So why exactly do you pay for Xbox Live?

Instead of just using a PC? Facebook? Netflix? Both are on your PC and to no real surprise are better to use on there.

"but but I wanna use teh TV and hooking a PC up to one is so inconvenient!" - Yeah sure is hard plugging that cord into the back of your PC. Whew, what a workout.

"okay smartass. But now I have to use a keyboard and mouse, thats really inconvenient!" - Actually if you're so inclined there's plenty of ways to use a controller to do... well, everything. And heck if you have a wireless keyboard now typing is actually easier than a console.

"okay but the PC costs so much more!" - Sure, initially. But your games cost less and you're not spending a dime on XBL. Say you buy 10 games brand new a year. Thats $100 saved on PC. Say you've had it for 3 years, seems reasonable. Thats $300 less in cost, plus we'll be nice and say about $150 for XBL over those 3 years. Thats $450 you didn't spend. Golly gee whiz, if you add that to the price of a 360 its... more than a PC would cost you :|

"but then you still have to buy the TV or monitor. HA!" - What, you wouldn't have to for the 360?

"Okay fine, but what about the games. Isn't that what really matters?" - Yeah, if you prefer the much smaller and more expensive selection, I guess so.

So you see. In the long run, you're just wasting money. Your games cost more. You're paying MORE to use your own internet (on top of additional fees for using things like Netflix). You're literally letting Microsoft charge you to do things you... could already do.

Oh and inb4elitism. Truth isn't elitism :)

The only reason anyone pays for Live is so they can play online with their xbox360. The rest of the clap trap in your post had nothing to do with your question.

I haven't payed ANYTHING to play online. So having/getting good deals for XBL doesn't even qualify as damage control.

what you wrote has little todo with the title of your topic.

Anyway, I don't pay for Xbox LIve cause I'm not interested in what they offer.

I use consoles, because there are actually many great games that are not on Pc, mostly genre-representative games.

On the other hand, there are genres that play best on Pc, such as Fps's, rts's, rpg's, adventures, rpg's.

1.Dont have a pc in my room.
2.Its a all in comprehensive service that is still far superior in features and stability then psn.
3.Microsoft actually takes care of hackers and cheaters and they for the most part stay down...Psn not so much when they do get em they are back within a few days if not less.
4.did I mention its a comprehensive all inclusive that keeps getting updated to be better? dont get so much on psn where most updates do much of anything.
5.I've been on it for a long long time..will be comming up on 10 years november of 2011 and it hasn't disapointed me very often.
6.Its still superior to PSN specially in the realm of p2p connections Sony literally does nothing for developers in this area which is why ps3 p2p is inferior. Dedicated servers are the same though.

you may have noticed my argument is psn vs xbox live...this is becasue your initial arguement is spotty and lame at best you are comparing a service to an entire pc system you brought up so many arguments that have nothing to do with a comparison between online services.

Great for you. I don't see how stating a fact qualifies as damage control, but ok. If I can pay $20-30 for something that should be costing me $60, it's a good deal to me.

1. That's a reason now to pay for XBL?
2. PC is superior to anything XBL puts out...and it's doesn't charge for usage of Twitter, Facebook and has webbrowsers...XBL silver or ''Free'' subscribers don't have anyhing.
3. That's a reason to pony up $60 for XBL? Surely, getting rid of hackers and cheaters isn't THAT expensive.
4. PSN doesn't get updates? At least almost, if not all PS3 updates are usable for all PS3 users. Unlike XBLG, you'll have to download a ****laod of updates you won't ever use if you're a free user.
5. It's not dissapointing so it's totally legit to pay for it? Cars don't dissapoint me yet I don't buy them.
6. Yeah paying for P2P... I'll just...leave...

Most people dont have a dedicated gaming PC they can shove into the living room entertainment / home theater. You will be playing Shogun 2 while the rest of the family are waiting in line to email friends or surf the net.

So the solution instead of a second PC that'd save money in the long run is a console that'd cost more in the long run? Wow, no wonder $60 games and DLC sell so easily.

What if I'm not interested on the games on PC? Cheaper on the long run or not, it's useless to buy a cheaper system if the games I want are on another.

People will say all sorts of things to justify it.......... but the simple answer is,

if you want to play online games on the 360, you have no choice.

$600 - The average amount paid for XLBG if you started paying from launch.

....and counting.....

Because I just want to play games online, and don't really care whether or not it's "right" to pay for it. It's a completely trivial amount of money to me.

How is it arrogant to share my own personal circumstances? I never said that they applied to anyone else. Obviously for some people the money will matter a lot more, or even less than it does to me.

I don't pay for Xbox Live, mainly because I very rarely play games with other people. The only games that I currently play with others is LittleBigPlanet 2 and both Left 4 Dead games on the PC.

I never understand these kind of topics. Most people buy 12-month XBL subscriptions for $45 and the service offers more content than my local cable TV which has no good show I want to watch. What do you gain from dissuading people from paying for Xbox Live which is an essential part of the console? I thought a level 35 poster would have figured it out years ago.

I don't really see how 60$ a year is a whole lot of money, considering people spend that much on a game purchase. Edit: not everyone is a computer gamer, and not everyone has the intellect or time to build their own computer for cheaper.

One more game a year > paying a purely profit driven fee

You can say they don't care, but deep down inside... you care, just like you would care if I stole $60 from your bank account every year for nothing.

People have 3 options,

1) Take a stand and don't pay it, and get your online jollys someplace else.

2) Pay it but admit the milking.

3) Pay it and justify it to yourself... and some times others.

I was 2 but now I'm 1. I see allot of 3s here. :P

Edit: I guess there is a 4,

you don't care about the cost of live but you cant afford a computer..... interesting

Because $50 is pocket change? Same reason I spend $50 on PS+. Also, hooking up a PC to a TV isn't always the simplest of processes, as HDMI cables can only be so long and getting a keyboard and mouse to work through walls can be a pain. But if you're going that route for Netflix, you're doing it wrong - if you've got a bit of money lying around a Boxee Box, Apple TV, or Roku are far better devices than any of the consoles (or god forbid) a PC for streaming movies.

Haven't you heard all the people saying they buy consoles for friends?

I'm pretty DEAD CERTAIN that you can't play with friends on the PC, so if you're going into it thinking you can then I feel sorry for you. You'll be disappointed.

You need a console for friends. I'd suggest the Xbox 360 with Xbox Live Gold! :)

Made me lulz a bit

i pay because i like the service, and i like to play my favorite exclusives online. 60 dollars a year is not a big deal under my personal circumstances, and i think the service is good enough to justify paying for it.

i plan on getting a gaming PC in the future when i have a lot of money to blow. i going to get a very good one so it will cost a lot. buying a midrange PC is pointless since i already have my consoles.
