Technically, if you think about it, the are quite similar. In piracy, someone usually buys the original which the pirated copies are made for. The main difference is that from one original thousands of pirated copies can be made, but 1 used game can only be with one person at any time. :P But I agree with what you are saying :PII_Seraphim_II
But when one person buys it then they resell it to GameStop or rent it. The store is making their own money from the games. In piracy no stores make money. That's bad because why would they keep selling as much games as they do now if no one is going to rent or rebuy.
whats going on , you want to know whats going on ,
SONY IS TAKING ANOTHER FEATURE AWAY frOm Us EArLY adapters ,,
im sick of sony, and their tricks to try and out sell nintendo and others,
they make move a wii mote/plus mockup and cows defended them now i think they take it to far ,by removing install other os ,or me not getting on line ,
good job sony , ha why xbox live is so much flexible ,
ill gladly pay 50 a yr to keep my features thank you very much
Get over it. Linux ran like crap on the Ps3. People just love to cry about useless issues. Get a Pc and run linux, if your that desperate
Used it once and Linux OS runs terrible on the PS3, much better and more streamlined on the PC.
I see no reason to use it. I only play games, go online, and watch blu rays.
I mean you cant really blame Sony here, blame hackers who are trying to pirate. Sony is losing money on the PS3, and why would they let their system get hacked and basically put them out of business.
MS and Nintendo will go extreme measures to prevent their systems being hacked too. In fact they are getting peeved by hackers.
Wanna blame Ubi for DRM? No blame the pirates.
If no one was trying to hack the PS3, Sony would keep Linux running.
Sony has features like Linux and Web browsing: " Lol PS3 is supposed to be a GAME console why does it have so many useless features?"
Sony gets rid of Linux: "FU Sony(Even though I probably don't use the feature)!!!
[QUOTE="EVOLV3"]Do you think that Sony put the feature there to begin with only for hackers? :roll:I never used Linux so I have no issue with it. The only people that should really be concerned are the pirates.
RedruM_I
In all my years owning a PS3 I have only known 1 person who used Linux on it, and it was just to try it out. This feature affects a tiny, tiny fraction of people, yet I'm sure SW will swarm with guys who "are selling their PS3s now that you can't use Linux" (while failing to mention that you can't run third-party OS' on anyone else's system either). Should be some lulz. Omg without Linux the PS3 is crap, it's all I bought my PS3 for, I can see it now. :PHahadouken
I don't use Linux on my PS3, and I'm going to keep using my PS3.
But this does make me a hell of a lot less likely to have anything to do with the PS4. Now that I know Sony has no problem advertising a feature in order to help sell consoles, and then removing that feature after people have purchased the console, then the PS3 will be the LAST Sony console I'll ever buy.
When the PS4 comes out and I end up getting screwed in a similar manner, then it'll be no one's fault but my own, since I would have already been fully aware that Sony has no problem doing this ****.
You don't have to install the new firmware, but you won't be able to access the psn. The TOS for the PSN states they can alter it at anytime, meaning if you want access to it, you have to get the new firmware.
If you download the new firmware in spite of this, you have no ground to stand on in court.
Pug-Nasty
all new games require system updates tho and come with the system update on the disc
there is no TOS for buying a game, but with this firmware update people with linux installed would have to stop buying new games altogether
360 launched with the hype of full backward capabilities. This gen of consoles launched hyping full HD...INDUSTRY STANDARD HD is at the very least 720p. To my knowledge some games are not even 720p. This gen 360 launched saying EVERY SINGLE 360 would launch with a wireless controller...They didnt. So what about no OS on PS3...Who cares? How may PS3s have sold?...Millions????...How many peole give a crap about Lynics? a couple thousand?. Move on, get over it OR move to something eles.
Let me know when you get a class action lawsuit going... I take some of that $.
"Only does downgrading"
its an aprils fools joke just look at gamespot's title "Sony shutdowns Other OS on April 1st", or something like that so it must be a joke otherwise idc ifb this feature gets removed the linux is slow as hell on a ps3 anyways.LenGen
Dude, you might be right! lol.
I know. Unfortunately none of these users posting on System Wars own computers, too. :( I would love to see the statistics on this. I would also love to know how many people didn't even know there was Linux support on the PS3 until today.Yep, Sony baited me to buy their console so I can use Linux on it with unbearably slow performance. Because Linux couldn't possibly run on anything else.

[QUOTE="Hahadouken"]LOL @ all the desperate Sony haters piling on and either claiming it's affecting tons of people, or claiming to have a PS3 and personally be affected. Nobody used this feature. Get over it.AnjunaddictIts actually funnier seeing cows downplay this so much. I remember back at the PS3s launch hearing people brag about the fact you could install another OS on the system. It was definitely seen as a good feature back then, yet now that its being removed, its nothing that nobody used?Riiiight
You forgeting that cows is not one cow
Ehhh...
People put youyr self in place of SCE, you got hacker that hacked your system "for Homebrew" that makes most profits from software and you failed to patch it, but as quite experienced console producer you know Homebrew always ultimetly end up with piracy, hack is made by not much used feature that not even 5% of users use it, now you have a choose:
1.Let broken feature be and and pay a same consequnces of "homebrew" as with PSP
2.You throw out feature that is broken and not much of people use
If you good bussines guy, you would always pick 2
It make me wonder that some people on SW, place where most popular topic is sales and profit of console producers don't understand that Sony/MS/Nintendo do hardware for money, not for cheirity

it's one thing to say "we're going to bring full backwards compatibility to the xbox 360" and to under-deliver
it's another to charge people for a feature then later rescind their access to it

How did they charge for this feature? You can use your PS3 for skeet shooting, it doesn't mean you paid for that feature. :lol:Well if im honest I think Sony allowing it at all was stupid, piracy was inevitable. Rather than boast the ability to install linux and then remove it, they shouldn't have bothered including it in the first place. But then thats Sony for you, they don't seem to plan ahead too well .... well not this gen anyway.Ehhh...

Maybe they tried by adding other OS support to prevent homebrew maniacs to try to hack the system. If PS3 had that hole from begining, they why for in 3 years they didn't even try to find it? Exacly
Can't the people complaining just use Linux on the computer they are on currently? What's the big deal?FIipMode
Well, theres media center fanatics

skeet shooting isn't an advertised feature of a PS3
besides, what's the difference between this and say if Sony locked users from being able to playback downloaded music and videos, and that the only stuff you could playback was stuff bought from their store? would it be alright then too?

Here's the thing...for the small percentage of people that Sony IS screwing over, do you think those paying customers are getting their PS3's refunded, along with a refund for the games that they can no longer play? Suppose I am one of the small percentage of people with a legitimate complaint. Do I get to return all of the **** that I bought for a full refund?
No. Those people simply end up getting ****ed, and we're supposed to look the other way because it is only a few people who are getting ****ed.
Well I'm sorry, but it doesn't work like that. Because while this issue may not personally affect me in any way, this DOES show that Sony has no problem ****ing over consumers as long as not too many consumers are affected. When the PS4 inevitably comes out with its advertised list of features, to what extent will I be able to trust that some of those features won't be taken away a short time later? If I happen to be in the minority when it comes to caring about a certain feature, what reason do I have to believe that Sony will try to do right by me if it is ever necesary to remove that feature?
See...here's the thing. Piracy has been a big issue on several consoles. If I recall, it was easy as hell to modify the original Playstation (not that I did it), and I'm sure that the original Playstation must have been profittable. There will always be pirates. Companies need to take measures to combat piracy, sure. But NOT to the extent of screwing over paying customers who use the product legally. Bite the bullet and then address this in the PS4, and I'll still be a potential customer. But when their answer to piracy is to disable the features of honest and law-abiding customers who very well may not have purchased that console if it wasn't for that feature, then they've lost future business.
Hey, some people are GENUINELY being affected by this, but it's not their fault that Sony built that feature into the console and then used that feature to help sell consoles. Sony either needs to fix this while allowing the feature to remain, or bite the bullet and take the losses that may result from their consoles being hacked. Disabling a console that people paid good money for should NOT be an option. Because why would any customer have reason to suspect that Sony won't do something similar at a later date, except with a feature that more people care about?
Either stand by the product and continue to offer the features that were promised, or don't promise those features to begin with. Do NOT cripple a console that I paid good money for.
