Say what you want but the SNES,PS1,PS2,and DS all won because of their superior software, notice how all but the snes were the weakest of their Gen. Don't expect the Software>Hardware to change anytime soon, I don't see why Sony cares about power now all of a sudden.

Good hardware certainly helps.

The better the hardware, the better the software, with few exceptions.

If we didn't have good hardware, video games would have hit a brick wall years ago.

The snes was the strongest of his gen, the sega used some add-ons though later that gen to make it stronger than snes but the damage was already done.

I'm sure the hardware enabling such games to exist have nothing to do with it. Both are needed for gaming to prosper.

Sony is trying to sell there disc formats n tvs in their playstations now

thats why they make it powerful

ps1 was about gaming

ps2 was about gaming

ps3 was about hdtvs, 3dtvs, n disc format......then gaming

just like they famously said at E3 the ps3 is not a gaming console lol

In some ways weaker hardware can actually help. If it's more cost effective to develop for weaker hardware then perhaps more developers will flock to the weaker system. I think that may have been a major reason why the PS1 was successful and consequently the PS2.

Also the fact that Nintendo was capable of still producing some of the best games this gen on extremely dated hardware says something.

I prefer sony/ms titles anyday over nintendo though that is cool that they have appealed to such a wide audience.

That doesn't change the fact DVD was out for 5 years prior to the PS2 using it. DVD already dropped in price significantly by the time the PS2 came out.

The first blu-ray movies came out in late June 2006. Less than five months later the PS3 had a bluray drive in it. Sony lost money by putting the bluray in the PS3.

World of difference between the two.

Not saying Sony does not view the Playstation as that. They just use their consoles as a way to sell other products. Blu-Ray,DVD,Mini Disc, and also they were using the PS3 to sell 3D TVs.

Correct. And the SNES had a weaker CPU than the Genesis if you didn't know. They used special in-cart addon chips like the Super FX to make up for the lacking CPU.

The only difference you have managed to bring up is time. Blu-ray players were $900+ when they first launched. PS3 like the ps2 were cheaper alternatives that not only packed video playback but also gaming functionality. Maybe not mainstream pricing but a hell of a lot closer than players released before ps2 and ps3. BTW DVD was not released worldwide until1999 so while the tech existed it in 95( it was not readily available to consumers until 97-99.

How much was the PS2 in 2000? We already had sub-$130 DVD players by that time. We still have a JVC DVD player and a Pioneer karaoke DVD player from 2000. The Pioneer was hitting $200. But, the JVC was much less, way less.

SNES was built on the sole reason to out power Sega even though it still wasn't the most powerful console that gen. the DS won because of hardware. Cheap price, and BC are aimed at the hardware. Xbox beat gamecube and did well having software breaking sales records in short periods of time, and having media option, such a thing may have been threatening next gen, solution? PS3. Heck PS2 ignore online until LIVE. It's easy to figure out why they like power now.

it seems we're entering a new age. For me growing up it was an age with a rabid lust for more processing power. Now, it's really neat to have but not essential. Look at the rise of Apple, a whole corporation that puts processing power as a low priority in favor of sleek design, friendly user interface, and high profitability

On top with install problems, running problems (error messages), control issues and having to update every 1-3 years and the creme dela creme missing out on exclusives and console only games and if I were to miss out on those I might as well quit gaming so no thanks.

The better the hardware the better the games can be, just look at the PS3. The PS3 hardware is the reason why PS3 exclusives are more powerful than the competition, it's not outdated like the other guys. Look at Uncharted and Killzone and God of War and MGS4 ect... then look at the 360 exclusives and Wii exclusives, they can't match up.

We'll soon find out. Or not. The PS3's architecture is very odd, but then again the PS2 wasn't exactly conventional either. I hope the Cell isn't just a short term solution as that will mean Sony has a winner on their hands.

It would only make sense. They recently bought that factory that makes the Cell Processors, and although Sony has had their pitfalls, I doubt they would do that unless they knew the cell was going to be worth it. Hopefully this means full backwards comparability too :) (and a cheaper buy-in price at launch....yeah maybe I am asking too much of sony. :P )

BLACK on the less graphics, and less power PS2 has superb graphics that (in my opinion) has better graphics than some older ps3 games.

Among all the consoles its the PS3 that balanced both. The PS3 got great hardware and software. Blu ray + Cell = Uncharted 3, Killzone 3, LBP2 & God of War 3. So for me the PS3 is the way 2 go this gen. "The Last Of Us" i just can't wait

*looks at sales* SNES- 49.10 million

Genesis/Mega Drive- Estimated from 37.3 million to 40.9 million

Am I missing something here? How does most selling console not determine a winner?

In some ways weaker hardware can actually help. If it's more cost effective to develop for weaker hardware then perhaps more developers will flock to the weaker system. I think that may have been a major reason why the PS1 was successful and consequently the PS2.

Also the fact that Nintendo was capable of still producing some of the best games this gen on extremely dated hardware says something.

I disagree. PS1 was way more advanced than Saturn and multis clearly favor PSone. PSone had teh luck of being already successful and N64 NOT having a CD-rom , therefore N64 lost some major exclusives at that time that jumped on PSone and made it sell even better. Hardware wise VS N64 PSone wasnt better but CD-rom technically was way better/cheaper and convinient than cartdridge from a developers standpoint. SNES had the popularity of being stronger than Genesis therefore many classic arcade games looked better on SNES. Games like Street Fighter 2 or Mortal Kombat 2 etc. PS2 didnt won because it was weak. It won because it offered what GC couldnt. Amazing games , Bc , DVD-player along with DVD rom for games which back then was huge etc etc... So stronger hardware? Nop but technically offered a bunch of things other consoles didnt. ( I let Xbox aside because it came out later ). As for Wii.... Releasing "last" , "dying first " , third party support ( major multi titles ) arent releasing to 95M users ... means something also.

PSone was easier to develope for, the fact it used CD's was also a major pro for it aswell on top of that it launched at a nice pricepoint with a good marketing campaign and company strategy behind it.

The CPU in the PS1 was RISC based aswell, it was the right tech and the right time.

The biggest problems for PS3 has been architecture, the recession, price points and the way they advertise the console aswell.

So is that the reason why the WII sold alot? No, most family's with children loved the idea of motiong gaming. What about the Kinect that selles alot? Most people knew that there are like 10 good games for it...
