre within westerns, while the second is termed to recognize a western of highly regarded value. I'm not exactly sure how everyone else may term it, but I'll call The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly a classic because I find to be such an excellent film (one of my fav. movies actually :D ).

emorainbo

I haven't played it myself but from what I saw from a friend playing it its basically GTA 4:Wild West (which means it's at least a decent game, although I was never really all that big on sandbox games). So maybe GS are trying to make up for GTA:4 not winning GOTY 2008, or better yet thought it was the best game of 2010 .

RDR is different from GTAIV in almost every way. Strangely enough though, the stories are pretty much the same.

did you play the same games i did? i noticed one criminal being forced to hunt down his gang in one game, and one ex soldier seeking out personal revenge in the other...

I have no idea. I was bored with it from the start, honestly. It's like "oh, do this cattle-herding stuff for a while and then we'll let you get to the really neat stuff".

**** you Rockstar, I have better things to do.

Even when the game got going it was still an incredible bore. The combat was so easy as to be insulting (hurr durr, I durst lock-on to the bad guys), and the vast majority of the missions were the usual Rockstar bull ****,, i.e., go here, kill some dudez, listen to some insipid dialog whilst riding to your destination, etc.

There's nothing brilliant about it; it's the GTA formula copy-pasted to the west with some admittedly great graphics, but ****ing hell, what isn't pretty these days?

Rockstar has a good game in them somewhere, but they continually assume that everyone has the time and/or the desire to play through their overlong, filler-stuffed storylines, and I don't, I really don't, not when there's so many other games that offer so much more without asking for you to bend over and be ****ed by idiot tutorials and blatant padding missions.

People have so much trouble with a multiplat winning a platform's best game. Like a game being exclusive gives it some priviledge. I started RDR and love it.

I don't get how any rockstar games win awards. They all control terribly, which is sort of a no no when it comes to videogames. That's like giving a film of the year award to a movie that was shot out of focus.

I'm not sure myself. I thought it was probably one of the most poorly executed stories in a game... ever.

[QUOTE="ColdP1zza"]And trust me, RDR blows anything on the Wii or DS out of the water and I know because I own all of those consoles as well.foxhound_fox

Not SMG2 and DKCR. Not even by a long shot.

SMG2 doesn't even come close IMO, but I'm reasonable and I can understand how you could argue that, so that one may just come down to opinion, although there's no denying RDR blows it out of the water in terms of narrative and scale.

But DKC, really? The 8.5? The game that could have easily been passed off as a 1200MSP game on XBLA? The thing is, I'm not sure if you have played it, but if you have I don't even see how you could even think that. DKC is just a simple platformer, really nothing to special and nothing people are going to remember for long. RDR is simply amazing, and there's a reason why it sweeping so many awards and won so many GOTY's whereas no popular gaming sites are putting up DKC for even a nomination.

I can understand it possibly taking out GOTY but to me, when you look at best PS3 game and best 360 game it shoudln't be included in the list as I would look at the best platform awards to go to exclusives, as these are the best the console has to offer over the other consoles. But to have it win the best 360 and the best PS3 game, it is silly. But it is something certainly I would question any motivation. Great game, worthy GOTY winner but it shouldn't have been nominated for the platform awards. Some people would disagree as it should be the BEST game that is available on that platform. But to me, if it won best 360 and best PS3 what other game could have beaten it for GOTY. Reminds me of the Academy Awards when UP was the only animated film nominated for best picture, it assured it of winning best animation as people would questions why it was nominated for best picture when it wasn't the best animated. People would question how best PS3 and 360 didn't win GOTY. Anyway, that is my $24.50 worth.

I know they even stated the reason SMG2 got a ten was because the whole editorial staff thought it couldn't be improved with current technology.

Also SMG2 didn't have any negatives while RDR did in the review.

Yeah that happends when everybody votes for their personal favorite instead of the one game that truly deserves it, Kevin and Tom where a minority but they where right, and I think it was great of them to not show up in the goty video.

Forget about SMG1 ever existing, put the same game on PS3/360, swap whatever there is that makes it "Mario" with something identical and you have the game of the decade from every site. 90% of System Wars would have praised this game to death and calling it the Mario killer etc. It's the same game we are talking about here and the sad part is that all of this is true lol.

I wouldn't mind if they'd pick StarCraft 2 or maybe ME2 (haven't played this one) because those games can be justified a GOTY, Red Dead is a GTA clone in the desert. Story, atmosphere and such aspects that RDR captured well shouldn't matter in gaming as much as gameplay.

You quote the score it got on Gamespot. Clearly you have not played the game. It demolishes ever single 2D platformer this generation... by a long shot. Had you played it, you would realize this. And FYI, the main game takes an average of 15 hours to beat, and offers enough content after that to pad it out to at least 50... plus all the replaying you get from the awesome level design being just like the good old days of SMB3/SMW.

If you think DKCR is "just a simple platformer" you clearly have not played it, and have no idea about where the platformer genre standards lie at.

The level of polish in both games makes Rockstar wish they could make games as seemless and smooth as SMG2 and DKCR.

Also, I'd just like to mention something. Critical reception is not an empirical fact you can quote to "win" an argument. We are discussing opinions here, and I find it odd how you so easily jump to conclusions about a game you haven't played. Have you even played SMG2 even? For more than a few minutes? I think had you, you would be in my camp down-playing the amount of RDR's praise and be hoisting SMG2 and DKCR on petards.

First of all you haven't even played it. And trust me, RDR blows anything on the Wii or DS out of the water and I know because I own all of those consoles as well.

Here's the thing, you can't compare any Wii game to RDR because no Wii game comes close to the scale of Red Dead nor can any game on Wii even touch the narrative.

So IMO RDR most definately deserves all the awards its getting, and there's no mandatory mission that requires you to get beaver pelts, that's just one of the optional hunting challenges.

Nice opinion. I own a Wii, PS3, 360, DS, and a PC that maxes Crysis with 4x AA at 1050 res... and I still say Super Mario Galaxy 2 is the best game of the year, along with Starcraft II. The narrative in RDR is better than SMG2 but the gameplay is vastly inferior and not nearly as varied.

Funny how everyone automatically considers the act of viewing as inferior to playing. If a game doesn't entice me first by simply viewing it, it isn't exactly scoring points in its favor. On the matter of RDR, I haven't played it, but that's because I smell a GTA clone a mile away, no matter if they dress it up in a cowboy get-up and paint a right purdy picture of the old west behind it.

If you find all of R*'s games poorly made and boring why would you buy Red Dead Redemption?

I would think after

Bully

Grand Theft Auto 3

Grand Theft Auto Vice City

Grand Theft Auto San Andreas

Grand Theft Auto IV

and

Red Dead Revolver you would have learned your lesson. What made you buy the game? Is the answers reviews? Because all of their games get really amazing reviews.

Mo' money, no problems.

Money runs everything in this world - I wouldn't be surprised if MULTIPLE devs and publishers lined some peoples' pockets. It's the way the world works.

People still madabout ME2?

Without the story the game would be rubbish.

Mediocre graphics with repetetive shooting in levels designed practically as tunnels, with mediocre controls.

I liked it for a while, got boring in the Mexico area though. Multiplayer was pretty meh. Would never have given it GOTY.

[QUOTE="joel_c17"]its the only game i regretted buying this year. 100% over rated - i dont see why all gaming sites bend over and take it from rockstar. i find all their games really boring and poorly madeRyanShazam

If you find all of R*'s games poorly made and boring why would you buy Red Dead Redemption?

I would think after

Bully

Grand Theft Auto 3

Grand Theft Auto Vice City

Grand Theft Auto San Andreas

Grand Theft Auto IV

and

Red Dead Revolver you would have learned your lesson. What made you buy the game? Is the answers reviews? Because all of their games get really amazing reviews.

[QUOTE="ColdP1zza"]

RDR is simply amazing, and there's a reason why it sweeping so many awards and won so many GOTY's whereas no popular gaming sites are putting up DKC for even a nomination.

foxhound_fox

I own SMG2 and its good, but not even close to RDR. Also, you basically ignored everything I said and just clung to the fact that I don't think DKC is anything special.

You really shouldn't have said you hadn't played it, it just makes you look like an schmuck. If it's not your thing, that's fine, but at least play the game with an open mind and carve an opinion through experience rather than dismissing it straight away.

That said, RDR was a good game, but it shouldn't have sweeped the awards. I had to force myself to finish it, and that's never a good sign. On the contrary, I loved every moment of ME2. But hey, different strokes.

Agree completely. RDR was really a one and done.
