Sony creating a list of Crowdfunding Projects to Help launch

With the massive success that Shenmue 3 has received at Kickstarter ( entering records for being the fastest funded game on kickstarter) looks like that was just the start for Sony and are interested in bringing a lot of games to live if fans want to.

In an interview with Engadget, Sony's Shuhei Yoshida discussed how the announcement of Shenmue 3 and its Kickstarter came to take place at Sony's E3 press conference. Shenmue creator Yu Suzuki managed to convince SEGA to allow the project to be Kickstarted. Because Sony liked the project, their third-party relations team made the deal to launch the Kickstarter at the conference. Engadget then asked if there are any more cult titles Sony plans to help with crowdfunding. A PR representative responded, saying that "they're building a list."

This sounds like what Valve is trying to do with their games, they eventually don't even want to create content for their games anymore, they want the community to create everything and sell it with Valve getting an absurd cut from the profits.

More like they're gauging the market and building hype for risky titles. Shenmue 3 won't be made on the Kickstarter budget alone.

Present me the list Sony and provide reputable names behind them.

Sony is a major publisher and console maker. they should not be using kickstarter for anything. period. If MS asked for $2 million to make the next Age of Empires game the internet would burn their HQ down. Same if Nintendo asked for money to make a new Metroid Prime.

We probably wouldn't be getting Shenmue 3 without kickstarter, I like this idea.

@mems_1224: I agree thtat it's kind of weak, but I'm happy to see Shenmue 3 get made and it's pretty clear that the game was never going to be made through traditional means. I expect Sony wanted Yo Suzuki to prove that there was still interest. Publishers don't tend to have faith in the opinion of enthusiastic fans on fora.

Shoot, why not, its less money Sony has to spend. And with the money problems they are having now, it would be smart to ask for help.

I don't mind paying for a game that I want as long as it's good and lives up to the hype. Consider Sony a contract worker for the fans. We call the shots and they do the legwork and they get paid.

If they put Dark Cloud 3 on there and I see they have a talented staff with a good video of what the game will be like then I'm down to put money on it. They should only use this for older fan service Ips. As for new or current Ips they should be using their own money.

Now the games we all want have a chance to come out, the sequels we all want have a chance to live by proving to them that there is a fanbase around. It helps the company decide which games get developed thanks to the fans/gamers rather than having shareholders decide which games we need to play.

This reduces risk.

Sony isn't exactly in the best state financially right now and the Kickstarter was to see if there is interest. After the success they decided to fund it. You are not getting a Shenmue 3 without Sony so be grateful.

This should be kept out of KS. NOw console hype infected tactics where, unless you have big marketing, smaller projects like Umbra will have a hard time competing.

One guy does something good, others start to abuse the service... Game industry in a nutshell. Why don't they fund these projects themselves? Seems like they want us to take care of everything and take all the credit for themselves.

Kickstarter was made for independent studios, not big corporations that are capable of funding games... Seems like everyone wants to make money these days without taking any risks or hardly doing any work. Pathetic.

And it's funny that some people say "Lol kickstarter games" but as soon as it's Sony "Brilliant idea". But I'm not surprised by this hypocrisy.

So.. Sony likes to not pay for games to be made. And wants us to pay for that instead. Have fun with that Sony, but I'll be giving money to a real gaming company instead.

I think it's great that Sony is using their influence to help fund these games. It's not like they are doing it to fund any games, these are some of the most talked about titles (Shenmue) to some gamers. I tip my hat to them and I hope these games turn out well .

Shenmue 3 is a different case. Very expensive game that didn't actually sell enough. So if this gets Shenmue 3 made all the better. It wouldn't get off the ground without it. But since the interest is obviously there......the game can now be made. Win for all.

No. That's why Sony is backing the rest of the project. They were gaging fan interest and seeing if we would put our money where our mouth is.

KS money =/= sales volume. Star Citizen has a massive 80M+ in funding, but less than 1 million backers.

But my point is about using KS has a measuring tool. Do a crowfunding on your own site and let small studios have KS. I mean, if CIG can set it up even before their ks camapaign, i'm sure Sony isn't incompetant to do it.

You can laugh at Capcom all you want, but without them, your system has no fighting game. Capcom can publish at a very high level, they also have a solid track record. Sony on the other hand has a horrible track record when it comes to publishing games.
