I've given up hope long ago... then again, companies do make mistakes in things like extending trademarks, or renewing their website domain names and stuff... but yeah, trademark or not this game just isn't coming out.
A lot if people were holding on to hope the game would release at some point, including me. Team icon games on ps2 were great, unique and 'soulfull'
While their at it sony should abandon Team Ico.
incompetent fools.
This. Oh so much this. Heads need to roll if this turns out to be true.
never played ico or shadow, but was interested in the game:
Regardless whatever disputes had with SONY no excuse to not make anything in 15 years.....
People are still under the misconception that Team Ico is a studio. The studio developing TLG is Japan Studio, which has over 400 people working there.
Team Ico hasn't been a thing for a while now. TLG has not been in active development for as long as people think. The "Team Ico" people have worked on other games for Japan Studio. Japan Studio as a whole went through a large restructuring at the end of last gen, where they used to have over 80 games in development (which were going nowhere) and now have around 3 (TLG PS4, GR2 PS4, Unannounced PS4 game, and their various collaborations like Bloodborne).
With new management, Japan Studio is finally making progress on their games which should be revealed this year, which includes The Last Guardian and Gravity Rush 2, which have both been moved over to the PS4.
Sony has 2 months to renew the trademark for The Last Guardian.

15 years? You had me until you said a random number.
I guess that could be forgiven since you never bothered to ever play their other games at all, including 2005's Shadow of Colossus which was nearly 10 years ago btw.

Sony has willfully foregone renewing the trademark it holds for The Last Guardian, meaning that, as of today, the trademark is lapsed and filed as abandoned.
Just in case someone was still somehow holding out in hope of this game ever coming- let it go. Sony has.
What if they change the name of the game.?
Thats what i reckon they will do , re branding the game is the way forward to avoid all this talk of Vaporware and delays which lowers Hype and could effect sales, Everyone on here would know but the general public would be none the wiser and assume that this is an awesome new IP.
Gives them the opportunity to mess w characters and the storyline a bit and come up with an awesome ass kicker name for there 'New' game.
people still care about this game?
Man, I did lol.
For cows, this game was just another way to pad out lists for a generation. After a while they just forgot about it.
For actual fans of ICO and SotC, this just flat out sucks. This is one of the games I was looking forward to the most on the PS3. And I was still holding out for an eventual PS4 version.
I was prepared to experience an inconsistent, cobbled together game. It's been in development so long and they've had so much internal conflict, I just knew it would be heavily flawed, but I didn't care. These guys create games that feel like nothing else. The atmosphere, the art, the music.. it's like they pay no attention to what other devs out there are doing and it's awesome. This is one of those rare instances that I would put up with a potentially poor game just to take in the rest of the experience.
Heh, oh well. Maybe some day haha
@R4gn4r0k: Only Sony knows for sure. My guess is team ico had a lot of internal conflicts and maybe key employees left the company or were moved to other studios by Sony management. Everyone knows last guardian went through development he'll last gen and it looks like it didn't go through all the way past beta/alpha. Team ico belongs to Japan studios and Japan studios helped other 2nd/3rd party studios make games like from soft with demon souls, the studio responsible for journey and others like loklore.
Look at the bright side guys, now maybe a competent developer will be able to make a game called The Last Guardian.
Well, perhaps it will be coming out under a different name?
I guess, I just don't understand why they would do that- The Last Guardian does have hype and cachet associated with it, it would market itself at least to the core crowd of gamers (who would have been the only people picking it up, just like all other Team ICO games, anyway).
It's become too big to fail at this point. Why deny, deny, deny for so many years unless you were certain the game would come out? What has changed in the last two months that they realized NOW is the time to cancel the game?
It really saddens me to see people rejoice in a potentially great game's troubles just so they can proclaim some sort of victory celebration about one box of plastic being better than another. C'mon man, this news holds benefit no one if true. A loss of a good game is the loss of a good game and ultimately we're all gamers (though sometimes I wonder), regardless of any prepubescent allegiances to corporations or systems one may hold.
It's not dead, it will be announced at next E3.
Sony said recently that the project is still in development. I'm not going to lose hope just because a trademark expired.
You'd think Sony would be more diligent about a trademark that they actually intend to use than letting it expire (again).
It's dead It's been eight years, five since we last saw anything of the game (which was a concept trailer). We've never seen in game footage, Sony hasn't acknowledged the game at a public stage since late 2010, if in spite of all of this, the game somehow is still in development, it is nothing like what we saw, it's probably been retooled beyond recognition, meaning it's not the game we were all hyped for to begin with.
What I am trying to say here is,
When it's dead, it's dead. Anything until then is just speculation. Ueda confirmed the game was still in development just two months ago in Dengeki.
Ans how do you know that Ueda isn't saying that to save his ass after his "Iwata" style response to why the game was absent all last gen?
At this point I think Ueda is dead also. This has gotten out of hand Sony. Its time for tears, its time for truth...............................let it out, let it go Kaz.
The game was never going to sell well to begin with, so why would Sony continue to bleed money into a long-dead IP with no prospect of financial success?
Anyway, perhaps some cows will finally realise that they shouldn't take Sony's press conferences seriously.
This bothers me simply because Ico and Shadow of the Colossus were such unique amazing games and Sony let's them poof ,theres no reward for devs to try anything daring. All they care about is dumbed down movie games and shooters, it's a shock they made Bloodborne. The ps1+2 had such a variety of games compared to the 3, hope not the 4 too. I can see the appeal of PC it's the last system with good variety if genres
