I wonder if it ever occurred to you that a lot of developers choose to go independent so that they have complete control over the creative and development process for their games. I know that it's very easy to look at a kickstarter kickoff on an E3 stage as farcical. Likely, nothing I or anyone else would say will keep you from seeing it as such. Fine. I get it.
However, one need only look at how a certain game got the axe recently to see why a developer would perhaps want to take that precaution. In Sony's eyes, they saw a title announcement that would enrich their lineup and came to a mutually beneficial arrangement. I say laugh it up. Shenmue 3 is going to be a reality and Scalebound goes to the great code graveyard in the Cloud. Extra bonus points for Gryffondor if Kamiya comes back from his hiatus and goes indie.
Even more extra points if Kamiya continues the development of his game without MS. Maybe Capcom will pick him up again.

The Yakuza series is great, it's the most underrated series around I'd say. Yakuza 0 comes out this month, get it if you have a ps4 because it honestly deserves success plus it deserves a spot in your gaming library.

You would have some meat to your argument if Yu Suzuki actually owned the IP. Fact is Sega still owns the IP, in dependency wasn't even a concern in this case. Yu Suzuki wanted his dream game to be made, fans wanted it but seemingly none of the publishers are willing to risk their money. Let's assume for a fact that it was indeed about independence from a publisher but then don't cows always brag about how friendly Sony is to the devs, what happened in this instance?
Fact of the matter is, it was a risky investment that's why Sony didn't provided funds. End of story. There were many cases where Sony gladly bought third party exclusives and funded it without any questions if they felt confident, the Order was a recent example. I'm pretty sure given choice RAD would love to own the IP but Sony did not approve, same with Sunset and Insomniac. You really think Sony would like to waste the opportunity of an exclusive if they believed it would make a return when they even tried to lock shit like Rapture before and once it failed they put it on steam. Sony producers promise a major software upgrades for the PlayStation 4 in 2017. President of Sony's Worldwide Studios for Sony Interactive Entertainment Inc., Shuhei Yoshida, wants the year 2017 to be a revolution in the Sony gaming console, and claiming it as the Year of PS4 Software.
The Playstation 4 gaming system has definitely provided a better experience for the recent versions and updates. The Sony exec now tells game enthusiasts that there is a need to match the smashing capabilities of the Playstation 4 console with spectacular games and apps dealt with the Playstation software. In the traditional year end mass interview of 4Gamer, the executives at Sony Interactive Entertainment Japan Studio revealed that they have been working endlessly to give video gamers surprises in 2017, Dual Shockers reported.
There are still no details provided by the Sony staff present in the event. Nonetheless, producer Teruyuki Toriyama stated that the tech giant is currently pitching some awesome concepts and ambitious titles for new games in Playstation 4. Toriyama also asked its fans to support Sony for the year ahead.

Yoshida then said that 2016 has been the year of upgrades for the PlayStation console. With the emergence of PS4 Slim, PlayStation VR and PlayStation 4 Pro, Yoshida said that his focus is to provide amazing software for gamers, according to We Got This Covered.
E3 is going to likely be very game focused. They've had plans for some of their bigger names to transition to new stuff as soon as possible. It starts to make sense that there was a sizable focus on known games and third party at PSX. You haven't even seen the final form.
