This is stupid.
Hope nobody else that has money will do that

I don't like this and knew Shenmue would lead to something like this. but fan boys have their heads shoved so far up their u know what that they will love any thing Sony does because " Sony loves them." The hell I buy a PS4 if I now have to fund and then purchase the games.
Are you being forced to fund the game? Don't be overly dramatic. Hell if MS had announced this....I'd be getting an X1 yesterday. It's not a bad idea to use kickstarter to generate interest.

I am not i just dont want any and every developer coming out and saying u want this then gives us a few mill to show u love us. all it takes is one for it to snowball

I don't think that will happen...but if and when it does you know how you stop it? Don't give them money. Consumers have more power than you think.

I hope this doesn't become a trend next thing you know Microsoft and Sony will make a tradition out of announcing kickstarter/crowdfunding campaigns for exclusives they moneyhatted just enough to not be on other platforms at E3, Gamescom and other gaming events.

I dont plan on giving any kick starter money but here is to hoping we do keep the power.
@mesome713: Capcom or Activision? Please tell me this is Sarcasm?
If it wasn't for Sony there would be no SFV!
lol, no sir, just cause they spent BIG money to fund Capcom doesnt mean they needed them. Nintendo would have paid SFV big money also. Street Fighter dont need Sony, Sony needs them.
I think its a genius ideal, its proves that we dont need Sony at all. All they are is a publisher and a weak one at that, they can easily be replace by Kickstarter and a more trustworthy Publisher like Capcom or Activision etc.

a more trustworthy Publisher like Capcom or Activision etc.
trustworthy Publisher like Capcom.
You can laugh at Capcom all you want, but without them, your system has no fighting game. Capcom can publish at a very high level, they also have a solid track record. Sony on the other hand has a horrible track record when it comes to publishing games.
Without Sony funding it, there'd be no Street Fighter V. Try again.
Again, thats the biggest joke ive probably ever heard on this site.
@randyoh:
I think that was demonstrated two years ago with MS. They listened. And I don't plan on it either. I will buy the games though if they appeal to me. Which is support in and of itself.
This is a good thing for third party devs wanting to take a risk with unsuccessful franchises. It not like we will be funding Sony's first party studios.
Shenmue 3 done so well because I was on the Sony stage and it's a multi-plat game, it wouldn't have done as well if it was a PS4 exclusive.
I hope this is something good from Sony and not some fleecing attempt to get first party games funded for them. Kickstarter was never intended as a exploitation tools for the big companies.
@mesome713: Hahaha really? Nintendo wouldn't pay a penny for SFV. You know why? Because it would sell like shit on the Wii U. You are delusional.
I agree with that, no way can it compete with Smash bros. And now that Smash Bros has Ryu, we dont really need it. Plus we have Tatsunoko vs Capcom, again, Nintendo doesnt need SF 5, Sony does.
@finalstar2007: Could have just did a survey to get your answer. Taking gamers money to fund the product and then ask them to pay for the game that they funded is kind of nuts don't you think?
You know it's their choice and they are aware of that?
Only way I see it acceptable for a big corporation like Sony is make the kickstarted game free-to-play and make money selling cosmetic stuff within the game.
But no it is allbout increasing their pockets same applies to all corporations including the country of USA which is basically another corporation.
I can understand that way of looking at it but it doesn't guarantee the game will be made. yea its a way of showing their is interest but at the same time it can still be a small number of people funding compared to the millions of copies they hope to sell for it to be worth Sony funding part of it as well as developers. look at Star Citizen you have multiple people with 20k,15k,10k,5k donations. I still don't like this. A simple survey is good enough. Just wait for the dlc kickstarts. Yaaaay!
I'm reminded of Snakes on a Plane. The internet swore it was the movie they wanted to see then no one showed up the day it was released in theaters.
Nothing wrong with putting your money where your mouth is.
Ah Snakes on a Plane, bringing up some old memories there, Bread.
I don't get the issue, a couple of million dollars is a tenth of even the most low budget titles (last i heard Beyond Two Souls was $27m and was considered a cheap title to produce), this is pittance in the grand scheme of game development, it's hardly like they're paying for the entire game off the gamer's backs. It's quite obviously being used as proof that the game will be purchased by consumers to secure publisher funding and to get additional features they can't get funded paid for. If a dev can't get the funding to make a game/include all the features they want without kickstarter then where's the problem? Since the franchise has been sat around it's not like it's a property that had publishers baying to fund it and those that do contribute a decent amount get the game anyway and we get to prove titles that we want have the buyers to make them viable.
Honestly i have no doubt that Shenmue 3 wasn't getting made without a kickstarter, the originals didn't sell particularly well and they had a more recent HD release. I highly doubt any publisher was touching the franchise without more proof it would sell.
Once again System Wars has a good old whine and a moan about how other people spend their money. Personally if kickstarter can revive my favourite franchises that are currently dead then signing me up.

What extra are they pocketing? This point is only valid if they run off with the money without producing the game. If not then all that is different is that the consumers paid for the game earlier given all but the smallest contributor's get the game as part of their payment. Very similar to people who pre-order.
Also why should a portion of people who being willing to pay for the game's potential development mean the game should be free to play? I don't get the logic there.
Lol. No. The decrepit bastard stood up there and begged while he was being broadcast to millions. Not every Kickstarter receives this level of attention.
Meanwhile Microsoft is making a list of studios and games to buy.
so sony wants gamers to fund their games for them now? lmfao
More like they're gauging the market and building hype for risky titles. Shenmue 3 won't be made on the Kickstarter budget alone.
Sony is a major publisher and console maker. they should not be using kickstarter for anything. period. If MS asked for $2 million to make the next Age of Empires game the internet would burn their HQ down. Same if Nintendo asked for money to make a new Metroid Prime.
Not a good example because Sony does not "own" Shenmue and the kickstarter money has nothing at all to do with Sony. All Sony did is provide some stage time - which both Sony and MS do all the time for 3rd parties. For your examples to be apples to apples, it would have to be Sony going to kickstarter to fund a new Uncharted or Killzone game. That would be weak, but what Sony did was actually pretty cool.

So far, the vast majority of people who have backed the game on kickstarter are receiving the game.
I think this is MORE than OK.. I think its GREAT. I could easily submit a list of 20 games I would drop over $100 on... maybe even $200-$300 or more. I think of all the games I have bought over the years and then realize that only a handful of those did I really enjoy all the way through. I would gladly pay 4 or 5 times the amount for a game to make a comeback. SOCOM, Breath of Fire, Fear Effect, etc. This could get fun... I REALLY hope they utilize this to their advantage. AAA games (or not even that) cost way to much to make these days. If we help fund it then we will see the games we never thought would return. I am all for this. Haters will hate, but will STILL buy the games after they release... even if hey don't support the kickstarters.
Funny how everyone seems to hate on certain devs/publishers for regurgitating sequels...and whining how there is not enough new IPS...
Then here is another sequel and its suddenly OK?...cause its by Sony? Holy shit its even on a KICKSTARTER too..."YES BRILLIANT!"...they dont deserve to be on KS..what the hell guys...
Maybe MS and Sony should kickstart their next-gen consoles since you pathetic console gamers seems to have no integrity at all.

That's awfully hyperbolic.
Investing in Kickstarter projects is more analogous to a second party endeavor. Not a first party.
@deadline-zero0: Shenmue 1 and 2 cost an at the time record breaking $90 million to develop and obviously did not make that money back which hurt Sega financially. Do you really think the $2 million that the kickstarter was asking for would cover the costs of Shenmue 3's development 14 years later and God knows how much dev cost difference?
No. That's why Sony is backing the rest of the project. They were gaging fan interest and seeing if we would put our money where our mouth is.
A problem with that theory is that most of the die-hard fans have now bought the game, and nobody else has ever particularly cared about Shenmue. In a way, the game has hit peak sales before it even gets properly funded...so Sony would be crazy to put much more money into the project.
Hell, hype for the game has already sharply dropped:
It'll have a second (lower) peak in the last 48 hours, but those numbers aren't exactly encouraging a $90 million investment.
Being multiplat helps a lot...but could a budget-produced sequel to a long-dead, financially catastrophic series hit a million sales when it releases? It'll be interesting to find out.
One game doing this stands out, having lots more do it not so much.
I think this is less to do with funding the games, and just the same less to do with gauging consumer hype and interest, rather they knows there's some kind of underlying cult fervor, and they're exploiting that I think. I'm suspicious most this stuff is corporate backed even on the crowd funding side, but the money funneled through crowdfunding as a means to make people think it's organic community interest. And there'd be good reason to want to do that, as people are more receptive when people recognize or perceive community interest over corporate driven agenda.

Well I'll be damned, and here I thought Sony had a gun to their head.
