PSP broke into Nintendo's handheld realm when others failed, despite being very expensive. To date it has sold 20 million (DS has about 40 million).

PSOne dethroned nintendo, PS2 broke the dreamcast.

Platstation One, phenominal success; PS2 best selling console, 100 million sold; PS3 sells 1 million in PAL regions (doing better than PSOne, and PS2, respectively). Nuff said.

Futher questions are likely to be most meaningless and should be addressed to this guy.

It lived up to the hyped. It tackled the DS head on and got 1/3 of the market. Nintendo got owned.

Spooky... but unless Sony is planning to hold a gun to my head, they're not going to make me spend my money on their PS3 this fall over an Xbox 360. Too Human, Halo 3, Bioshock, and Blue Dragon aren't magically going to become 360 titles, so that's where my loyalty lies.

You make it sound like Sony's business strategy is to keep making bigger and bigger piles of PS3s in the front of stores, until I have to buy one just to get in the store and buy groceries.

Thats funny considernig The DS is the fastest selling peice of gaming hardware in history they got so owned there:roll:. I think the PSP created its own market and is doing very well there but I dont think its really cutting into nintendos market.

DS is expected to reach 60 million+ sold by march. PSP might reach 30 if lucky 25 is the current estimate.

It's true, Sony always gets their way if we exclude:

  • UMD
  • Mini-Disk
  • A-TRAC
  • BETAMAX
  • The Super CD
  • Micro-DV
  • DAT
  • All those laptops which broke and batteries had to be replaced

And clearly, the stunning success of the PS3 and PSP's ability to sell half as much as it's major competitor can only be considered successes by the rational mind.

It is the savior of handhelds. I don't carry my mp3 player anymore and there's no need for a portable DVD player.

Just like the PS3, it is looking to the future. Attempting to be as console-like as possible while the DS churns out games that are 2 gens ago. It's a great gaming handheld, music player, video player, and it'll be much more.

XD

The PSP has even less than 20% of total market share since the DS has outsold it at a much faster rate as well.

for 20 bucks the DS can do everything the PSP can. and The point of handheld gaming is its not a console. The fact its trying to be a console is why the PSP bombed to everyone but the hardcore sony fan.

Naw. The PSP was hyped to take over Nintendo's spot in the handheld market with it's superior hardware and multi media functions, but failed.

DS webbrowser = $30

DS media player = $30

And guess what? It does both of those things horribly compared to the PSP. And there's the PS1 emulator(which is a legal thing because sony made it) and many other features aswell(not counting the "illegal" things PSP can do). So no.

what the heck are the Micro DV and DAT. and I dont know why minidisc didnt take off because a minidics player>>>a CD player.

Their called failed formats, and their examples of when Sony tried to bring something to the market and it didn't work, ie, they didn't get their way.

To call Sony a company that always gets it's way ignores it has a ridiculously long list of failed formats under it's belt.

Oh, well DAT was an attempt to upgrade cassettes, which failed to take hold outside of niche uses (professional recording).

And Micro DV was some sort of camera format which for some reason failed (I don't know the specifics of this one, I just saw it on a list of Sony's struggling or failed formats).

To Danm_999 threads.

So puts a little bit into investing in new formats. Some work, some don't. MS Stick is really awesome and competing well with SD cards. Mini DV, DVD Camcorders weren't too hot, but Sony is leading the industry with their latest hdd High Definition camcorders.

They have their share of problems too. Kutaragi tried replace VHS recording with DVD recording, but HDD recorders came out just after that time. Sony also didn't embrace MP3 players due to the fact that they didn't want to adhere to the huge piracy market by having mp3 supported products, so that caused their audio market to be slow when they eventually went to MP3.

But they are competiting well in the audio department now. Not like back in the cdplayer days but it's still some presence.

Not doing well is what the GC was. No dev support, sales below expectations. PSP was above expectations. No one expected 1/3 of a Nintendo dominated market.

My girlfriend just bought the Web Browser for the DS, and it is junk. I can't even connect to my wi-fi connection because it uses WPA, which apparently DS doesn't support. Plus Yahoo! doesn't let her sign in as well as a host of other things. However, my PSP doesn't really have an issue in any of these departments.

She ended up giving me her DS browser, she was very disappointed to say the least. I have no idea what to do with it. Maybe they'll release a patch that'll fix these issues in the future. I'll probably just hang onto it.

(edit: Want to point out that I personally have both a DS Lite and a PSP)

Yeh, great ...

Sony doesn't always get their own ... remember how Sony execs said 'the DS is no competition to the PSP which will ultimately dominate in sales' ....

well, compared to the DS, its obviously not doing well. being outsold 2 to 1. Is that what you call doing very well? Its an ok system, but its obviously doing bad against the DS.

Doing well =/= Being dominant in sales.

Not doing well is what the GC was. No dev support, sales below expectations. PSP was above expectations. No one expected 1/3 of a Nintendo dominated market.

Actually Sony flatout sad the PSP was gonna win the handheld war and drive nintendo into the ground. Most gaming forums were banning people for mocking the PSPs chances when it first arrived and were hellbent that the PSP was gonna win.

DS was ruled to be the end of nintendo by many an online forum member

Ah sure. Nintendo flat out said PSP was going to win the handheld war. K I can lie too.

HAHAHAHAHAHA, you think he's lying? And, by the way, of course Nintendo said they'd flat out the PSP, and they have.

People said that about Atari...ever seen the Jaguar?People said that about Nintendo... ever seen the Virtual Boy?
Everyone can fail in the gaming industry.  Don't bank on Sony being on top forever.

NobuoMusicMaker

I'm not saying they aren't competing well, I'm saying Sony do not always have their way in the end, else these initiatives wouldn't have been left on the cutting room floor.

It didn't live up to the hype, so therefore it flopped. This is sw. No props for floppage.

It lived up to the hyped. It tackled the DS head on and got 1/3 of the market. Nintendo got owned.

Huh?? The DS Lite is outselling the PSP 2:1. How is that being owned? The Wii is outselling the PS3 in Japan 8:1. I don't think Nintendo is the company being owned.

LOL

DS webbrowser = $30

DS media player = $30

And guess what? It does both of those things horribly compared to the PSP. And there's the PS1 emulator(which is a legal thing because sony made it) and many other features aswell(not counting the "illegal" things PSP can do). So no.

NobuoMusicMaker

at least you just don't buy them if you don't want them. the psp forces those things down your throat whether you want it or not.

Actually the PSP offers them for free. The price of the console just covers the standard they are setting up for handhelds.

Yes, they are free, but unfortunately both are terrible. The browser is utter crap.
