M/kb are fine for very slow paced games, but when the action picks up they really show their colors as controller interfaces that were adopted out of necessity rather than the effectiveness of their design as game controllers.

ChubbyGuy40

Explain why Quake, one of the fastest paced games around, is damn near impossible to play with a controller. Controllers are fine for very slow paced games. If they were suited for fast paced, then we'd see a hell of a lot more RTSes on consoles.

Because the gameplay is basically move and shoot, thus not requiring heavy use of the keyboard.

[QUOTE="Ravensmash"]I'd actually argue that's one of their downsides.Velocitas8

Aside from variable move speed (which isn't very useful), any perceived "downsides" (relative to analog sticks) can be proven wrong with enough practice. No matter how good you get with analog sticks, however, its limitations will remain.

What? Play a game like Splinter Cell and tell me variable move speed isn't useful. Gamepads destroy keyboards for everything but RTSs and RPGs/MMOs with a lot of hotkeys. The mouse is a different story.

In Splinter Cell, my mouse wheel changes movement speed. In GTA IV, you've got to hold down x to move quicker. There are ways around the lack of analog movement, but some bucket head developers can't even utilize it, like the case with GTA IV.

To be competitive in Quake you have to bind all weaps to separate hotkeys and be able to press them without losing look or movement. You cant change weaps, jump or even reload in most console games without losing movement or look ability. In COD with a controller you have to choose between quick access to crouch or knife, cant have both with the limited buttons of a controller. You can have quick access to both with m/kb. M/kb pwn contollers when it comes to mp.

Every button on a controller is a quick access button, as opposed to a keyboard, which can have commands spread all over it. The keyboard is the clumsiest controller I've ever used. Maybe I could get used to it, but I can't imagine ever feelling like I need to when I have consoles and controllers.

Lol wut? In pc COD I have my pinky resting on crouch and my right middle mouse tilt for knife. Thumb rests on jump. Thats what quick access is son. Having to take your thumb off the look stick to crouch/prone is pathetic. In Cod I can jump and turn at the same time, reload and turn at the same time, crouch and turn at the same time, crouch and knife at the same time. Cant do any of that on a controller.

No thanks, the PS3 has always supported regular usb KB/M's, I'll just stick with those and save the $130.

[QUOTE="KC_Hokie"]

Looks awful:

hiryu3

also looks fake. It doesn't follow the Sony brand of design especially with the PS3. Look at the home button. It looks like a house and a flame.

The home button has the PS insignia. What are you looking at?

Wait from that article it seems it will only support games that sony and devs choose.

NoodleFighter
Yeah, that's how it's going to work. And it will probably never get used. Which is strange because UT3 had this option on the PS3, this isn't new is it?

Tell you what, load up xpadder on your PC and play against some counter-strike people with your controller. Then tell us the keyboard is clumsy.

RTS games are usually quite fast paced. MMO games are also quite fast paced in raids and so forth. Logic does not compute.

Far more fast paced than any console shooter will ever be. I'm not even talking about competitive SC...
