Ever since Call of Duty 4's popularity skyrocket, there has been disgustingly gratuitous ammounts of first person shooters that attempt to go for what Call of Duty achieved. Now that Skyrim has essentially raised the series' popularity to new levels, does anyone sense an RPG "fad" among developers next, much like the heaps upon masses of "Call of Duty clones"?

I remember the JRPG fad of last gen. It brought us some incredible games. I see no reason why a WRPG fad couldn't do the same.

Maybe. A RPG fad has already happened in gaming before.

We'll just have to wait and see. Though I think the bro gamers are in too deep for the shooter market to be uprooted just yet.

I wouldn't say RPG games, but I do think we'll see adding in RPG ELEMENTS into just about every game soon.

What has happened to the FPS genre since COD4 ? We have an over-saturation of increasingly shallow games. I dont want my rpg genre getting shallower, because devs want quick cash ins.

This will probably happen and much like what happened with JRPG's...the WRPG genre will become oversaturated with mediocrity, blandness, and cash-ins.In a few years, people will become jaded and critical towards them just like how they are with JRPG's this gen.

not sure how I'd feel about that. I love RPGs and I'd love to see more of them. but if it becomes more of a fad, then we'll see the market getting tons of cheap, poorly made, generic knockoffs, and the standards will plummet like they have for shooters

naw but 3rd person shooters most likely. Tho RPG is rising fast with alot of people.....even the cod crowd is getting into RPG's Also it will take more then skyrim to do it. Like a heavy flow of RPG's, not just one every 3-4 years.

mostly gamers are blinded by graphics/gory gameplay of WRPG(easy to customized your equipment and your Story[selecting your own route but it still the same ending])/even its looks(barbarian Gruesome/Awesome Character you played) than Complicated Gameplay(Lots of Customization/Different battle systems),MOE(cute girls, sophicated "Feminism[Neptunia GS review])",Comedy/Linearity Story with Anime Lookalike Characters and LOTS of GRINDING!]

but still Jrpg are struggling for sales and its fanbase while WRPG its evolving but some parts are still the same(with your ability to create your own story) with MP

But for Offline Gamers is a Plus because no need for DLC/Online gameplay

Wouldn't be the first time an RPG explosion happened. Of course last time I remember that happening we had Squaresoft churning out solid title one after the next.

Personally, I find myself having less and less time to sink my teeth into some of these beasts, school, work, friends, women, blah blah blah.

My favorite genre of game but sadly no time to play. :(

I doubt we'd have another RPG fad though, and if it did happen it would be very short lived.

You could argue that there already is - what did Modern Warfare 1 introduce which kept people addicted to their games far more than in any FPS ever? Levelling up, XP, progression systems, stat affecting perks, generally minor RPG elements. There's no reason why this addiction to RPG elements cannot be translated into other genres, look for example at Skyrim.

While I agree partially, I don't think WRPG's are a fad. They are here to stay. WRPG's have existed before the JRPG fad and it's even stronger now. JRPG's, well, there are just not enough of them any more so I could see why some would call it a fad. But I like JRPG's, wish there were more of them around but they keep restricting them to Japan only.

Its already happening in case you didnt notice. It was started slowly by Demons Souls as an "Call of Duty antigame" that refused the basic principles of modern FPSs (like cinematic feel, linearity, very little effort required from the player) and although it was exclusive to only one platform and had pretty much no marketing at all, gamers found it for themselves and it became an unexpected hit.

And look at this year - Witcher 2, Dark Souls, Skyrim... and many others just around a corner.

I hope not... There are way to many average / bad action / adventure games with minor rpg elements being sold as rpg's. If rpg's become the next "big thing" then i feel sorry for rpg's in general i mean i consider them to be dumbed down now days it would be worse after that.

Oh yes, I want actual RPGs and not the shallow crap we got this gen. Especially Turn Based RPGs preferably employing actual death mechanics (Permadeath/Expensive resurrection spells/ect). And the less they try to emulate WoW or Gears of War, the better.

WRPGs completely went down the toilet this gen. It is the only gen where I prefered JRPG offerings over WRPG offerings.

So for a game to be considered a "real" RPG? it has to b turn based? I keep seeing this sentiment crop up over and over again, "todays games aren't real RPGs because they use button actions and not turn based menus, etc...".

Are you really suggesting that RPGs must adhere to a 25 year old formula?Seems like people in your school of thought insist that the RPG genre can never evolve :?

They dont have to be turn based, just stat based. Even action can work, Mount&Blade came close to what I want. So too was my vision of how I believed Mass Effect was going to be (of course, that game disappointed me in that regard, like it disappointed me with everything else). Deus Ex could be describes as an ARPG, yet it is stat based enough for me to consider it an RPG.

Speaking of turn based, there are plenty of ways to evolve turn based combat. The best implementation we have seen in a video game is Temple of Elemental Evil developed in 2003.
