The man behind Sony's PlayStation Move controller has claimed that the peripheral feels better for RTS games than the humble mouse and keyboard.

Dr. Richard Marks told CVG that the wand-like device will impact the design of RTS games in future - bringing them into the 3D plane.

"I think that PC RTS games are designed right now for the mouse and keyboard, but I think the Move can work with the more general idea of an RTS really well," he said.

"It could play a PC RTS really well, but I think there is modifications on the RTS genre that will be really good with. I play a lot of RTS games but the way I think about it is you have a landscape below you with all the troops, and imagine you're the general and you just want to look out over your troops and select guys - tell them to attack there.

"You really feel like this general or god-like person that can manipulate huge armies.

"I think that with Move would feel way better than a mouse for that, for example, and doing things that require some 3D information is much better with Move. The RTS genre has been designed not to require any 3D information, but having that extra dimension and all the angle data that we have too is also very interesting."

Very bold words! Wonder if it'll pay off!

No way in hell that would be better than a kb+m for RTS games.

Maybe the mouse, and I stress maybe. How on Earth will it beat out the keyboard though?

Really? Its not like the man behind the "gimmick" controller would say it is worse.

Well the ps3 does support KB so if MOVE + KB for an RTS would be better than KB+mouse. BUT heck what do I know, I dont game on PC's and I've never played an RTS

Sure, having to stabilize my pointer in mid air is going to be more accurate than my mouse along with the truckload of buttons, that my keyboard provides me with.

That could be good. Would allow you to just pop the keyboard on your knee and not worry about finding a flat surface for a mouse.

you guys are feeding the troll, i'm disappointed, anyway it probably will for some people and it probably won't and no one has had a chance to use it with a rts soo ehh, maybe, maybe not

Chris_Williams

Exactley what troll are you referring to? I see no trolling statements. All the TC is doing is relaying the information.

-.- If Sony is saying Move > Mouse and keyboard and Move is essentially a carbon copy of the Wiimote and Nunchuck, that would mean Wii > Mouse and keyboard....

Logical fail?

Maybe it easier for the consumer but once you master the k/m combo its the best for nearly every type of game.

They gave one example of a moment where they prefered Move over PC/mouse.

And of course OP ran with it.

He basically says it'll work better with modifications... think of just about any RTS you mostly point and click and with move it'll be faster so theoretically yes it could work but logically no because it will require a whole new change to the genre and even then that would require an Exclusive RTS to fully integrate the Move with the game.

when it comes to the Mouse, maybe. But it can never replace a kb, just have a look at pro SC gamers, they use the kb more than the mouse xD I could imagine that some kind of combination of touch screen and kb could work wonders

TC is being really deceiving here. At first when I read thread title my reaction was just uhhh not again. But that article he posted doesn't contain that phrase at all. Sony is suggesting that the MOVE could match the mouse's precision in unit selection, not that its outright better than kb/m, which if they said that I would cringe.

^This

I read the article and "Sony" doesn't say that ... Richard Marks simply states that he can see where Move could either match or improve certain aspects of RTS games.

mouse, maybe. but an arm/wrist isn't going to replicate the dedicated hand in preciseness from what I see.

and no subcontroller will allow you the functionality of a keyboard.

I find this hard to believe. sure it might be great for a game like Homeworld, but for games like Starcraft umm... Yeah I don't even think I need to continue from here,

Still, if it *really* is better than the only thing I can be is excited that a genre is evolving and that controls are evolving and that eventually such things will be used in many PCs.
