By far Skyrim. I started with Oblivion and that game stole countless days of my life. To warm up for Skyrim I purchased Morrowind off of Steam and used the overhaul mod to really make it shine. But Morrowind, is without a doubt, the worst ES game of the three. The game basically dared me to have fun, constantly trying to make me not enjoy myself. I found the world drab and uninteresting; I liked Oblivion's world much better, and Skyrim's is the best.. I levelled up a few times, and completely lost interest. Good riddance to that mess of a game. I will honestly never know what the fans of Morrowind see in that game.

Too early to tell I think many (myself included) are still in the "honeymoon phase" when it comes to Skyrim but with that said it's one of the best in the series for sure.

Daggerfall>Morrowind>garbage>Skyrim>Oblivoius

Daggerfall: One of the biggest gaming worlds, at a large amount of skills, buggy, but grand. Diseases can kill you.
Morrowind: Best story in the series. Also the most fun world to explore. With an excellent atmosphere and tons of INTERESTING content.
Skyrim: Godawful UI, terrible optimization, awful console port all around, combat sucks except for magic, they made dragons boring, terribad writing, Dovahkiin is the biggest idiot I have ever seen, bland environments, stupidly designed perks, skills feeling pointless, boring level design with dungeons being nothing but big corridors. However, it is still relatively enjoyable, but not because it is a good game. Skyrim is so bad that it becomes good. About the dungeons. I think you are suffering from a severe case of nostalgia. Here's what Daggerfall dungeons look like. In Dagerfall and Morrowind they are absolutely featureless corridors meeting at right angles. The dungeons in Skyrim are the best by far, I was actually surprised by their variety and design. Some are better than others of course, the first one in the main quest was probably the best I've seen so far ...

They're more visually varied in Skyrim but they're extremely linear hack and slash sessions in that game. You go from point A to B killing everything in sight most of the time and then conveniately get presented with a shortcut back to the surface. In Daggerfall there were multiple routes and tactics used to traverse them (like leaving 'breadcrumbs'). And the dungeon sounds and atmosphere was by far the most unnerving in the series, it was damn scary and claustrophobic being in them, running into an ancient lich and having it chase you through the halls is heart attack inducing.

Skyrim is the best elder scrolls game i've played minus some problems like the interface. That said i still like Morrowind's world a lot better, i found it more immersive and interesting than oblivion or skyrim's.

ferret-gamer

This, yeah Morrowind had a better world. But Skyrim fixed almost all the problems that Oblivion had, except for maybe level scaling? I can't completely tell if it does have level scaling but I'm leaning towards yes so far. However, it is the best ES game made right now.

Skyrim is the best one. Followed by Oblivion. The rest simply unplayable.

glez13

No, Oblivion was one of the worst ones.

Morrowind>Daggerfall>Skyrim>Oblivion>Arena.

Morrowind was the perfect compromise between the unforgiving cRPG nature of Daggerfall and the mainstream, streamlined appeal of Oblivion/Skyrim.

This. The thing is that most people will say skyrim now... And in a few weeks people will start to notice lots of problems with the game. Not saying Skyrim is a bad game hell its better then oblivion. But its not the "future" of gaming or the super awesome game of doom. It have lots of problems and some of the major ones are the lack of unique models / objects and textures making exploring abit pointless as most areas look overall the same and the textures suck on PC :(. Overall i dont like the dumbing down of the game, ui, skills / stats system and well how horribly bad the magic system is.

My main issue with the combat is that there is a complete lack of dodge or roll, meaning that melee contests turn into a 'who has the most health' battle, rather than who has the most skill.

Not with all enemies, but a lot of them yes. The giants for instance you can fight melee style and not get hit once(if you do, you're basically dead). Also, you can strafe around the dragons pretty well too.

You can't even comment on Morrowind's environments until you actually get invested in the game. Cities made from the husks of giant land crabs, giant mushroom villages, Native America-esque tribes, Dwemer ruins, a goddamn volcano, badlands blasted by sandstorms. Oblivion's world is the definition of uninteresting. Might as well call it Forests n Forts: The Game.

For Daggerfall, i'm waiting on the XL engine (basically a fuse between the DaggerXL and another one) to be finished, its a source port that'll make the game vastly enhanced with better graphics, and make it fully playable on any OS, it's still in alpha at the moment. Wen that's finished i'm going to play this game, i heard the dungeons were incredibly vast.

Morrowind + the Brrorowind overhaul was fantastic, i didn't mind the combat. It has the most unique world, and the best lore in the series, by far. Still gotta get some free time on my hands to play around with Oblivion some more and find some recommended mods to make it perfect..

Or wait a couple of weeks to let the Skyrim hype machine die down and make apparent game design flaws which were previously drowned out in a sea of anticipation and gushing fanboys. I still remember when people said Oblivion was the greatest RPG of all time.

Still people that think that now, though Oblivion was bashed to kingdom come since it was released in 2006 by a lot of Morrowind and RPGs fans in general. Mostly because there were a ton of stuff Todd hyped that weren't seen in the vanilla product, aswell as the AI being piss. I barely see any negative reactions from fans with Skyrim, i don't think it's gonna be the same deal.

There's already people complaining on the Bethesda forums about missing features and items, but yeah people have been accustomed to this type of game design with Fallout 3, NV and Oblivion, so the backlash won't be as bad. Still, hype can change someones perception, Oblivion bashing didn't really start until a few months after release.

By "nostalgia" I meant "remembering the past."

People forget about nostalgia when the newest shiny thing is in front of them.

Case in point: Modern Warfare 3. People completely forget about Modern Warfare 1 and buy the third installment...until nostalgia kicks in and then Modern Warfare 1 becomes a masterpiece again.

Sorry for misleading you...I've always loved Morrowind.

I didnt play Daggerfall until some time after Fallout 3. So I doubt Nostalgia has anything to do with it.

Skyrim is the very definition of linear dungeons. Heck calling them dungeons would be an insult to the term dungeon. So I will just call them corridors.

Corridors in skyrim are as linear as CoD. And they drag on and on and on. Pitting you against the same enemies while occationally even up the game with poorly designed "puzzles". It is like the devs put no thought into designing them and it shows, with all the enemies just paste here and there without any proper thought. Not to mention, it seems in many cases the same tilesets are the tilesets are usually recycled. Outside of the dwarven area I havent seen any corridor that I felt was out of the ordinary.

Yes its a requirement in a action / adventure game sadly. Its sad when my mage can take a 1hand weapon and kill stuff faster then my damage spells :(

Agreed, the combat is sorely lacking in common sense. My Bosmer thief got into a fistfight with a heavily-armoured warrior in a bar. I'd call my guy weak at hand-to-hand combat, but it's hard to tell when there's no hand-to-hand stat, or even a strength score. Anyway, the fight began and...I just rapidly clicked mouse one. She hit me back a few times, sometimes did a fancy spinning move, but it was basically Rock'em Sock'em Elves. I won. Yay.

Are you guys playing on Master? The bar fights for me were pretty cool. Since there's no guard button (WTF Bethesda? I can't block hand to hand ) I would get smashed trying to straight up brawl with the patrons. The difficulty simple gave them too much health and damage bonuses for me to get up with. So each time I would have to kite and bait them around the tavern, getting close enough for them to try to hit me, and quickly doling out one or two quick punches before darting back out of range. Whittle them down to about 1/4 health suffering only minor damage myself, and then go balls out in the final seconds as a battle of attrition heavily in my favor.

I felt like Ali in those moments :D

And are full of Nostalgia. After playing Oblivion, I couldn't stand the combat, lack of fast travel and having to just wait for yourself to be catapulted across the world, overcomplicated and cluttered UI, pointless stats, etc. I will admit the main story was written better in Morrowind and Oblivion also suffered the useless stat syndrome but Morrowind just hasn't aged too well in terms of gameplay. I tried to go back and play it but it feels like the game goes out of its way to stop your immersion. Despite the fact that Oblivion felt completely half-assed, it is still a much better experience than Morrowind is. And before you call me a casual or an action junkie know that my favorite genre of games is grand strategy. I don't mind mind deep games, in fact I love them. I just hate it when fun and immersion are sacrificed for an artificial depth that consists of making the game more complicated than it needs to be instead of actually fleshing out the mechanics of the game.

Skyrim has no VATS as it isn't a Fallout game. As for combat, it's a lot more focused on close-quarters encounters and I feel it's a lot more exciting. The game also has a whole hell of a lot more things to do.

But does Skyrim have the radio? ITS THREE DOG!!!!!!!! AAAAAAAAAOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUUU

It has something better. Amazing atmospheric soundtrack.

im not voting yet as i am still playing skyrim. i also want to give it a bit of time to sit before i make that call. so far though: i prefer morrowind as a setting. skyrim is still very very nice though and i prefer it to cyrodil (i think the idea of cyrodil needs another shot. oblivion probably came a bit to early in the gen and bethesda just were not ready to realise it). i prefer skyrims combat system but i prefer morrowinds underlying system...if that makes sense :P. im not thrilled with the removal of some skills and the way characters are created in skyrim. morrowind offered a much better chance to tailor your character to your play style. but the actual fighting action is much better in skyrim. morrowind looks better :P. im only kidding. i also like skyrims crafting system. using the different tools to build different bits is nice. the way skyrim manages level scaling is also quite good. its there but at the same time the game has no problem throwing curve balls. maybe this will change as i get higher levels (im hoping for no basic enemies in the very best of armor). there is still that sense of accomplishment from gaining levels (something completly killed in oblivion). so its a real tussle for me at the mo. there are some clear improvements in skyrim but at the same time there are some areas im not delighted with.

Well the only Elder Scrolls game I have is Morrowind so it's not like I have much of a choice. :P I wanted to buy Oblivion but never did for whatever reason. But Skyrim looks really cool though, to good to pass up. So I'll definitely buy that game some day but not now, I'm kinda tight on cash now and got other games to beat so yeah...

I was already gunna get Skyrim, but this thread really makes me want it even more. It seems like the people who really liked morrowind like skyrim just as much, which is a good thing.

They probably like RPGs.

Firstly, let me point out that your interest in grand strategy has no bearing on your ability to discuss role-playing games. It's a great genre, and good on you, but it's irrelevant. Morrowind hasn't aged at all in gameplay, simply because it's gameplay was never improved upon in any of its sequels. The Elder Scrolls has a history of subtracting complex gaming elements, but Morrowind is considered the pinnacle balance between depth and detail. Your point about immersion is a criticism many people have brought up, but fail to truly understand. Morrowind is a number crunching game that pretends to be a real-time game. It's like Europa Universalis having the presentation of Age of Empires but retaining its own gameplay. It's simply jarring to those who don't understand the concept. Morrowind was the last true Elder Scrolls game for people who love RPGs. That is to say, they love rolling a character and playing to the characters strengths and weaknesses in order to complete the game. That was true of most RPGs 'til the early 2000's. Ever since the beginning of this generation, RPGs are little more than exposition heavy narratives with pretty graphics and a farcical emphasis on 'choice'. The gameplay proper of these new RPGs have failed to meet the true RPG standard, though, for the politically correct climate, they've deemed this 'evolution'. I deem it BS.

Exactly! Morrowind just seems so pointlessly complicated. I mean, i dont like dumbed down action games, i enjoy my deep rts's and rpg's just as much as the next guy, but the whole stats driven system that morrowind has just doesnt seem to compliment elder scroll games. In morrowind if you build your character wrong in the beggining your screwed for the rest of the game, the more dynamic and organic system in skyrim just is way more immersive and free.

Let the Skyrim hype die down. Do this poll again in a year and Morrowind will be number 1 again.

Morrowind for me thus far, but I've only seen the first couple minutes of Skyrim to insure it installed correctly. Got a couple games to still get through and I know once I get going on Skyrim I'm not gonna get anything else done with other games for some time.

I couldn't make it past the ten-hour mark in Oblivion and so far I'm loving Skyrim. If you go through this thread, you'll notice a lot of people who like Skyrim didn't care for Oblivion.

This. Its new and shiny right now hell the hype machine before it was released was SKYRIM = GOTY why? BECAUSE ITS SKYRIM. The fact that its on the top when most people had the opinion that it was goty before it was released. Yeah...

I love them all but Morrowind will probably always be my favourite (most likely due to nostalgia).

bethesda out did themselves with skyrim. its easily their best game. better than any of the elderscrolls games and fallout 3. (tho i still prefer the world of fallout)
