When it comes to games, Sony is in trouble. Matter of fact, when it comes to the PS3 as a whole, Sony is in real big trouble period.

It's no secret Sony lost sight of what really mattered, the actual games when it comes to a gaming machine. I saw signs of this towards the end of PS2 days, when Sony would refer to the PS2 as a "computer."

Let's break things down just a quick bit:

1) The PS3 currently holds the lowest install base of any next-gen system

2) The PS3 costs the most to develop games for because of complicated and unorthodox hardware

3) The development cycle for a game on the PS3 is the longest because of limited knowledge from devs about Cell/RSX

4) On the software side of things, not only does the PS3 have the least amount of games, it also has the lowest software sales as well. PS3 owners aren't buying enough games.

5) Almost every game on the PS3 has been delayed at some point or another. Its must-own games such as GTAIV, GT5, Socom, MGS4, God of War 3, DMC4, Silent Hill, Ratchet & Clank, UT3, all have seen delays. What's funny is that other features excluding games are also getting delayed. HOME? ¿Donde esta home?

6) PS3 is constantly losing exclusives left and right to other consoles. What do GTAIV, DMC4, Silent Hill, UT3, Alan Wake, Ace Combat 6, Assassin's Creed, Beautiful Katamari, MONSTER HUNTER 3, and a handful of others titles have in common? Oh yea, that's right, lost exclusivity. What makes it worse is that some these games are also being CANNED altogether on the PS3 and are completely gone.

7) Multiplats are generally worse than the 360, a system that is cheaper to begin with.

8 ) Multiplats also release much later on the PS3 because of difficulty porting the game and budget constraints.

9) While PSN is showing improvement, it cannot hold a light to XBOX LIVE. Looks like PS3 owners have to wait till next year for Home as well.

10) The ridiculous amounts of price changes and new SKU's are sure to confuse the HELL out of consumers. The more I think about it, it seems as if Sony intentionally did this to fool consumers. If I'm having a hard time distinguishing between the 20Gb, 40Gb, 60Gb, and 80Gb iterations, imagine what a soccer mom is going to go through this holiday season? I think people will be buying the 40Gb version thinking it has PS2 BC.

11) Sony's decision to include Blu-Ray in the PS3 as standard is one of the riskest moves they could have ever pulled. Part of the reason why I think the PSP has faultered is the whole UMD issue. Didn't Sony learn from BetaMax, UMD, and MiniDisc? Blu-Ray and HD-DVD aren't catching on because there isn't a big enough difference to justify the added cost. VHS to DVD was truly a revolution, not DVD to Blu-Ray.

12) And most importantly....3rd party developers are abandoning the PS3 left and right. Can someone make a list of new games that have been announced for the PS3 from 3rd party developers in the last 5-6 months that were previously not worked on prior to the release of the PS3? The only games the PS3 has to look forward to are the games that have been in developement prior to the launch of the PS3 and now 3rd party devs are panicing because of how much they've spent so far, fearing about low sales. Capcom has abandoned Sony, Ubiosoft isn't too happy...

So what exactly does Sony have that will appeal to devs? Blu-Ray with its big storage capacity?

Wake up cows. The PS3 has potential but right now it's truly swirling down the drain. I honestly can't see any source of salvation for the PS3. Sorry for the long read, I had to get all my points in.

With that all said, I'm still willing to buy a PS3 if that one damn must-own game ever releases for it. I'm no fanboy, I like games. Right now, PS3 has completely dissapointed in that department.

Well I pretty much agree with you..

The only thing I disagree with is number 10.

Core, Premium, Elite, Halo. The 360 also has 4 SKUs, 2 of them added since launch, 3 of them recieved different sized price drops and one soon to be renamed "Arcade".

your points were valid. They were also unoriginal.

Imagine if people started posting only new thoughts on system wars, the board would collapse from lack of topics.

It was originally being developed for the PS3. Prior to the release of the PS3 (before M$ bought the rights), the game was listed as a PS3 exclusive here on GS.com.

Well I pretty much agree with you..

That's a good point. I agree, the 360 is also confusing (this may be why its sales are somewhat sub-par as well.

A good read doesn't necessarily have to be written by an industry insider. Secondly, I'm not a fanboy. Please show me where I came off as being a fanboy in my post, I want quotes.

Again, I would like quotes where I spewed "fanboyism crap." Every single one of my points are valid. I'm not saying the 360 or Wii is without fault, I'm just pointing out where Sony has messed up. The culmination of the facts I posted about are the reason why the PS3 isn't living up to expectations.

For the most part I agree, but I look at it like Sony is experiencing a short-term setback rather then a "never-ending spiral of FAIL". The difference between multi-platform games on 360 and PS3 should be a non-issue sooner then later. The development time will proabably continue to take longer, but thats due to the hardware. This price drop is the first step back in the right direction and if 2008's titles meet expectations...

SergeantSnitch, weren't you a huge cow before?

Anyway, you've got some good points (low software sales, yadda yadda), but where's the proof on PS3 development cycles being longer?

Wait, if you're talking about delays, I just answered my own question.

Sony can turn it around in 2008. The new price cut for the PS3, lots of great games, PSN getting better, Home, yeah I am going to say Sony is save this sinking ship.

Good read and i agree with most of it, and for one i'm a person with 30+ games for the 360 and 2 for the PS3 so that proves a point about attach rates. Although i still think the PS3 will be a success eventually, as it is a great console despite the rubbish job Sony have done thus far and the severe lack of quality titles its a solid hardware platform.

Anyway i've got my 360 and PC to keep me (very) occupied while i wait for my PS3 to get the games it deserves.

1st) PS3 has good games: RFOM, Motorstorm, Dirt, GRAW2, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, RB6V, Warhawk, Heavenly Sword...and all the multiplats that are on the 360 also on the PS3.

2) your opinion does not equal fact, this thread was full of lemming fanboyism.

3) You feel like you need to put down the PS3 to justify that you chose the 360 over the PS3, whatever makes you sleep at night.

4) The price drop is a good thing, and shows Sony is listening, now the PS3 will have more mass appeal due to the new price.

5) Ratchet and Clank and Guitar Hero 3 come out this month, you said the ps3 had no good games?

the games that are not exclusive anymore don't really matter as long as they are still coming to ps3. sony has stopped buying exclusity to focus more on first and second party efforts. as long as the game is on playstation platform it doesn't need to be exclusive. now when you say developers are abanding sony i have to disagree. i have yet to see any developer drop support from sony most of them are just waiting awhile to release their stuff. also some new games off the top of my head that were announced in the last 6 months. disgaea 3, star ocean 4, infamous, rockstar has announced they are working on a newEXCLUSIVE title, and you have capcom who said they are going to really push ps3 next year so yeah...

now i ask you how many new ips has ms and nintendo announced in the last 6 months that are worth mentioning?

when i saw "UT3" was a lost exclusive, i laughed, because unreal tourny was a pc exclusive to begin with.

ps3 is the hardest to develop for, no doubt.

yet who is denying that some of the best games on sonys side "gt5, mgs4, tekken" won't turn the tide. Im sure even fanboys once played some of these games and know they will be good, some will be system sellers.

its all stuff weve heard before. sony is off to a slow start.yes. yet,i think the big games and their general reception are going to decide the ps3's fate.

probably shouldn't label your own posts as "good read" just cos it can come off as a little arrogant.. but anyway, i pretty much agree with you, the ps3 has plenty of potential, but they just isn't anything available that justifies its price, even the new "low" price.. £300 is a lot of money to play a bunch of half-assed games

and since i've got a 360 and wii, there isn't really any compelling reason to buy a ps3, ..

mgs4 and ff13 are imo, the only games of interest, but i don't care how good there are, i aint gonna buy a console for 2 games.

so you say Sony is in a never ending spiral of fail, and then base it on their poorest performer?

Forget the fact that the PSP is the biggest success anyone has ever had at taking on nintendo for the handheld market, and has 5 AAA games and countless AA titles.

Forget that Sony released THE most successful console of all time and is still releasing great games for it, with 2 AA and aat least 13 AA titles within the last 12 months.

Sony may well not be releasing the right games on the PS3, but they damn sure havent lost their knack for it all across the board.

[QUOTE="SergeantSnitch"]

SergeantSnitch

This is what sergeantsnitch said in summary: "i hate the PS3 because i'm a 360/wii/pc fanboy"

but anyway he made some point and some of his statements are actually true.

So are you just complaining to complain? Trying to change the hearts and minds of people with a list full of hypothetical musings? If you really want to complain and have someone, that matters, listen and do something about it, post on the playstation dev blog. Those guys have been coming through for us month after month with system updates and content on the store. They actually listen! So, go post there. GS usersare tired of listening to the unfounded rhetoric.

I stopped reading after this -

GTAIV was never a PS3 exclusive , and why do you have UT3 there? oh and AC was an xbox exclusive in the first place it was called Project Assassin back then

You FAIL fanboy

:( Don't say (Good Read) unless, it IS a good read, not a bunch of fanboyism crap.

Bluestorm-Kalas

I own a PS3, and it was a read read, especially because it wasn't fanboyism, but good arguments.

In other words Sony SUCKS.

I'm still gonna have to play MGS4 on the PS3

But afterwards I hope they burn in hell.
