[QUOTE="minh800"]But there have been WAY more game announcements than talk about social apps. Even when Sony does talk about other apps for the Vita, some are still social games - like Tag.

Luxen90

Right, but what I'm saying I know more about those social apps on Vita than those games announced. A lot of vita game announcements there's barely any info on these games.

Maybe that's because social apps are much easier to outline and detail than entire games? There have been interviews as well that partially detail upcoming games but not every title will be fully explained. And there are many 3DS games that have barely any info on them like KH3D and Beyond the Labryinth and yet I don't see anyone saying that Nintendo isn't targeting gamers.

I agree Nintendo said they don't really see Vita as a competitor they are both wanting to take Apple down.

I'm going to purchase both systems.

Remind me again what are the social apps of 3DS? Because I don't know of them. I'm not saying Sony isn't targeting gamers, they obviously are, but they are trying to reach a different crowd as well.

I know of Streetpass and spotpass. Whatever "different" crowd Sony is trying to reach, I think its the same one Nintendo is.

Yes, Sony must care about this imaginary race made up by fanboys.

OneLazyAsian

Why wouldn't they? It's the only thing that matters.

Their bottom line is the only thing that matters to them. They could lose to the 3DS by 60 million units and not care if they could make a couple hundred million dollars of profit off their venture. But then again, this is SW; where being out of touch with reality reigns supreme. Nevermind I said anything. Please continue for my pleasure.

Oh, your pleasure is not the only motivating factor. ;)

Well he is right.... All hee's saying is even if you already have a smart phone there is still plenty the Vita has to offer in terms of gaming. There is no reason why you cant have both. And the 3DS as well both are selling at very different price points, and may in the end offer different gaming experience considering how drastic the hardware is between the 2.

yikes. even Sony thinks it'll be DS vs PSP all over again. Well I guess they really don't care. "Winning" for them == making lots and lots of money, even if other companies are making more money.

That's kind of mean of them to say. This is like if an Olympic athlete told a Special Olympics athlete that they are not competitors.

^ I don't think they're trying to say that they aren't in the same class. They're both dedicated game machines after all. I think they're saying that they can co-exist sort of like the DS and PSP did. DS sold more, but PSP sold well too. Sony is probably thinking this is going to be the same situation.

The opening statement here is ridiculous; of course 3DS and PSV are competitors- handheld game consoles-enough said. And pricepoints? 3ds launched at 250, PSV will launch between 250-300, and if they have any chance at waging war on Nintendo in the handheld arena, then PSV games better not cost any more than 40$. And lastly, what's all this nonsense about smartphones? 'If you buy a 3ds/psv you aren't buying smartphones'? That's ridiculous. I know because I've got a 3ds, an Android phone, and I'll eventually be buying my Vita.

They are trying to appeal to a different market, but I'm sure fanboys will take this as something more than that.

This isn't really true, though. They are trying to appeal to mostly the same market. You could make a case that Nintendo makes a stronger push towards kids and Sony makes a stronger push toward social networking, though.

They are saying they aren't competing so that when they get creamed they can argue that they didn't loose anything because they weren't fighting against them anyways

ps2 140million
ps3 49 million
wii 100million

id say the wii "who they are not competing against" had a big impact on their sales.

I would actually agree with this.

I don't view the Wii as a direct competitor to the PS3 or the 360. If you think about it, there are literally no titles shared between the Wii and the PS3/360 library. The libraries consist of completely different titles and cater to different demographics.

The same goes for the 3DS compared to the Vita thus far. None of the games have been multi-platform. The libraries are unique and differentiate themselves from one another.

I suppose you could use the analogy of buying a motorcycle or a car. Yeah, both a motorcycle and a car has the ability to get you where you want to go, just like how the 3DS and Vita both allow you to play games, but they differentiate themselves enough from one another that they have their own markets.

Something like the Xbox 360 and the PS3 are direct competitors because they share very similar hardware specs and game libraries along with console features. This would be much more like Honda Accord competing with Toyota Camry, 2 very similar cars aiming at the same demographic.

Well the PSVita hasn't released yet so you might be surprised if it does outsell the 3DS. I still remember when I was laughing at Nintendo for saying the exact same thing. I ended up eating my words.

Because Nintendo is more focused on Apple and I think Sony is also more focused on Apple.

True it may sell but my point was in response to ActionRemix's attempt to make it seem like the Wii used that excuse and failed to outsell it's competitors.

I don't think that was an excuse. I would say Nintendo did think it was a different market and they hit a gold mine. Either way, Nintendo ended up the winner in that round.

Well yeah...It's not in direct compitition intill you see a commerical praising one system and bashing the other.

But seriously. Weather Sony or Nintendo likes it, they are both competing ageanst each other. This is just a nice way of saying it I guess with out bashing the compeditor.

That said, I'll be geting both (already have the 3DS), and supporting both. I just hope the PSPV can get some games that are a truly unique experience that I would be hard pressed to find on home consoles.

This is exactly what they said about past nintendo products.

Both products aim at the current gen handheld systems, therefore they are competitors!

Actually, Sony pretty much made the DS non-existent in Japan which ended up cutting off the majority of support for the system. This is why Nintendo is now trying every desperate move they possibly can to make the 3DS relevant in Japan - like getting MH4 on the system. And if you say something like, "Capcom's just betting on the winning horse!" I doubt they actually are. When even the investors don't want the game on the 3DS, you KNOW that Nintendo's dishing out for cash. Why does Nintendo need MH4? Like I said, they don't want to be obsolete in Japan because, last gen, a Sony handheld served them.

you're forgetting that if it wasn't for monster hunter, the psp would've pretty much have been just as dead in japan as it was in every other part of the world. Plus DS's support has dropped because nintendo has shifted focus on the 3ds. It already had the psp beat a looong time ago

Saved me some typing :P

DS doubled PSP in hardware sales, not sure how big the gap was in software sales and rated games, but I'm sure it wasn't far behind. How embarrassing, no wonder Sony is trying to dodge Nintendo.

Haha, it's a symbiotic relationship, actually. MH was NEVER as popular as it is before it went to the PSP. If it wasn't for the PSP, MH would NEVER have taken off. No, the DS's support was cut off a year ago because third party developers abandoned it.

Actually, Sony pretty much made the DS non-existent in Japan which ended up cutting off the majority of support for the system. This is why Nintendo is now trying every desperate move they possibly can to make the 3DS relevant in Japan - like getting MH4 on the system. Where are you getting that investors don't want the game on the 3DS? Link please.

Their stocks fell after MH4's announcement. http://www.computerandvideogames.com/318639/capcom-square-enix-shares-drop-after-3ds-announcements/

Are you sure it was beacause of the 3DS announcement? After all, the old saying "correlation does not imply causation" seems to fit here.

Saved me some typing :P

DS doubled PSP in hardware sales, not sure how big the gap was in software sales and rated games, but I'm sure it wasn't far behind. How embarrassing, no wonder Sony is trying to dodge Nintendo.

Even with double the install base in Japan developers ended up focusing more of their resources on the PSP in the past 2 years. Why? Their games sold better on the system despite the lower install base. This is why Nintendo keeps saying their targeting core gamers because they buy the most software. And after that embarassing 40% price cut in Japan, it's obvious that Nintendo is desperate to stay relevant.

There's nothing else to explain it. Square's stocks also fell by a bit after DQX's announcement.
