So far, I have to say Morrowind. Skrim is definitely better than Oblivion in most departments, but anyone who says it's better than Morrowind cannot have truly played and enjoyed the Elder Scrolls series pre-Oblivion. The difference in depth, player choice, creativity, sheer size makes Morrowind a longtime favorite. I will say Skyrim has a beautiful art style and aesthetic that is much better than Oblivion, but I'm not a fan of all the dumbing down.
[QUOTE="shakmaster13"][QUOTE="FrozenLiquid"] They probably like RPGs.And are full of Nostalgia. After playing Oblivion, I couldn't stand the combat, lack of fast travel and having to just wait for yourself to be catapulted across the world, overcomplicated and cluttered UI, pointless stats, etc. I will admit the main story was written better in Morrowind and Oblivion also suffered the useless stat syndrome but Morrowind just hasn't aged too well in terms of gameplay. I tried to go back and play it but it feels like the game goes out of its way to stop your immersion. Despite the fact that Oblivion felt completely half-assed, it is still a much better experience than Morrowind is. And before you call me a casual or an action junkie know that my favorite genre of games is grand strategy. I don't mind mind deep games, in fact I love them. I just hate it when fun and immersion are sacrificed for an artificial depth that consists of making the game more complicated than it needs to be instead of actually fleshing out the mechanics of the game. Firstly, let me point out that your interest in grand strategy has no bearing on your ability to discuss role-playing games. It's a great genre, and good on you, but it's irrelevant. Morrowind hasn't aged at all in gameplay, simply because it's gameplay was never improved upon in any of its sequels. The Elder Scrolls has a history of subtracting complex gaming elements, but Morrowind is considered the pinnacle balance between depth and detail. Your point about immersion is a criticism many people have brought up, but fail to truly understand. Morrowind is a number crunching game that pretends to be a real-time game. It's like Europa Universalis having the presentation of Age of Empires but retaining its own gameplay. It's simply jarring to those who don't understand the concept. Morrowind was the last true Elder Scrolls game for people who love RPGs. That is to say, they love rolling a character and playing to the characters strengths and weaknesses in order to complete the game. That was true of most RPGs 'til the early 2000's. Ever since the beginning of this generation, RPGs are little more than exposition heavy narratives with pretty graphics and a farcical emphasis on 'choice'. The gameplay proper of these new RPGs have failed to meet the true RPG standard, though, for the politically correct climate, they've deemed this 'evolution'. I deem it BS.FrozenLiquid
Well said. An RPG is about role-playing a character, it shouldn't be about player twitch skill, but about character skill. And while there may be some semblance of choice in modern RPG games, the sheer amount of options and depth of each option in games like Morrowind demonstrates what is already obvious for some of us. Classic RPG developers dumbed down their game to get a bigger market share, making them more like interactive movies than Role-playing games. Look no further than Bioware to see another company that has done this.
I am a huge fan of Morrowind but I have to give it to Skyrim, for me its Skyrim, Morrowind, then Oblivion. Although I never could get myself to finish Oblivion I just purchased Oblivion deluxe pack on Steam for $6.49. Maybe with a few mods I might try and actually finish the game this time around. That is of course after the 300 or so hours I will probably spend in Skyrim.
Everyone is just all excited over Skyrim. I'm sure this is the first (or second?) Elder scrolls for the majority of the voters here. For its time, morrowind was the best, and the quality of the series has fallen since then (as a serious RPG) as it has become more and more mainstream.
