Shenmue 3 is a different case. Very expensive game that didn't actually sell enough. So if this gets Shenmue 3 made all the better. It wouldn't get off the ground without it. But since the interest is obviously there......the game can now be made. Win for all.

With the massive success that Shenmue 3 has received at Kickstarter ( entering records for being the fastest funded game on kickstarter) looks like that was just the start for Sony and are interested in bringing a lot of games to live if fans want to.

Shenmue creator Yu Suzuki managed to convince SEGA to allow the project to be Kickstarted. Because Sony liked the project, their third-party relations team made the deal to launch the Kickstarter at the conference. Engadget then asked if there are any more cult titles Sony plans to help with crowdfunding. A PR representative responded, saying that "they're building a list."

I think its a genius ideal, its proves that we dont need Sony at all. All they are is a publisher and a weak one at that, they can easily be replace by Kickstarter and a more trustworthy Publisher like Capcom or Activision etc.

You can laugh at Capcom all you want, but without them, your system has no fighting game. Capcom can publish at a very high level, they also have a solid track record. Sony on the other hand has a horrible track record when it comes to publishing games.

It's an interesting take and a safe way to develop AAA games that are just incredibly niche, dead franchises, and literal fanboy dream games.
Just know that if you back it, be sure you don't own JUST an Xbone, because you know full well it isn't releasing on it. All these ventures will be PS4 and PC.

Sony is a major publisher and console maker. they should not be using kickstarter for anything. period. If MS asked for $2 million to make the next Age of Empires game the internet would burn their HQ down. Same if Nintendo asked for money to make a new Metroid Prime.

Ha that is true. Just have to let them learn then i guess. Because all this did was set unreal expectations for the hardcore fan base of Shenmue. The people they are supposedly making the game for and not to turn a profit because sony is a multi billion dollar company that has to keep investors happy. Oh well heres to hoping this doesnt get out of hand like i fear.

Oh yes that 2 million dollar kickstarter money gonna really make a dent in the cost to develop Shenmue 3...lmao. I hardly think that will be enough to feed and provide coffee for the development staff for the next few years. only cost 99 mill to create the original one in 1999.
