When asked about Sony's competition with Nintendo's 3DS and smartphones, Kawano replied that internally, Sony does not see the 3DS as a direct competitor to the Vita because the two products are different--different in looks and different in price points. Kawano also said he does not regard smartphones as a competitor to the Vita either; according to the Sony Japan president, gaming is not the main focus of smartphones but merely just a bonus. The Vita, on the other hand, is designed for games, with extra features like social networking elements and applications built on top of that. He went on to say that he doesn't believe that people who want to buy a gaming system will go out and buy a smartphone, for exactly this reason.Gamespot

This sounds a bit like what they said about the PSP and the DS. Is this denial, or is this Sony covering up for if/when the 3DS outsells the Vita? Or is it none of that, and they are just saying what they truly believe?

Yep, different markets. Although I still disagree as they are both competing, even if its indirectly.

Edit: To add, if you look at the handheld market, People are not choosing between PSV and 3DS. It's not something like "I boughta 3DS, therefore I don'tneed to buy the PSV anymore". You can buy both.

The Wii was clearly geared at a casual audience outside of the traditional core audience. The 3DS and the Vita on the other hand are both fighting for the core handheld market.

Well, I think anybody who isn't dumb can see what type of audience Sony is trying to appeal to if you look at all the features they talk about and what 3DS talks about. I've heard more about being able to access Facebook and other non gaming stuff on Vita than the games.

PSP had bro games and RPGs.

And they were good ones, too! DS needs moar Fire Emblem, though. That last game should have been localized.

That only holds up pre Move/Kinect anyway.

Both systems are catering to the same crowd -- "gaming enthusiasts". Nintendo got MH for a reason.

The only difference now is hardware.

3DS has those games, Resident Evil? It'll get CoD and such aswell, DS had them.

Designed for games, yet it has the same battery life as it's competitor, smartphones offer better features than the Vita can (calling, internal memory and expandable memory via SD cards, lower priced games, and multi tasking capabilities.) The 3DS and Vita are against each other and the Smartphones are taking over the handheld market, Sony shouldn't ignore this.

Their bottom line is the only thing that matters to them. They could lose to the 3DS by 60 million units and not care if they could make a couple hundred million dollars of profit off their venture. But then again, this is SW; where being out of touch with reality reigns supreme. Nevermind I said anything. Please continue for my pleasure.

well I agree for once with Sony :Vita is a mulitimedia device and not made for games(unless you are interested in playing watered down PS3 games and PS2 ports). But 3DS on other hands is made just for games and real gamers.Core gamers can be proud of the 3DS and Nintendo.

He's right actually, at this point they're both really competing against smartphones and tablets. Take a look at the Vita's UI and tell me doesn't look like it was influenced by smartphone UIs, a lot of the Vita's features were influenced by smartphones. Dedicated gaming handhelds are a thing of the past.

We could say the same thing to Vita where everything but Uncharted is a port. Both systems have core games on it.

The hardware seem to target completely different gamers. But Nintendo's trying to capture the core crowd with the software (and thus trying to compete with Sony). However, I think Nintendo will fail in capturing the core crowd just like they have been failing so far. I laughed a lot when they said core gamers will be the first to buy the 3DS for games like DoA. Then I saw the sales for the game and the system, and laughed a bit more.

Imo the markets for the DS and PSP (and for the 3DS and Vita) are closer than the markets for the Wii and PS3. Sony better be careful writing off the 3DS (which I'm sure they're not doing internally).

But there have been WAY more game announcements than talk about social apps. Even when Sony does talk about other apps for the Vita, some are still social games - like Tag.

This sounds a bit like what they said about the PSP and the DS. Is this denial, or is this Sony covering up for if/when the 3DS outsells the Vita? Or is it none of that, and they are just saying what they truly believe?

*please change text color*:)

Whether they say it is or not, it will be sitting near it at retail stores--that makes it competition. I have a feeling they are going to push the ps3/vita combo, since they mentioned how the two can work together. If that doesn't take off, ps4 will be here sooner than most people think.

I just don't like how sony pushes this as a multimedia device for music/movies as well, when the battery is just crap.

I have to agree, as much as i find it hilarious how they said it about the PS3 and Xbox 360.

But there have been WAY more game announcements than talk about social apps. Even when Sony does talk about other apps for the Vita, some are still social games - like Tag.

Right, but what I'm saying I know more about those social apps on Vita than those games announced. A lot of vita game announcements there's barely any info on these games.
