This is already coming from the main man Howard Stringer. He is already calling Blu-ray a stalemate. And if he is saying this already Sony knows they are in trouble if they are already openly starting to spin control Blu-Ray Especially coming from the MAIN COWS MOUTH.

Either that or Howard knows something and is trying to get himself CANNED and get clear of this mess Sony is in.

HD-DVD is just selling at such low prices compared to Blu-Ray it will be hard for BR to compete. Most customers are not interested in the whole BR Vs HD-DVD so they just buy the product that cost less.

On Blu-ray, he said if Sony's format lost the war to HD DVD, then Sony would only have to change the hard drive for its PlayStation, but the loss would not hurt Sony beyond that. He signaled that he would have preferred to integrate the two formats if he could travel back in time, but then remarked that the format war was "all about saving face." He believed Microsoft supports HD DVD because Blu-Ray's stronger anti-piracy protection is probably not in Microsoft's interest. He cited the competition between PS3 and Xbox 360 as a likely sub-plot behind Microsoft's motivation to support HD DVD.

Especialy if Sony does loose with blu-Ray and MS release the new HD-DVD 360 it's GAME OVER for everything. It would be the biggest kick in Sony's **** in there company's history.

And it's not such a stretch to think this could be in the prlimenary stages of happening.

As far as the format wars are concerned, I can care less about the price of the player. I will only buy the player as often as it breaks down, which I hope never (so just 1). I will be buying many discs although. So the winning side is best determined on who can make their format more affordable than DVD first and with a good time until the other party does too.

Becuase they could be loosing more then just a Format war they could lose the Game War. At that was there bread and butter.

today's article. Yea, when Stringer isn't convinced, it's time for alarm. HD-DVD players are selling like hotcakes, sparked by that $99 weekend. They moved at least 100,000 HD-DVD players last week.

I mean seriously.

Simple answer: it's the anthesis of what Sony is offering. anything Sony made = bad.

But not only that...the company also supposed that the 360 would be inferior specifically because it didn't have Blu-Ray + Cell.

Therefore, anything that constitutes a blow to either Blu-Ray or Cell = good.

It doesn't matter how much marketing money they spend now. They have to drop the prices. Either the stand-alones or the PS3 will have to plummet in price to compete.

You need to understand that

Thing is most numbers include PS3. It is best to include only stand alone players because not every PS3 was bought for BR or even used for BR. I know PS3 users hate doing that because it hurts their argument.

well this really has nothign to do with games.

but..AWWWWWW CRAP!!. a stalemate is the worst possible scenario for the consumer here. why did this war have to be brought to the market? why couldnt HD-DVD and Blu-ray guys just put their heads together and get this crap sorted before bringing the tech to market. both platforms surviving would be an absolute disaster here.

the war continues, the consumer continues to loose out. competing standards for movies is completly unnacceptable. this needs sorting and it needs sorting fast.

Even if it was true it doesn't mean anything, it's first to mass market that counts. That was Paramount's argument for going HD-DVD exclusive, it will reach mass market price first.

blu-ray isn't owned by sony guys, sony only owns most of the pressing plants, blu-ray is owned by a lot of companies (it's a joint venture between Hitachi, LG, Panasonic, Pioneer, Philips, Samsung, Sony, and Thomson) and they have most of the studios for exclusive title releases... HD-DVD is pretty much just toshiba, the $100 HD-DVD players are mark-downs to get rid of current player stocks so they can release the new model (and to flood the market with hd-dvd players), new ones won't be $100... so if you're planning on going HD-DVD go now because the prices will go back up to $300-$400 per player

HD-DVD backed hardware-wise by Toshiba, HP, NEC, and Microsoft

it's backed exclusively by Universal studios, Paramount (including Dreamworks), Weinstein and First Look, while also backed non-exclusively by Warner Bros., New Line Cinema, HBO, Image Entertainment (Discovery), Magnolia Pictures, Brentwood home video, Ryko, and Goldhill entertainment, also has a strong presense in Europe

Blu-Ray is backed hardware-wise by Sony, Apple, Dell, Panasonic, Samsung, LG, HP, Pioneer, Asus/AsusTek, Hitachi, Philips, and Sharp

blu-ray is backed exclusively by Sony (of course), MGM, Disney, 20th Century Fox, and Lionsgate, in europe many of these titles are released via hd-dvd by companies like Studio Canal though blu-ray is multi-regional so Buena Vista often releases blu-ray in Europe, it's also backed non-exclusively by Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema

also, both sides have no restrictions on pornography, despite blu-ray backers not endorsing it publicly

for the most part both sides have been at a stalemate despite blu-ray edging more in recent months, i think people just want a winner and couldn't care less who wins

of course, you'll always have the fanboys who think they have any impact on consumer electronics, but that's their own delusion

for the most part, this whole generation of formats could go the way of laserdisc

For those that care, Transformers did outsell Spiderman 3 launch week:

http://www.dvdtown.com/news/spider-man-3-sells-good-on-dvd-and-blu-ray/4903

The numbers for the first week are in. Spider-man 3 did good but falls short of Transformers both in HD and on DVD.

"Spider-man 3" becomes the best selling Blu-ray title with 130,000 copies sold in the first six days. "Transformers" did 190,000 units on HD DVD in the same timeframe. Some have speculated that the "Transformers" numbers are exaggerated but proof has not been presented and Paramount says that they have double checked the numbers.

On DVD Sony was more reluctant to reveal specific numbers but said that the standard DVD version sold 4 - 5 million copies. "Transformers" did 8.3 million on DVD.

beavisofcod2

Any way you slice it, Sony is the PRIMARY backer of Blu-Ray Disc. Their players account for some 95% of all BRD players in the market.

FACT.

So you have to start firmly grounded in that reality to understand the significance of these continuing events.

...and you can bet your sweet *** members of the BDA are stepping back and looking at these sales figures (again, see Spiderman 3 vs. Transformers software sales in the first week) and thinking about their positions.

I'd love to be a fly on teh wall in some of these high-level meetings.

No, they picked HD DVD because Toshiba was more willing to work with Microsoft, implement their technology into the format and go from there. Sony has been trying to figure out ways to submarine the PC for years...so it's furthermore no surprise that they're not partnering. Lastly, let's not forget that they are competing for control of the home theater. There is a money bin of vast proportions awaiting anyone who can pull away from their competitors.

Thing is most numbers include PS3. It is best to include only stand alone players because not every PS3 was bought for BR or even used for BR. I know PS3 users hate doing that because it hurts their argument.rybe1025

a straight-up stand-alone comparison puts BRD shamefully behind HD DVD. They have to inclue the PS3 in order to make BRD legit at this point. Not because it's not a good format, but because it's players aren't selling super well.

For those that care, Transformers did outsell Spiderman 3 launch week:

[QUOTE=""] The numbers for the first week are in.

"Transformers" did 8.3 million on DVD.Dreams-Visions

Do you have a point in there somewhere? Or is your cunning plan to cling to proofless speculation in the face of Paramount's double-checking the numbers?

Throw me a bone.
