Actually, Sony pretty much made the DS non-existent in Japan which ended up cutting off the majority of support for the system. This is why Nintendo is now trying every desperate move they possibly can to make the 3DS relevant in Japan - like getting MH4 on the system. And if you say something like, "Capcom's just betting on the winning horse!" I doubt they actually are. When even the investors don't want the game on the 3DS, you KNOW that Nintendo's dishing out for cash. Why does Nintendo need MH4? Like I said, they don't want to be obsolete in Japan because, last gen, a Sony handheld served them.

minh800

you're forgetting that if it wasn't for monster hunter, the psp would've pretty much have been just as dead in japan as it was in every other part of the world. Plus DS's support has dropped because nintendo has shifted focus on the 3ds. It already had the psp beat a looong time ago

Haha, it's a symbiotic relationship, actually. MH was NEVER as popular as it is before it went to the PSP. If it wasn't for the PSP, MH would NEVER have taken off. No, the DS's support was cut off a year ago because third party developers abandoned it.

and a year ago Nintendo announced the 3ds. WELL IMAGINE THAT

Their stocks fell after MH4's announcement. http://www.computerandvideogames.com/318639/capcom-square-enix-shares-drop-after-3ds-announcements/

minh800

Are you sure it was beacause of the 3DS announcement? After all, the old saying "correlation does not imply causation" seems to fit here.

There's nothing else to explain it. Square's stocks also fell by a bit after DQX's announcement.

Daily fluctuation? If I remember right, Nintendo stock also fell but recovered as part of daily fluctuation. But of course, fanboys claimed it was because the 3DS was a failure. Could this not be the case?

Haha, developers don't cut off their support for a system when a system is announced. The Vita was announced in January but developers have been making and announcing plenty of PSP games. Even with the Vita coming out in December, Namco has a Tales game for 2012 and a God Eater game, Sega has a Yakuza game, and Square has Lord of Apocalypse, and many other developers have their own titles as well.

I doubt it would account for a drop by that much.

You guys are terrible. Are you gamers or just people who follow a coorporation, with blinders on. I say if Sony says they aren't in competition let them prove it with their system.

Even so a couple of jrpg's coming to the system in the only region where it's still relevant doesn't change the fact that the DS already beat the psp a long time ago.

It's not a couple of JRPGs but I don't think you follow Japanese games enough to know how many games are coming to the PSP. If we're talking about hardware sales? Fine. But the only reason why hardware manufacturers even tried to sell a ridiculous amount of units is because they thought that the market leaders would get the most games. However, this gen proved otherwise. Developers gave the cold shoulder to the Wii and Japanese developers eventually abandoned the DS in favor of the PSP even though the DS has twice the install base. So now there's this other way that Sony could beat Nintendo - through getting more support. And to me, a gamer, I care more about developer support than hardware sales.

you seem to be forgetting all those years before hand where the DS got excellent third party support, even moreso than the psp.

It wasn't untill the very end that they decided to switch over

I'm not forgetting about it. It's just that the circumstances have changed dramatically since then - mainly in the Japanese industry. Developers primarily focus on handheld development now, and console gaming on the go became very popular over time in Japan.

Like in one of my my earlier topics about Sony caring if Vita does another PSP, they don't, and they'll still have a great handheld.

There both handheld gaming systems, so, im not sure what they talking about there. However, it is possible they dont care if it outsells the 3DS. As long as it sells well and Sony makes money on it, it really dosent matter how many units it sells in comparison to the 3DS.

DS and PSP appealed to very different markets, just as the 3DS and Vita will.

kaealy

The DS and PSP maybe (although the DS still appealed massively to core gamers, which is why they all love it so much), but the 3DS and the PS Vita are BOTH being marketed to the core handheld gaming market.

Mind telling us what games that makes you think that the 3DS is aimed for the core gaming market? Besides Remakes of old games or a Resident Evil here and there.

Really? So Kid Icarus Uprising, Beyond the Labyrinth, Layton vs Wright, Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle, Heroes of Ruin, Metal Gear Solid 3D, Mario Kart 7, Super Mario 3D Land, Paper Mario, Super Smash Bros, Monster Hunter 4, Bravely Default, Fire Emblem, Tekken Prime 3D Edition, Resident Evil: Revelations... these aren't core games? Will you really argue that?

Different markets. Nintendo said the same thing about the Wii for the same reason.

Nintendo_Ownes7

Only difference is that the Wii actually outsold its competitors, oh wait, different markets.

Nintendo also said that Vita isn't a competitor of the 3DS.

That was Sony who said that.

Oh I was thinking of an old Article when Nintendo said we aren't concerned about Sony they were talking about Move against the Wii.

They then stated that Apple is the "Enemy of the Future"

Aww, and here I was hoping it was a competitor. Still hopefully it stops all the wars here (yeah right).

IMO Sony is saying this in case they get creamed again. If they outsell it they will like "Yah we beatin u suckerz".

nintendo needs to learn a real good lesson...they never adapt to give what the market what it wants but goes out of the way to give the market what nintendo wants. They have much more $$ on hand and resources to make something that actually puts the psvita to utter shame..but they don't since they always like doing things wierdly.

That is actually a well thought out and sound statement. Technically the 3DS and Vita may be "competing against each other" but really the markets of people who are going to purchase a Vita is going to be different than the market who buys a 3DS give the difference of the two devices and the types of games they both have.

well....they are going after 2 different markets

eboyishere
What is that aliens and humans? If not, they are going after the same market. They want gamers. They both offer core games like RE on 3ds and UMVC3 on vita. And they both have unique games like the AR games on both systems. So unless aliens are the other market it is the same market.

They said the same thing about the Wii, but look who came out with the Move. People, don't like they aren't in the same market. That's such a cop out. Vita/3DS are in the same market, one appeals to everyone (like it should) and one is trying to appeal to only gamers. iOS/Android aren't in the same market IMO. Wait as Sony adds 3D to the PSV2 or a PSV Slim in 2013 or 2015 and tell me whether they were competiting with the 3DS Well I guess they aren't competiting, since I would call being outsold being very competitive, ZING! Seriously, this is pre-damage control by Sony. They know they will be outsold by the 3DS and they just want to stop the bleeding. I bet they didn't even think about how well the price drop continues to do in Japan (like 50k a weak roughly, let alone MH3G the week before Vita releases) I also think Nintendo got the edge on Sony in that the price drop AFTER the Vita's price was announced. Sony might have gone with $300 for the WiFi version if they knew getting the $169 Price Point of the 3DS was out of reach, BUT they thought the 3DS would stay $250 Sony going out of their way to price the Vita at the same price as the 3DS is saying they know who their competitor. If they're in such a market on their own with the Vita why not sell it for a friggin' profit like a normal business?

The market who buys a Vita is gamers, and there aren't a lot of nice core gamers who spend money. Why? Look at the Dreamcast. Lot of support for core gamers, no casual support, it died quick. Sony marketed the PSP at core gamers in NA and EU the whole gen and averaged a pathetic 2-5 million units per year in those regions for the last few years when the DS was hitting 15-20 million per year. Nintendo goes after gamers, and the casuals. Everybody. Marketing towards gamers only is stupid, silly business practice that I can't believe they are going with again this generation. In works in Japan kinda, but Japan is a small nation.

PSP made MH even though it got developed for PS2. The Wii got Tri but the sales could not match the PSP succes and "some Japanese retailers were forced to cut the price of MH3 by half in order to sell remaining copies" Yes JP loves handelds but dont count it will sell for the 3DS. Those who got a 3DS prefere Mario, Kirby and Pokemon.
