"Nintendo holds a very special place in the hearts of millions (if not billions) of gamers around the world, and for good reason. Not only are the almost singlehandedly responsible for gaming's place in pop culture today, but their many mascots and franchises are beloved the world over, from Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Pokémon, Metroid, Kirby, and many more. There appears to have been a paradigm shift in recent years, however. As years go by, Nintendo seems to care less and less about the fanbase that brought them where they were today. Between their lack of new IP's for the Wii, or their blatant refusal to bring highly demanded titles to North America, it is clear that Nintendo has seen better days. However, there is a company that is actively trying to take Nintendo's place: Sony."

link

there not wrong, Nintendo has really been going down hill since the Wii. now with the announcment of the WiiU I'm convinced they could care less about their actual fanbase and really only want the casuals. theres only one problem, MS has captured them with Kinect. Sony will have the actual games people care about and create new IP's like Nintendo once did

the only thing left in them is the nostalgia created by their old IP's created long ago, which really have run out of steam but with games that old people will always go back to them no matter how bad they are

Oh here they come....

Nintendo is trying to appeal to the hardcore by sticking with old franchises and the casuals by making simplistic games. They need to find a balance, and quick. Sony is doing both, so I do agree.

I agree that Nintendo lately has been screwing their old fan base more and more, but Sony themselves have a long way to go before they can truely have a special place in my heart, and I've owned all three consoles of theirs. Although I do love Naughty Dog and have bought every game from them except for that Jak Racing game.

How is Nintendo only appealing to the casuals with the Wii U? From what they have shown me, they are planning on pleasing everyone. They are bringing back the classic IP's that Nintendo fans know and love along with gaining 3rd party support. Seems to me like the Wii U is going to gather a mix of Hardcore and Casual gamers. Whatever those terms even mean.

Nintendo isn't making new IPs. We all know Nintendo can make great games but they are too scared to make new IPs and that is a shame. :(

well for one they named it similar to the Wii because they knew if they named it something like the NES it would not get as many sales from name recognition and the WiiU is basically a simple upgrade to get multiplats to run on it, nothing more

They've made it clear that they're trying to please everyone with the Wii U. It may not sell as well as the Wii, but they've got good intentions. They do make new IPs every gen, it's just that this gen they were aimed at drawing in new gamers. I do agree about the issue of not making games available to everyone which really should be though.

Yes the "Wii" part of the name is a selling point. Its that way for all the consoles. If Sony changed the name from PlayStation to something else it would probably hurt sale. Same with Micrsoft and the XBox.

The Wii U isnt really a "Simple" upgrade. Its a whole new console that uses a tablet as a controller. That is way more than a "simple" upgrade.

Article makes a lot of sense. One could argue that many of Sony's decisions haven't been smart (financially,) but as far as looking at them strictly from a gamer's point of view, Sony truly is the next Nintendo.

But what if Sony is the next Sega? :P

Honestly, there is not really a way Sony can substitute Nintendo. If they try to do that they're destined to fail. Sony is about high-profile cinematic experiences like Uncharted and God of War, not about Mario and Zelda clones. Many companies attempted that but failed.

Besides, does Sony have the "Nintendo magic" ? I think they don't :)

Finally... Someone who understands.

Nintendo realized with the Wii they pushed their old fanbase away. With the Wii U and the 3DS they are trying to fix this. They are apealing to both "types" of gamers now.

Coolyfett agrees with you all too. Nintendo is just not for Coolyfett. Its like the fisher price of gaming. They made Mike Tysons Punch Out one of the best games ever, the Wii game was ok, but it should have featured a star. Money Mayweather would have been perfect being he is banned from Fight Night games. Nintendo doesnt try to trump other companies instead they try to create their own lane with things most gamers do NOT want. Too many tricks, gimmicks & so called innovation. Yea there have never been motion gaming but that doesnt mean they should do, yes there has never been 3D on a hand held but again they should not make stuff like that. Instead of making a faster car, Nintendo would rather put a plumbing system in the car. Instead of making a car with better fuel economy Nintendo would rather make a car that runs on banana peels, thinking they just made something amazing when we are looking at Nintendo like WTF??

I don't think so. Sony will never ever have something legendary that was Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, Game Boy, etc. Especially with modernity, they can never replicate the contributions and legacy Nintendo has made in the video game industry and its history.

Also, I can't find anything magical about Sony. It may just be me but except Team ICO, i can't find any game of theirs that has soul and magic like i see in Nintendo's games. Having played GoW from my PSP, i realized how soulless that game was with shallow emphasis on blood, gore, and violence. Not to mention the story doesn't evoke any emotions at all. Mario doesn't even have a story but it evokes emotions from me especially in the ending. This is coming from a PC gamer whose very first console is the Wii.

They have a lot of 3rd party support lined up. That will most likely give gamers a lot of the games they want. Not only will games be released for PS3,360 and PC but now the Wii U. Nintendo WILL have that 3rd party support that they didnt with the Wii.

Plus, the Nintendo IP's that we are bound to get. A new Zelda, Mario. They announced Super Smash Bros. and Pikmin 3.

So multiplats that will doubtfully look/preform better on the system are "Hardcore support" Sorry but I'm looking for the Nintendo of old who published tons of fresh new games that could only be aquired on a Nintendo system. Where is Pikmen 3? Where are all the big IP's that Nintendo is just sitting on for no good reason other than they don't think they are worth investing in when Wii _____ titles are where they are pouring cash.

For the long term Sony is doing everything right.

- Pushing Bluray hurt their console business big time, but they won the format war, BD is gaining traction and they will make a killing on it for decades.

- Pushing new IP's by the sixpack. Sure it won't sell many millions in the beginning, until it takes root in hearts and minds, these are going to be the Marios and Zeldas of the next 20-30 years.

- Pushing Move, but not pushing very hard. There will always be a subset of the gaming population that wants and likes motion gaming, and Move is for them. Us "hardcore" guys will never use motion gaming.

For the long term MS is doing everything wrong.

- Still stuck with DVD as games get bigger, 2 disks, now 3 disks, next year 5 disks.

- Hardware has a reputation as a piece of junk, even the slim which they tout as "RROD proof" only because now it has a red light instead of a red ring, the hardware itself is still a low quality piece of schit. My 7 month old slim sounds like a helicopter. Go look on Amazon at 1-star ratings from people whose 360 died. MS still has a problem, only now their warrenty is 1 year and not 3.

- Still ripping people off for peer-to-peer gaming. Way to build up badwill. More than HALF of all Xbox 360 users do not have Gold membership, do you think they are happy?

- Halo, Gears, Halo, Gears, Halo, Gears. Keep milking them until Fenix turns 90. Nothing fresh came out except Alan Wake for the last 5 years.

- Kinect. 10 million people bought it, 0 people use it for daily gaming. Fail. It's like the exercise bike everybody has in their basement. The sad part? They're still pushing it hard and building ther whole future around it. Double fail.

Its not there strong suit and Infamous and GoW are direct titles that are trying to appeal to western tastes and not just that but the tastes of stereotypical 16-30 year old males with lots of disposable income. Nothing wrong with that age group but Sony's diversity was better in the PS1 days and even the PS2 days. These days unless they say "Jak 4 in the same style as Jak and Daxter" or "Ape Escape" I already know I'm not the target. I'm not the target of GoW, or Infamous, or Resistance, or Killzone, or Uncharted, or War/Starhawk, or Uncharted. Those are great games but they aren't titles that are going to bring them old school Nintendo fame. New school Nintendo is still closer to old school Nintendo then Sony Computer Entertainment will ever be. And I like Sony titles. (how much is another story though)

Yeah probably because they can't make a mascot that can rival Mario like SEGA did with Sonic. It's pretty hard now to develop a game that is truly groundbreaking. Not to mention platformers aren't popular like they used to.

All third party devs made on the wii were either low budget, small, or niche games. There was never a "blockbuster" game on the wii nor a "mainstream" game. That's why Wii never got proper versions of RE and Dead Space. Instead, Wii got on-rails shooters.

Coolyfett says not having GTA 4, Red Dead & L A Noir was really really bad. Nintendo should have cut RockStar a check to make an exclusive. Not sure how the Chinatown Wars situation came about, but that game was REALLY GOOD, and it did not sell. Great 3rd Party games and Nintendo just dont go together anymore. Nintendo really needs to dig deeper for the hard core market. Zelda HD is a great start, but man Nintendo had games like Contra, Mike Tysons Punch Out, Tecmo Bowl, Double Dribble, Castlevania, Mario 3...man they gotta get back to that awesomeness they needs to COMPETE instead of Innovating(making gimmicks)

Well, Batman and Darksiders were confirmed for Wii U which will appeal to some people and since EA is on board there will be a ton of big 3rd party titles. methinks

lordlors

The Wii Batman game was actually pretty cool. The one based on the cartoon. EA supported the Wii, the Wii owners just didnt buy games.

All third party devs made on the wii were either low budget, small, or niche games. There was never a "blockbuster" game on the wii nor a "mainstream" game. That's why Wii never got proper versions of RE and Dead Space. Instead, Wii got on-rails shooters.

Right On, but wasnt the Wii even with the PS2?? Why did Nintendo allow all that crap to come to their system? Its like they just let the 3rd party firms shove garbage their way.

However, there is a company that is actively trying to take Nintendo's place: Sony."

there not wrong, Nintendo has really been going down hill since the Wii. now with the announcment of the WiiU I'm convinced they could care less about their actual fanbase and really only want the casuals. theres only one problem, MS has captured them with Kinect. Sony will have the actual games people care about and create new IP's like Nintendo once did

the only thing left in them is the nostalgia created by their old IP's created long ago, which really have run out of steam but with games that old people will always go back to them no matter how bad they are

how the hell is nintendo going downhill. if anything sony has flop big this with ps3 most of its fans went with 360 and wii this gen

I'm not buying second thought licensed spin offs for full price "just because". I hope you don't do that.

Not sure what you mean by this man, what Coolyfett was saying is all thee EA games that came to the wii were also on the PS3 & 360, but Wii owners did not buy the games like the PS3 & 360 players did. From Madden to FIFA to Need for Speed to NBA Live. Was the Wii less powerful than say the PS2 & xbox 1?

Nintendo will have worse reputation with the third party devs if they do that. Besides, who cares about the crappy games? You do? I sure as hell don't. They don't matter to me. The Wii has a lot of great games. That's what truly matters.

[QUOTE="TrapJak"]So LBP, Modnation Racers, GT5, Infamous, God of War, Sly more dont exist?

Kashiwaba

You stole it out of my mouth exactly what I was thinking :P.

Now people will only have to read one long winded post and since I get a lot of crap for being "bias" against Sony (I just want Crash and Spyro back :( ) only one of us has to be the bad guy :P

Anyway, this thread is a little different, Sony prob has the moe rounded 3rd party as of now but I liked them more when they didn't tbh. Their more rounded 3rd party games just aren't targeted towards me.

It seems Nintendo can only create new games of the beloved popular franchises with new hardware. Not good for us.

NBA, Need For Speed and Madden all sucked on the Wii. Me personally, if I dislike almost all EA games as it is, why would I want to buy their dumbed down, low effort Wii versions?

SONY wont be as good as NINTENDO till they stop tryong to appeal to the western market with their FPS and TPS games they need to focus on more genres and start making games that appeals to more people.

As much as I agree with the first part of your post, you do know that the new school of Nintendo consists of trying to gain casuals with the Wiimote. Of all the Wii games, only 1(I count the series as 1) game , SMG, has been deemed in the Hall of Fame. The Wii has been focused on kiddy games and no new IPs. The DS was a great system, but once again, it consisted of Mario and Zelda. Miyamoto produced great work, but wheres the originality now? No new franchises, no new universes, its the same Nintendo, and thats not always a good thing.

I mean, Sony is nowhere near Nintendo in "magic " yet. But with its variety in genres:

Platformers:LBP

Action/Adventure:God of War

TPS:Uncharted

Racing:Gran Turismo

Unique:Flower

Stealth:MGS

It could be in "years".

I also notice that you said games now are appealing to the Western Market. Though that may be true, have you notice Japan taking an interest in these types of games as well? Japan loves LBP and Uncharted, and they also can't wait for more. The US isnt the only country who loves bBooming and Shooming everything :D.

Besides, if you never played Nintendo games before, wouldn't the thought of an Italian Plumber stopping a giant turtle/dinosaur wierd? Or a elven fairy boy killing a black giant pig?

The Wii owners who would be interested in games like Madden, FIFA, Need for Speed and NBA Live would probably also own a 360/PS3 where they could buy a superior version.

The Wii didnt really have any big budget 3rd party games that it didnt share with the more advanced consoles.

Sony > Nintendo by a mile, My first console was an NES, I grew up on Nintendo but get off the nostalgia pill. Sony has been doing way more for core gaming the last 15 or so years. Nintedo had my frist gaming years, but as soon as I played MGS1 on the PS1 Sony took over.

I have been playing on Nintendo consoles since Nes and, honestly, they have yet to disappoint. Sony, on the other hand, dropped the ball after 2 gens.

I don't want 15 Uncharted games, I'd rather they keep getting new IP's every generation.
