Typical nintendo, they didn't even develop a single new IP and once again the loyalist eat it up and are satisfied with that. It is a fact that Nintendo innovates in their games. Metroid Prime was innovative and completely different compared to the games before. There is no point in trying to say that they are not innovative, simply because they create new games in the same IP. They are different.

I think the word you are looking for is "influence". Innovate, they do. Influence other games nowadays? That is a different story.

Vita has better fighters than 3DS. It has better racers than 3DS. It has better smaller digital titles than 3DS. The eshop in general is pretty terrible in comparison. The whole layout is a mess and hardly anything even has a trial. If it has much decent content it's hard to tell. 3DS isn't even capable of twin stick shooters(and I mean games like sine mora, super stardust, big sky infinity). Vita has better shooters. Gravity Rush is better than any adventure game on 3DS. It has more quality platformers than 3DS right now with the only platformers worthy of mention on 3DS being Mario games and an inferior version of Rayman. The PS Store is so packed with awesome Vita content it's unreal. I'm drowning in Vita games, especially thanks to PS Plus. Haven't bought a 3DS game since Resident Evil, and don't plan on buying anymore until yoshi. Vita? Well first I have to finish my massive backlog, finish more free plus games I'm gonna get, there are tons of vita games currently out that I want to get at some point, some being psn games and some being retail. I look forward to Tearaway and Killzone this year. Then once PS4 hits I'm gonna be able to play every PS4 game on it. Vita is pretty much the best handheld I've ever touched, and I've used it almost daily since the day I got it. It's the most underrated gaming device since the Master System.

Of course they are part of it! So, having a physics engine (portal gun/gravity gun) isn't part of the gameplay in Portal or Half Life 2? The portal gun (gameplay mechanics such as lifting objects, creating portals) is the gameplay.

Only visuals. In gameplay and overall quality? Nothing on the PS4 looks fun, while the 3DS is killing it with each ND.

No new Ips for this batch when it comes to Nintendo, but they have made several new ones, or brought back old ones over the years. Its just that people don't notice it either just for the argument of Ninty not doing anything new, or that they truly don't know due to them normally being much more niche in comparison.

Some games I can think of lately are what they just announced: LttP 2 and Yoshi's Island 3DS. Not new, but they are spiritual successors. Last and this gen was a giant IP dump like Glory of Heracles, Captain Rainbow, Rhythm series, Elite Beat Agents, Nintendoland, Harmoknight. Dillon series, etc. etc.

Edit: Holy hell, I messed up the acronym to one of the best games in the series ever...

For the record, Glory of Heracles was not a new IP last generation.  The series has been around since the 8-bit era.   Glory of Heracles was just the first one to make it out of Japan.  In fact, this game is atcually the sixth game in the series.

Why is it so important to have a new IP?

I've seen "new IPs" that are just clones/rip-offs of other games, and I've seen sequels with more innovative gameplay than most other games on the market.

 

It's stupid to automatically draw the conclusion that because something is a sequel that it's automatically worse than a new IP.

The changes from OoT to SS are far bigger than what Uncharted or GoW did. Hell the changes from Twilight Princess to SS are bigger than the changes from UC1 to UC3.

Super Mario Galaxy is also a lot different from Super Mario 64, the only thing that really is the same is the plot, and the fact that you need to collect stars. Level design philosophy, strucuture, refined mechanics, gravity are some changes from the top of my head.

Prime, I can give you that (Metroid Prime 3 does not exist).
