This comes courtesy of this job listing, which is recruiting a software engineer to build a game for their next generation system, specifically for R&D purposes. The relevant part of the listing:

We have an exciting opportunity at Sony Computer Entertainment of America (PlayStation). We seek a senior game programmer to assist us in developing a game used for R&D purposes related to our next generation gaming system. For someone passionate about gaming this is a very rare opportunity. After reviewing the below job profile, if this is you, please apply!

I find this very pleasing. Last generation dragged on for far too long, and I never want a repeat of that. It is good to see that, while stragglers like Nintendo are understandably keen to move on to the next generation and start over, even the PS4, which is the current leader, is willing to not stay stuck on this generation for too long.

the masses still haven't embraced the current next gen systems and were almost 3 years in

meanwhile the masses all bought nes/snes and ps1 and stuff right when those things came out and got full value from day one

now is not the time to move ahead they need to get ppl in those seats for the next gen they have now were in the next gen now and they need to act like it much more imo

tooting next gen systems when were 3 years in with no games is not gonna look good in the mass public and the masses its very bad actually

This is pretty normal. It's such a long process to work out a console that is going to last you quite a lot of years. Takes time and effort.

I'd rather have a long gen than a short gen, i for one dont wanna dish out $400 on a console every 4-5 years. It's bad enough that this gen has been pretty lackluster except for maybe 3-4 games (so far).

Bloodborne, Bayonetta 2, Mario Kart 8

yah bloodborne is good but is it better than dark souls 1 or stuff on PC? probably not so its not a killer app imo

the game would run an look better on pc and i dunoo if bloodborne is a next gen game it looks like dark souls maxed out on pc at only 30 fps to me

so no i dunno if it is next gen and mario kart 8 and bayonetta 2 could run on 360/ps3 so those don't count as next gen hardware wise

so only next gen killer app is bloodborne and like i said it looks like PC dark souls it doesn't look next gen

Since a generation applies to time of release, not technical power, Mario Kart 8 and Bayonetta 2 are considered current generation games. I question Bayonetta 2 as a "killer-app" as it did not sell that many copies regardless of the high reviews it received.

Smart. Console generations should only be 4-5 years. Just make sure the console is profitable at launch. Then make sure that the system has BC since you finally got on a architecture you can agree with and even fans of the previous gen can't complain about moving on.

It's not like the PS5 is coming out tomorrow.

Consoles take years to develop.

Isn't it normal to start development of Consoles soon after the launch of current Consoles? If current gen is going to be shorter then that's great news but I still don't expect them to touch that subject since PS4 is selling so well and they are making profit from its sales this time around. I don't expect new Consoles until they've all they money they could get from current Consoles. I expect new Consoles after 2020.

I guess that is normal.. Sony is doing well with PS4 so it makes sense to continue investing on the Playstation brand.

However I don't think we'll get any new console from Sony before 2018

As others have said I don't think this really means all that much. I guess Sony/MS pretty much always have people thinking on what the next thing will be. One question for these researchers is probably "when?", don't think that has been decided yet.

From what I've understood PC-gaming will make a fairly significant leap in the near future, so that may play a role. Also VR which is very power hungry. Depending on its success and how much behind Morpheus is I think that may also affect when next gen arrives.

That's not what this means at all. R&D for a next generation console typically begins very shortly after a current consoles release. In fact this should have happened at the beginning of 2014. Bit of a late start actually.

Both MS, Sony and Nintendo began R&D for their current consoles, soon after their previous consoles released.

I agree and in my opinion, I'd want to spend that much every 5 years even less now as the hardware gap and generational leap would be even smaller than the current one.

Off topic: I'm curious to see if they will show anything new about Morpheus during e3.

Last gen did last too long, but i don't want to see new consoles before 2018. 5 years sound perfect for a generation to last, and current consoles are starting to show impressive visuals....and it can only get better.

I can't expect it will be a long development process. Talk to AMD, pick out a new APU, decide on whether or not to upgrade the GDDR5, and call it a day. I wouldn't be shocked if they hammer it out in a day. Thanks to them going x86 and PC parts this should be a relatively simple process.

@ProtossX: Nonsense. Console gamers will love it because it will say PlayStation on the box. That means to them that its a console. They will line up and buy it regardless. They bought PS4 and are happy with it. If Sony does the same thing that they've done for years they will be fine.

Damn, X1 winning April NPD musta made them panic :o eh, I suppose I can't blame them, X1 isn't even close to hitting it's stride yet and it's already a Monster Box kicking ass and taking names. After E3, Sony is certain to speed up production on getting their new system out before it's too late. :P.

Somewhat expected. Personally, and assuming things remain as is, I'm more curious to see how MS will act. Otherwise Ninty and Sony are following a predictable trajectory given the events so far (though whatever Ninty may present may be the exact opposite of predictable).

R+D = "we're at the point where we're sitting around a table trying to figure out what to do..."

I'd like a shorter generation this time around, but I'm not holding my breath.

Lets not forget the PS3 and Xbox 360 generation was extended by Kinect/Move. If those peripherals never released we may have seen PS4/Xbox One a couple of years sooner.

Sony, like many others has been working on a VR headset. The PS4 can't run every game at 1080p60 fps. That would make running a VR game a nightmare. To get the most out of these new peripherals we need new hardware.

With any luck, maybe this one won't suck as bad.

You are miss reading is not to the next generation is a this gen game, sony still address the PS4 as their next gen console.

Our next generation gaming system is the PS4.

Alto who knows.

Somewhat expected. Personally, and assuming things remain as is, I'm more curious to see how MS will act. Otherwise Ninty and Sony are following a predictable trajectory given the events so far (though whatever Ninty may present may be the exact opposite of predictable).

I'd assume very quiet, and they're probably going to get a mole into Sony so they can one up them at every corner.

that is disgusting just make your own console and make your own ideas make your own console microsoft needs to stop just trying to copy other companies an do their own thing imo

@ProtossX: Tbh, Sony is by far the worst out of the big three as far as copying ideas goes.

@charizard1605: Is this news? Console manufacturers always start development on the next gen within 2 years of a console launch.
