The Elder Scrolls

The Elder Scrolls is a series that is almost as divisive as it is legendary. Now on its fifth full installment, every single entry in the franchise has been met with rave reviews upon release, adored by fans to death and beyond, criticized for being a buggy mess, and panned for being a victim of its own ambition.

Perhaps nowhere is this more evident than within the series fanbase itself, which is possibly the most fractured fanbase for any franchise ever. Depending on who you talk to, every single Elder Scrolls game is both the best and the worst game ever created.

Funny, huh?

So anyway, I wanted to see what Elder Scrolls game System Wars thinks is the best and why... so folks... which Elder Scrolls game doyou think is the best one? VOTE and sound off!

Skyrim. They're all incredible games but Skyrim does a lot of things right. And it launched with few notable bugs, a first for Bethesda.

Skyrim is the best elder scrolls game i've played minus some problems like the interface. That said i still like Morrowind's world a lot better, i found it more immersive and interesting than oblivion or skyrim's.

so far I'm still likeing morrowind the best, between being able to mix and match every piece of armor along with wearing robes over armor, and letting you jump 1000 ft into the air with spells... it felt more flexible, and fun and more worth exploring useless types of spells just for the lulz. We may have a nicer leveling system with skyrim/oblivion and its pretty but... I don't know there are bits and pieces of Morrowind that just seemed better.

The combat in Fallout 3 and Skyrim is nothing alike so who knows. Watch some gameplay and reviews.

I think what he meant is when he casted the Warp spell the guy never shot the fireball at him. That happened to me. No matter where I stood and used it the guy just kept standing there.

Skyrim has no VATS as it isn't a Fallout game. As for combat, it's a lot more focused on close-quarters encounters and I feel it's a lot more exciting. The game also has a whole hell of a lot more things to do.

I haven't played Skyrim yet, but Morrowind was my favourite as it balanced the big scope of the previous ones, with the minute details seen in the latter ones, and had a unique fantasy setting to boot. It's actually one of my favourite games ever. Everyone's currently been saying Skyrim is the best Elder Scrolls yet. Can an ardent Elder Scrolls fan swear an honest opinion to me? I'm skeptical that this might just be the honeymoon phase, and the reality will crash down in a few months...

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind is one of the most imaginative games ever created and emphasizes true freedom in ways that Oblivion and Skyrim can't capture.

Oblvion's combat mechanics and fast-travel help make the game a bit more fun, but Morrowind is the true embodiment of the Scrolls games.

Fallout 3 is one of the worst RPGs ever made. Oblivion and Fallout: New Vegas are infinitely superior to that turd of a game.

More imagination, intricate quests, unique and varied world, great places to find and visit, great story, side quests have great stories within themselves, etc. For example, (trying to keep this spoiler free) i had this quest to kill a bandit leader, but when i got there it was not was i was expecting. I was expecting an Oblivion-esque "go kill the guy, fight his lackeys first, then mini-boss. But there was a story there, things got.....weird :P That is very Morrowind

Yes, from my experiences. Even if their back is turned they wont see you. Its not like Oblivion where they "sense" you stealing. Nor do they follow you around the house. Sometimes they just call the guard right away when u break in. You really feel like you are breaking in this time

I haven't played it yet, but I intend to as The Elder Scrolls is one of my favorite series.

But in Morrowind, I managed to doom my own world and made my own legend in it. Oblivion, and I'm sure Skyrim, will not allow you to doom your world. :P

It seems like a lot of people love Skyrim here. How is all the streamlining? Does it make it a better experience? Or is it simply the Nordic feel of the setting and all of the dragons that make it seem more badass?

I say it isnt so much streamlining as it is removing stuff that's utterly worthless and making a complex talent tree out of it in the process. Crap like athletics, hand to hand, acrobatics are gone, and so is picking stats like strength, luck, etc. instead, we have 18 skills with 15 perks each in a massive skill tree. You can really get a better suited character out of it. plus, the standing stones out in the wild offer more ways to customize your character. You can pick The Mage, The Warrior, or The Thief to start off and the others are all found in the wild....The Lady, for example, allows all skill types to advance faster, whereas a stone like The Thief allows stealth-type skills (Bows, sneak, onehanded, lockpick, etc.) to advance faster than others. It's a much better system for this type of open RPG, in my opinion.

Oh... so I can't jump my way across the entire game world like I did in old entries and still casually level up, huh? :P

I like the sound of it though. It sounds much more applicable to The Elder Scrolls than the previous method.

I havent noticed anywhere they have streamlined anything. They took everything from Oblivion and fixed it. The level scaling is more in line with New Vegas than anything else. There are some areas that you simply cant go until you level up. I encountered so powerful spirits while exploring that kicked my butt because my weapons were useless against them. Elemental effects have a greater impact than in Oblivion or Morrowind as well. Its simply better and more expanded i think.

I love New Vegas.... I hated Fallout 3, but if Skyrim is like New Vegas I'll be in Heaven.

The idea of not going places until you level up is crucial so I'm glad to hear that that's a part of the game now.

Morrowind>Daggerfall>Skyrim>Oblivion>Arena.

Morrowind was the perfect compromise between the unforgiving cRPG nature of Daggerfall and the mainstream, streamlined appeal of Oblivion/Skyrim.

I'm thinking Skyrim right now. It used to be Morrowind without even a doubt in my mind, but Skyrim does a lot right. I think the skill set up is for the better, and at first I thought I was going to end up being a jack of all trades, anything goes type of character but now that I'm in the 20s levelling up is harder, and picking my perks is more crucial to my play style. I also love that the game doesn't blatantly level up with you, and that there are areas you shouldn't go to until you're tougher. It makes the world feel more alive. I was exploring the map and came across some vampires, and I wish I hadn't. Didn't even stand a chance.

I also have to say the dragons work wonderfully. I was just taking on a group of bandits holed up in a fort, and a dragon showed up and things got really chaotic. Then, much to my amusement other things started attacking it out of the forest and eventually we wound up in a small town. The dragon then perched on a building and started burning people alive. It was well done and a completely random experience that just worked, so much to the point where I'm rambling about it.

Skyrim. They're all incredible games but Skyrim does a lot of things right. And it launched with few notable bugs, a first for Bethesda.

simple question for those who have been playing. Is the leveling system like oblivion where every single enemy basicly levels up with you? I just want to know since I hated that system.

Its more like New Vegas. There is some scaling naturally, but there are also levels that you cant visit because of ur level. Like some caves have bigger ememies regardless of ur level so you have to get ur level up. Its not like oblivion where every enemy in the world levels up

Morrowind wins for me simply because you have so much freedom in everything. Enchanting and spell creation are leagues better in Morrowind than in Oblivion or Skyrim. There are several shortcuts and backdoors to the main quest if you're thorough enough to find them. There are also many more spell types in Morrowind, such as spells that let you leap over mountains in a single jump and spells that let you levitate (which can be used to either get to otherwise inaccessible areas, to fly quickly from one place to another, or to use as a way to make enemies float helplessly in the air). The only reason people hate it is because they get hung up on the D&D dice roll combat, especially at the beginning where if you didn't make your character just right you'll wind up missing nearly all of your strikes with a weapon and fail casting nearly all of your spells. For me it goes: Morrowind > Skyrim (close second) > Daggerfall > Arena >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Oblivion
