Sony Claims 14 Million PSN Accounts

Seems pretty good for them though it is a free service I would guess they are making some cash from DL games and such. Maybe these forthcoming new releases will make a big splash - sounds like they are counting on it.

Sony has claimed that the number of PlayStation Network online accounts has risen to 14 million worldwide - more than the number of subscribers to Xbox Live.

Writing on PlayStation's official blog,, Sony senior marketing manager John Koller claimed that 273 million pieces of content had been downloaded via the service, which covers both the PSP and PlayStation 3 formats.

In June, Sony revealed that the total number of active PlayStation Network accounts stood at over 9.8 million, suggesting a rapid increase in numbers over the last few months. The last figure for Xbox Live was given in May as 12 million, although it is unclear whether this includes both free Silver accounts and paid-for Gold accounts.

While commemorating the second anniversary of the PS3 in the U.S., Koller emphasized that there were now close to 17 million PS3 consoles sold worldwide - with U.S. sales up 100 percent from the previous year. Software sales for the format have tripled in the same period.

Discussing the future of the PS3 over the next twelve months Koller singled out Killzone 2, Sucker Punch's inFamousand the launch of PlayStation Home's open beta as key forthcoming releases.

Yes, it's a known fact that every XBOX is equipped with up to 3 months(3 Seperate users, one month free) of FREE XBOX LIVE when you create a new membership, lulz.

Can't a guy question anything anymore without getting posters razzed up. Yeah, it may be good news, but it's interesting they way it's worded.

It's like that artticle where the author stated 3-5 hours, then stated 5-6 hours in his own article. Maybe I have an eye for the quirky, but I may as well mention it. It's all in good fun, I don't take it seriously.

We are all brothers anyways, gaming souls united because of our passion, and sometimes users forget that. Next time you go to the market, look around, you won't find the kinds of folk there as here, and that's grounds for joy, I say. :)

I have 2 XBOX LIVE accounts, because I have Two Xbox 360's.

The PS3 allowed me to make the same account on both my PS3's, so no need for a second account.

Anyways, I dont think it's surprising since every person that bought a PS3 would've signed on in PSN cuz it's free and no hassle.

most people have multiple accounts just like XBL. I have 3 accounts for both. (EU, US, JP)
