Being badass has very little to do with what they look like. It's all on how they act. It also doesn't have to be killing just to kill or something like that.

I'd say that there's a big gab between a 'badass' and a 'psychotic lunatic'.

A badass (imo, obviously) never has to speak or draw a weapon - he can clear a room with a steely gaze. If he does have to draw a weapon, it's usually for a quick, clean kill - he won't maim enemies for his own sick amusement, he'll just get the job done.
A lunatic, meanwhile, tends to grunt and roar a lot while decapitating everyone he meets.

Kratos doesn't strike me as the former - I don't think there's anything particularly badass about him that can't otherwise be described as a serious mental instability.
Sure, he kills a lot and sleeps around, but Geralt does more or less the same thing while remaining *respectable*.

Actually, to paraphrase the Sniper: "one's a profession[al] and the other's a mental sickness".
