Sorry if old, just passing along some news.

"Servers and the like have running costs... after we sell the hardware, though, we continue to sell products such as content and services. We expect to see considerable growth in digital content, such as game download services, avatar items and the like. We can also accept payment in a growing number of ways."

"In addition to single-payment packaged software, there are also schemes like monthly fees or per-item charges. I think this variety of payment methods will bring about a diverse range of playing methods, too."

It would have to be something incredible for most people to buy it. The only thing most people care about is playing online for free.

PSN might become payable from the get-go in the next-gen, though...

the remarks are pretty general... could mean anything

Well if they start charging, you can thank M$ for proving to Sony that people will pay for nothing.

Proboly charge only for certain things. Like how they do with quore. I doubt they would put a fee on psn.

Nor really. Just because online is free, doesn't make it better. And nothing comes free. Not even the so-called "Free Online" for PC, Wii, & PS3. Do you really think that Nintendo & Sony gives you free online out of the goodness of their hearts? They got to pay for things in order to keep online for free. It's just like going into any shop or restaurant where it says "Free Wi-Fi" or "Free Internet" when you have a laptop. It's like going into your local library & using the internet for free, but guess what? It's the cities & companies that helps pay for online to keep it free. That money also comes out of their own pockets in order to have free online. There are also things that have to be sacrificed in order to keep online for free. I also feel that MS has plenty of things which goes far beyond ordinary online, which is why it comes with costs for those features.

One day, both of those companies will charge you for those features as well & just to play for online, & then what are you going to say?

from what it sounds like Sony is only going to start charging for new features. What those features will be could be anything. I'm kinda hoping for content subscriptions though. If psn charged $5 a month and offered a free psn game to try each week, or had some sony movies available I'd be in.

This is the first I've heard of psn avatars though... could it be they'll be copying ms (who copied the mii)?

No, they pretty much showed how you can milk your consumer dry and get away with it. Of course others will follow suit. Thank you Microsoft, you really have shown the console video game industry how to be better... for yourselves.

Strange...when I switched to the PS3 I noticed no difference in terms of gaming except for the fact that the PS3 doesnt have cross game voice chat, but it does have dedicated servers for its major titles.

If anything I would prefer to pay for PS3's service because they actually do something.

I'm guessing since they mentioned it they're thinking about it already so it is just a matter of time. They are introducing two tiers of PSN, one Premium one is not but you are able to play online for free this gen still. Next gen I'm not so sure about.

When you go into a restaurant the charges for the services are already included in the price of the products you consume. What MS started is that you can charge consumers for just sitting on the table and, on top of that, charge them for the products.

I'm going to say it all started with Microsoft, because it did. Locking away the entire multiplayer section of a game for a 50$ is a cheap business move

Do we need to go through the features between XBL and PSN? In the beginning, yes, PSN was pretty bad compared to XBL. Now, you have small difference between the 2. The major difference between them is cross voice chat vs no cross game chat. Is that worth $50 to you?

Well we are not talking about hardware ;)

In my opinion, think they are both equal because of the free service, and there are many DLCs at the PS store that are free, but I totally agree that XBL has a little more features. PS3 owners have to wait for XGC :P

But little do you know the "cows" saved $150 over the course of 3 years as opposed to "lemmings".

who gives a crap about that? People want FREE online play ,you are basically forced to pay extra for every online game. How about free online and pay for extra service that people actually care for themselves?

lol....it's not milking if it's a valuable service that's worth paying for

Do we need to go through the features between XBL and PSN? In the beginning, yes, PSN was pretty bad compared to XBL. Now, you have small difference between the 2. The major difference between them is cross voice chat vs no cross game chat. Is that worth $50 to you?

XBL offers more than just gaming services.....can u grab a group of buddies and watch a movie 2gether over PSN? Just an example of many

I'm aware of the services and features that XBL offers and they are not worth it, especially compared to a free service like PSN. PSN has been getting just about every feature that XBL has, so it will only be a matter of time until it has that too, for free.

If you like paying $50 for it, than go all out on it. But when I pay $60 for a game and then have to pay an additional $50 just to play the MP portion of that games (as well as others) I'm going to be a little mad.

I hope they do just to laugh at all the cows

chikenfriedrice

But little do you know the "cows" saved $150 over the course of 3 years as opposed to "lemmings".

true...$150 that was used to buy Bluray movies :P

Why's that a bad thing? You JUST mentioned one of the capabilities of live being able to watch MOVIES together, hypocrit much?

Ok, will do, thanks for the suggestion.

I don't even know what's so great about that feature, seriously, you can just watch it seperately and just discuss it later. NOT A BIG DEAL or something that would make anyone go out and purchase a console for.
