The 360 is ahead of the PS3 in sales. However, even if they were on equal footing, this would not be a suprise given that the 360 had an extra year to accumulate sales. Realistically, the only thing that is important is the rate of sales over various time slices.

As we know, the PS3 had an amazing last few weeks. With a slew of great releases, a great pricecut, and a sexy looking addition to their SKU lineup, it's no wonder why. What remains is to see how long this stride lasts, and whether this will be enough to stay lasts.

Hard data aside, what about the social aspect of the PS3? I think a person would have to be living under a rock to have not noticed the sudden surge of interest towards the PS3. This is rather unprecidented, to the extent that I do not believe this kind of social surge happened in a long time. Polls across message boards are indicating that the PS3 is ahead... and this mindset is just as important as any bit of raw data. Quite simply because it is one of the measures of successs.

Who is really winning the console race? Socially speaking, it seems like the win is now in Sony's hand.

Socially speaking, the 360 has still sold 7 more million units, which means that hypothetically there are 7 million more xbox 360 owners than ps3 owners, so that makes it more popular

PS3 sold over 10 million consoles in 2008 despite competition from the Wii and 360, despite a $400 price tag, despite the 360 being slashed to $200 later that year, and despite one of the worst holiday sales seasons since perhaps the Great Depression. So you're telling me that 7 million 360s sold in 1 year without any competition from the Wii and PS3 is supposed to be impressive?

very underwhelming for the PS3 considering coming into this gen they had such a huge market share. Also, the TC is completely looking at the PS3 with rose colored glasses, almost every multiplat sells better on the 360, the most popular multiplats sell best on the 360, so the PS3 is really a major dissapointment. Considering they lose money every console they sell, and considering they had to slice its price of 600 to 300 just to be competitive with the 360 is another show of desperation for the PS3. The 360 right now is ahead by 7 million console users, has a better attach rate, and holds most of its weight in NA which is the # 1 region. Sorry TC, nice try, but maybe when the numbers support your claims you can make a case, right now you sound like you are wishing.

Are you saying 7 million xboxes just vanished? 360 still has sold more units, meaning more people own a 360 TODAY than the amount of people that own a ps3 TODAY, and isn't that popularity? Untill the ps3 officially is in 2ND place of sales, it isn't anymore popular than the xbox

Over 10 million? I thought it was down from 2007, where it sold roughly 8.5 million units if I remember. Some links would be nice.

there was a smaller gap after the first year of ps3 release, the gap increased, so, 360's has sold more year to date from the ps3's launch.

Another way to measure success is to see who's buying games. That's what a video game console is all about, right? The attach rate for the PS3 is, at best, 3.4. The attach rate for the 360 is 8.7. This could go along with your whole social theory, as well. Who's winning the console war? Nintendo. Who's in last place? PS3.

Here is a question for you then, How come the ps3 didn't seal the gap with price drop?

100th week of sales from launch (started from there different sales dates, 1 yr apart)

360: 12million

ps3: 15million

150th week

360: 21 million

ps3: 24.5 million

154th week

360: 22 million

ps3: 25.5 million

200th week

360: 32million

ps3: HASENT BEEN OUT THAT LONG.

so as you can see the ps3 is beating the 360 and would be beating the 360 if they launched at the same time....

edit: formatted for better viewing pleasure :) lol

Funny whenever a cow tries to make up some excuse as to why Sony is getting beat down by the competition they never add the fact that the PS3 has a Blu Ray drive into their calculations. For all we know 50% or more of the PS3s sold were sold as movie players, and I'm not just saying that because the sales numbers for games and the attach rate fleshes this theory out. Sad to see how far the mighty juggernaut that was Sony has fallen. Instead of totally dominating everyone like usual now they have to scramble for Microsoft and Nintendo's table scraps. In case you cows can't read between the lines this gen has already been decided and in the 360s favor at that. Don't bother mentioning the Wii because while it has the most hardware sold, it doesn't set trends and doesn't seriously effect the industry as far as I can tell in regards to the real game machines or real games it is irrelevant to the context of this discussion.

I think you might be wanting to check the statistics again, the xbox 360 has to date sold 32,643,620 units according to VGchartz, the ps3 has sold 25,134,535 units, the difference is 7,509085 units. and from the time gap nettet the 360 5,883,469 units. So technically, the 360 would still be in the lead if it had launched in 2006

So you're telling me that 7 million 360s sold in 1 year without any competition from the Wii and PS3 is supposed to be impressive?

TREY_FOR_LI4E

Here is a question for you then, How come the ps3 didn't seal the gap with price drop?

PS3 is supposed to sell 7 million consoles from August until now?

Well based on what every cows yelling on system wars, this was the "final strike to the 360" and the "ps3 were now in the lead", despite N4G later came and showed the ps3 only outsold the 360 by a mere 170,000 units in september. If that is supposed to be sealing the gap, then the ps3 would need roughly 41 months to make up for the 7 million gap that has been standing nearly as you say, the start of the PS3 launch

Do you have proof that MS counts fixed 360's as sales, or just an assumption?

AND, if that's the case, you also didn't take into account the failure rate of the PS3, which is significantly less but would still require adjustment.

Unless of course you wanted to make a biased stereotypical system wars comment - in which case, your post was great.

Socially speaking, the 360 has still sold 7 more million units, which means that hypothetically there are 7 million more xbox 360 owners than ps3 owners, so that makes it more popular

Socially speaking, the 360 has still sold 7 more million units but most owners own two or three, which means that hypothetically there are 7 million more xbox 360 consoles sold but really about 3 million owners than ps3 owners, so that makes it more popular

I'd also add that despite this alleged larger install base, the big name multiplats usually sell 50/50 on both PS3 and 360 (and in some cases, they sell more on the PS3). This occurs even despite the fact that some multiplats have exclusive content on the 360.

Did all the ps3 users team up and decide that they weren't going to offer any proof behind what they say today?

First the TC's post offered nothing at all. Than a few posts above there is a claim against VGcharts, and than sales numbers with no link provided as a source. And now I you decide to offer "usually sell 50/50 with sometimes more on ps3", with no evidence at all.

Honestly, do you guys think that anyone buys this?

1.st one for Munasha, where do you have the source of this? and more importantly why would people buy 3 360's?

TREY_FOR_LI4E: Again, where do you have any proof of this? N4G reported that GTA IV for the 360 sold significantly better than the ps3 version, same goes for fallout, oblivion and nearly every other multiplat out there.

PS3.MortalDecay
lolwut, im pretty sure PS3s was at 7.9 last July. Whys it suddenly dropped?

Peeps buy multiple 360s cuz they keeping getting the rrod which then obviously raises the 360 sales. If ps3 was such a bad machine,it would have just as many sales as the 360.

Here is a question for you then, How come the ps3 didn't seal the gap with price drop?

DoomZaW

100th week of sales from launch (started from there different sales dates, 1 yr apart)

360: 12million

ps3: 15million

150th week

360: 21 million

ps3: 24.5 million

154th week

360: 22 million

ps3: 25.5 million

200th week

360: 32million

ps3: HASENT BEEN OUT THAT LONG.

so as you can see the ps3 is beating the 360 and would be beating the 360 if they launched at the same time....

edit: formatted for better viewing pleasure :) lol

I think you might be wanting to check the statistics again, the xbox 360 has to date sold 32,643,620 units according to VGchartz, the ps3 has sold 25,134,535 units, the difference is 7,509085 units. and from the time gap nettet the 360 5,883,469 units. So technically, the 360 would still be in the lead if it had launched in 2006

no, i think im right. if they were launched at the same time the ps3 would be winning and i proved that by the data i included. also i dont know where you get 25.1 mill. ( i just checked there to see what you were saying) BUT the ps3 has 25.5million sold the 360 32.6 million. the difference is 7.1 million...... so the ps3 would technically be winning if they luanched at the same time.

edit: errors in my post, fixed
