Poll Sony has PlayStation Experience. Nintendo has Nintendo Direct. Should Microsoft Have Their Own Event? (10 votes)

Yes 90%
No 50%

With Sony's recent announcement that they will be holding the PlayStation Experience annually, it seems that they, too, have now decided that they want to control their messaging, by delivering information directly to consumers, and by spreading it out. It shows they have enough confidence in their output that they can hold multiple events throughout the year.

Nintendo, of course, already does this, with about 5-6 Nintendo Direct broadcasts held every year, which are great for new game reveals, information on how announced upcoming games are coming along, and generally, at delivering the message directly to their customers.

But what about Microsoft? Microsoft does not have its own event yet. They used to, back in the day, X0 (and it was awesome, just like Space World), but they don't hold them any more. Do you think they should? Should they do it Sony's way, with one big event a year, or Nintendo's way, with multiple, relatively smaller webcasts? Or something new entirely? Maybe a combination of both?

The next question is, can they do something like this at all? Microsoft has the smallest and weakest first party- any event by them would be more reliant on third party games, and third parties already reveal games and information at their own schedule, so would they have much new stuff to show at all?

What do you think? Should Microsoft have its own event(s), or is doubling down on E3 wiser?

No....Nintendo Direct at least gives us information in place of them having big conferences. If MS did it, it would just be another Play Station experience. Lots of hype, very little substance.

Yes. Would be pretty cool IMO! E3, Gamescom and TGS would kinda go to shit (unless EA, Ubi, Acti and the rest of the gang started taking he main stage at those events) but it would be fun! Plus all 3 would have a much greater degree of flexibility to showcase their stuff and give it more media attention.

Also, shorter title chaz. Just sayin' >.>

I thought we have internet.

You want to know the amazing thing about PlayStation Experience and Nintendo Direct? They are streamed! Over the internet! And they are accompanied by real time digital sales and release of demos! Also over the internet!

A much more effective use of the internet than what Microsoft is doing. Which is nothing, whereas I want them to do something.

This. The PSX so far si just another con. with a PS swing.

****. Apparently there was suppose to be a mistery game announcement just now (literally), and it turns out to be Shovel Knight PS4 gameplay. What a fucking waste

PSX and Nintendo Direct aren't the same things. PSX is an actual even like E3 whereas Nintendo Directs are just YouTube videos giving updates on games. I think I actually prefer Nintendo Directs though since they happen more frequently than once a year.

Regardless, I think it would be nice for Microsoft to do something like these. Having one big yearly event to celebrate Xbox, or just putting out update videos every once in a while (or better yet both).

Since Shovel Knight turned out to be the mistery game in Day 2, after it was announced on day 1, i'd say E3 and Gamescom is definitely enough for Sony

They are two different approaches to the same concept- the concept of the company controlling its messaging, the concept of the company communicating directly with its fanbase, the concept of the company spreading out its announcements instead of concentrating them. However, I agree, as you said, they are two very different ways of doing the same thing. Personally, I too prefer Direct, because it's more regular, but I am fine with a PlayStation Experience annual gala as well.

Just to be clear, Sony never teased a major announcement for today. They had a slot in their schedule that was titled 'To Be Announced,' presumably to maintain secrecy of a game that was unannounced until yesterday, but that was it. GAF just saw that, did its thing, and went wild with it. That is the reason for the disappointment.

I'm probably going to piss a ton of people off in this thread when I say this, and I honestly mean it in the most objective manner possible, but I think it needs to be asked/said. Doesn't Microsoft cater more to a more mainstream audience of gamer that isn't going to watch these type of shows? They play call of cuty, Halo, Fifa, Forza, Madden Etc. That's not a bad thing per se. I'm not judging. But I don't think that Microsoft would benefit as much from holding one of these shows as Sony or Nintendo. Besides Microsoft is really good at advertising in other ways to reach their target audeience.

No, if they don't have thing ready then it would hurt more than help. They have a year between E3s as it is, and They have a much smaller first party; it would be a struggle to get this kind of thing going. Besides, the main-streamers wouldn't watch and that's their target audience.

Also, why should they follow other companies shows? Unless they have something of merit, forcing a show would be a waste of money and time.

Microsoft actually had their own thing a while back.

I Remember watching Major Nelson give out a Weekly update of what's new and upcoming on Xbox Live when I played my 360. Also Playstation Experience and Nintendo Direct aren't comparable.

I think Sony experience won't be as big every year this year was an exception because of the 20th anniversary but next year probably it will be small.

I honestly don't even think Sony needs the PSX. This really wasn't so much about getting info out about their games as much as it was to keep the hype train rolling. If they really wanted to spread the message about their games, they could have easily done something like Nintendo Direct, and it would save them money. This was more about keeping people interested in PlayStation itself, and outside of lip service had little to do with the celebration with fans as they claimed it was.

I would like to see one and see what games are int he works and updates on previously announced games. It keeps the platform fresh and interesting.

Only thing that is a drawback is early announcements of games lead to long waits, like Chronicles X and Quantum Break or even worse TLLG, DNF, ect.

Perhaps they should get rid of Region Locking before before they decide to beam lies straight to our consoles.

Nintendo and Sony have these events because of their massive 1st party studios.

Unless they invest / open more studios, E3 and Gamescon would be more suitable for what Microsoft offers on a yearly basis.

They will next year like they always do. Why should they show them now and have gamers waiting and waiting like Sony does. They show them when the games are getting close to launching or to introduce a new IP.

I'm not talking about the retail stuff like PAL and NTSC. Microsoft region locks Digital Titles on all their platforms.
